6800GT or X800 Pro

Hi, in 3 weeks (next paycheck) i'll have about $450 to spend on a new gfx card. I want to know if i should get a 6800GT or x800 pro. Looking back at how nvidia performed on HL2 (absolute crap) will a 6800 GT card do well in hl2? Thanks

Right now we don't know if the 6800GT or the X800 Pro will be better for HL2 or not. So far on all the benchmarks for other games the 6800GT has beaten the X800 Pro.

Buy neither, for $450 you could do a lot more for your system....graphics cards cannot improve system performance if your system sucks.

the 6800 series is vastly superior to nvidia's previous efforts as thier shader paths are now much closer to ATI's line of cards... I garuntee you the 6800gt will perform just as well as an X800 pro in HL2 due toi the 4 extra render pipes but im also sure an XT-PE will outpace a 6800u in source. On the otherhand take a look at the doom 3 engine benchmarks on the nvidia cards... the 6800GT even outpaces the XT-PE (!!!) and the lack of a full 16 pipelines on the x800 pro really makes it suffer. Try and remember that there will be a shedload of games over the next few years that will use both the doom 3 engine and hl2 engine so the final choice is up to you...

p.s. i voted 6800GT but i have an XT-PE on the way

6800 will be the better card, in the long-run. It has full support for DirectX 9.0c, and it has 16 pipelines. It is also cheaper than the X800 Pro. Although it will most likely not do better than the ATi cards for HL2, I believe it will do better in other games.

Just based on the Card, I would pick the 6800GT. If you can grab the X800pro for less than the 6800GT then I actually might pick that up unless you think you will be playing D3 a lot. :\

If you get your pay check in 3 weeks I would hold out on making a pre-manture choice with the hope that benchmarks will come out for HL2, like D3, if it goes gold soon enough.

buy the x800 pro i ordered one 419$ allstarshop.com very fast but in my opinion you should upgrade your cpu to p4 3.2 or amd 3200+ if you have the extra cash

Dude, have you ever read any threads about info on hl2? You can run hl2 fine with a 9600 Pro....So what do you think? And you don't need a X800 to run hl2 full detail, the X800 Pro will still probably get about 50-60fps in HL2 easily.

This isn't FarCry sorry, 1gb isn't needed for HL2 just to load levels. FarCry with under 1gb is sooo slow loading, its horrible.

Yeah the lag happened when they used 9800 Pro's... This past year with X800 Pro's didn't lag.

I won't have a problem running full detail @ 1024x768 or 1280x1024 @ 4xaa 8xaf...So there goes your theory!
