well I took the little tool to see if my pc was ok and it says I need more ram :dozey:

would upgradeing do anything for me??

plz dont flame be helpful

edit: oh and I almost forgot.. WILL MY TOASTER RUN HL2?!?!?!?!?!!

I don't see how it would be helpful. It just sounds like some advice you would get at the Best Buy store:

"Your RAM should be half the amount of your MHZ"

I was like "LOL WTF???" Seriously thats exactly what the salesperson told me at the Best Buy store.

lmao what a dickshit

hmm but this one uk site with a will me pc run hl2 tool thing told me a need more.. I wonder why

maybe they are trying to dupe you into wasting some money

The Best Buy guy probably knows jack about computers. If I got 1.6 Gigs of RAM, my Box would melt.

If you only have 512 megabytes of ram and your running Windows XP, then getting more ram will definitely help. I have seen performance jumps in games that have much lower requirements than Half-life 2 by upping past 512. Depending on which motherboard setup you have, you may just want to add another stick (rather than swapping out what you have with better ones).

Give me some more info on your computer if you can.

512DDR here and I haven't had any problems with it... cept in Battlefield but that doesn't count.

hmm...ok...I have a 2.1ghz proccessor...
that means I need, 1050 megs of RAM...LOL thats nod bad, by those standards, I could get a 6ghz processor!
(No, I don't have three gigs of ram, though my MOBO can support 3gigs, in the form of three 1gig sticks)
I don't even have a gig of ram.

I just upgraded 768 megs of RAM, from 512, and lets just say that for games, the ONLY improvment was a load speed increase, only shanved a few seconds off in UT2k3, but for graphics editing, etc...thats where I like it.

For HL2, 512 is PLENTY.

Weird, I did that same thing with 512 and they said it would be fine

Well, for some games it might not make a difference whether you have more or not. But other games, generally the ones which have alot of AI characters/units, it does make a difference. I have, in the same day, switched from 640 to 512 and seen a performance loss (although only when pushing it, which is the way its meant to be played :D )

I have no idea what Half-life 2 is like, and how memory intensive it will be, and neither do you. However, seeing as HL2 supposedly runs "well" on a 700mhz, you may very well be right (and great if you are).

Alb1221: Your 2.4 ghz w/ Radeon 9700 is very capable of running HL2 at the higher level of graphics. Whether or not you want to spend the money on RD ram is up to you. If your short on cash, then just wait till HL2 comes out and see if it runs well and then decide from there.

I think for HL2 your P4 2.4, 9700, and 512 ram will be fine, and you should be able to play at high detail levels, probably at least 90% of stuff turned on

I would buy two more sticks of 256rd wich would up me to 1024rd ram

my mobo currently has two sticks of memory with metal on them and two that are just full of circuits I assume those are just circuit completers... anyone know??!?!

Remember, buy RD ram in Pairs (Thats the only way it works)

So if you want 512 of RD 1066, get two sticks of 256.

The "metal on them" i take it is a solid chunk clipped on over the whole thing? That would be a heatsink. VERY useful for, you know, not having your computer melt. The other two "just full of circuits" are... well... Heh... I'm wayyyyyyy too tired to go about explaining the construction techniques of computers and their parts ^^; Suffice to say, you're fine, there's probably no REAL difference to any of the ram sticks.

Though I'm curious as to why you have four 128 sticks, instead of one 512 or two 256.

dude I have two 256 modules I think!, two have heatsinks and well memmory on em and the other two are circuit completers

I know dell makes there mobos so you cant get monitor connectivity without all the ram decks full.. pretty stupid

btw the two without the metal are flat... there just like a green thing with circuits on it.. flat..circuits

they are called rambus memories
and must sit in pairs

the green flat modules are dummies,

MUAHAHA
Im fine for HL2
P4 3.06Ghz
3D Prophet Raedon 9700 pro
512RD pc 800
Audigy 2
and a crap load of fans lol!!!

question, whats the dif between RD, DDR, SD and all the others, i know a little about them, but not much.

BrING On HL2!!! :D

Alb ever heard of the edit button?

And Gordon RD>DDR>SD thats all i know.

No. RD>DDR>SDR

If you forgot the R in SDR, it's the most GRMBLFCKNGAAAH!!! nasty typo. Let me explain: DDR and SDR are both types of SDRAM (synchronous dynamic random access memory). DDR means Double Data Rate, and SDR means Single Data Rate. There is no such thing as DDRAM, though many small computer shops list DDR SDRAM as DDRAM in their pricelist. Which is very very wrong. RD is the layman name for RDRAM which stands for Rambus Dynamic Random Access Memory. So that is alltogether a different system dan SDRAM, using a different bus (or slot if you want to call it that). Hope i've cleared this mistake up for you :) Good day.

This isnt a bragging/my comp is the shit thread

i currently have samsung pc600 pair of 256 sticks of rdram...

i want to add another 512 pc600 rdram.. my question is im low on money and i need rdram.. should i go for 512 pc600 rdram by synchmax? its 94 bucks of pricewatch.com.. thx will i see a improvement in my pc?

yes, ofr the thrid time in the third thread, that will be perfectly fine.

the metal on those two are called heatspreaders.

a heatsink for memory.

ok but my question is are the flat ones (they clearly have no typical black blocks on mem on em) simply just to fill those slots!!! b/c without em dells cant complete monitor circuit

so in other words would I remove the flat ones and put in the new ones if i upgraded

assumeing the ones with heatsink's are 2 sticks of 256 and the other ones are just completers

after some1's explanation of teh ram types ill just add that RDRAM is Intel only ram so if you have AMD dont buy RDRAM... ya cant have it :p

Remove the two flat sticks and put your new ones in their place, Its as simple as that. They are only needed if you dont have two other sticks of rambus to fill in the slot. Since when did dell's make PC's with rambus?

The only game Id see you getting more performance in is 1942, which uses around 400 megs of ram or more for the large maps.
