My current system is an AMD Athlon 2500xp+ with 512mb DDR and a 9600xt video card. I'm looking at upgrading before Doom 3 hits the shelves (August 13th in New Zealand), and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions?

I think my CPU will be fine for Doom 3, but my RAM and video card could be a worry. I am buying another 512mb of RAM, and I dont know which video card to buy.

I'm looking at either a 9800pro or 5900 XT, they seem to be in about the same price range. What do you guys think would be better for Doom 3 and other next generation games?

Also, are there specific brands to look out for? I cant afford to buy a card from one of the really expensive brands, I'm looking at Powercolor or Gexcube (really stretching for Gexcube) for the 9800 pro or Gigabyte, Albatron or Leadtech for the 5900 xt.

Also, which card is a better overclocker?

Cheers!

9800 Pro for sure. The GeForce FX cards aren't exactly great. Granted, D3 is OpenGL and designed for nVidia cards, I still think you'd be best with a 9800 Pro. Especially if you're keeping HL2 in mind as well.

Regarding OC, it depends. Varies from model to model, make to make, and system to system.

Yep a 9800Pro over a 5900 anyday. The image quality of the FX series is very questionable. Besides even though Nvidia are mainly with D3, the 9800pro would run D3 heaps better than a 5900 would run HL2.
