I am running Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Build 3790 and I downloaded Half Life 2 via Steam. It runs well and it's a fun game like it has always been, but occasionaly it's had a few problems. Most noticibly has been that the HUD doen't always work properly. But more interesting is the effect it's had on the civilian npc's. (See attachments) This also happens when playing Deathmatch. If you have an idea on how to fix it, that'd be great. If not, no big deal. I just thought it was worth sharing.

What is a DLL?

its a file that stores information about how to acess files and stuff. I think it also is registry files, and some other stuff. They are important files and if they dont work strange stuff happens. alot of times real errors would come up saying missing or corrupt dll so i dont think that is the prob. but yea, contact valve

cool thanks. i sent my question in, any ideas on how long a reply takes? or will they release a video of themselves answering me but then have to push the actual answer back a year? Haha...I swear that's funny at 12:45 AM....

The above info about DLL is not true.
DLL = Dynamic Linked Library. A DLL file stores functions that are dynamically linked to a program when needed. In the old days of programming, functions are statically linked to a program, meaning the codes of the functions are added to the executable file (.exe file) of a program during linking. So if several programs use the same function, they all have the same copy of the function's code in their executable files. This is a waste of memory space. Dynamically linked functions are stored in DLL file, seperate from the executable files. They are linked to a program during runtime (not linking) when needed. And they only have at most one copy of their codes in the memory at any time.
Technically speaking, Windows itself is just a big collection of DLL files, containing thousands of system functions that are called Windows API. These APIs are functions that a user program uses to do Operating System level tasks, like window creation, memory allocation, I/O operation, graphics rendering, etc.

The best bet would be to validate HL2. The information to how to validate is on the steampowered website. I know people have had problems with missing textures when downloading the game from steam, but validating usually works, hopefully it should fix your wireframe problem too

Its most likely that its because your running the game on XP-64. Even if your using WOW its could still screw it up.

Rs6, there are no known issues with HL2 and XP64

Harmless, all you need to do is type steam://validate/220 and steam://validate/320 into your internet browser address bar and this will replace any missing or corrupt files.

missing sound...

can anyone tell me why I am missing some of the sound in the game, mostly from the videos ie the beardy man on the big screens and Gordons friends whom he talks to over the video feeds.

"

hello. first post I see. I think some guy had the same problem as you.

It would be in the Hardware/Software section of the forum most likely, its probably 1 page back, since its a couple days old, so hit the " > " button at the bottom of the page.

Just look for a title that sounds like your problem.

If you can't find it, start a new thread and be sure to include every bit of pertinent information, so it will be easily answered in 1 or 2 posts.

Welcome!

No one ever listens, but just validate your Steam cache files by typing steam://validate/220 and steam://validate/320 into your internet browser window. It will download any missing files.
