whadda think? is it worth it??

FFFFFFUUUUUUUUU---

So that is what my almost-half-a-grand-in-2006 video card is worth now? :(

Got mine for 190 a couple of years ago...

I was lucky?

If only this site was international.

Why do you have two?

Can you have two at once?

Of course, with two of them in SLi you'll never need to turn on your central heating!

GeForce 5, 4LYFE.

How does this card (8800GTX) compare to the inexpensive ATi 4670 and similarly priced GeForce 9800GT and 9800GTX?

8800GTX is much better? Also I noticed that this card is re-certified. That's a fancy way of saying refurbished with warranty?

The main reason I don't have a card is because I'm afraid I'll buy one and it won't be good enough to play the current games well. I want to be able to play GTA4, and basically all games up to that point.

I'm also always afraid I'll buy one, only to have better cards become cheaper right away. Anyone have any information? How does this card compare to the latest cards? Would it be worth it to pay $180 for a better card do you think?

GeForce 5, 4LYFE.

You've got to be joking...right?

The 8800GTX is very similar to the 9800GTX, albeit a little slower. It would crush a 4670 but right now ATI's 4850 is around the same price range and offers better performance in some titles. Personally I would go with the 4850.

Right now you could get the best performance by going with two of these cheap cards and setting them up in a crossfire/SLI configuration.

As for prices going down, it's pretty obvious that computers have a high depreciation rate. It's a double edged sword.

I paid $150 for my 8800GS about a year and a half back. :(

the biggest rip off was when the 512 mb 8800GT came out and it performed almost as good as the GTX which cost twice as much; they completely underminded their own high end product

not a bad deal for what you get. I have a 8800gt and it's nearing it's end of life cycle (for me that is) will upgrade when dx11 cards are the norm

Q, yeah, it was a joke, bro.

I have a bunch of games that I've couldn't play or couldn't play well with my 1900GT. I had to reduce the graphics all the way pretty much, and even then it was choppy. Then the card died.

DiRT (last game I bought)
Modern Warfare [1]
Gears of War
Race 07
Oblivion
Dark Messiah

other games...

So I should be able to run these pretty much high settings with the 8800GTX right? RAM is 1GB generic, CPU is 3.33 CeleronD, OS = XP Pro

Well, the celeron will probably limit you a bit, as will the ram...but the 8800gtx shouldnt get bottlenecked too too bad. Should be able to run the games pretty well.

they should play those games. I'm currently playing Dragon Age on a amd x2 4200, a 8800GT and 1g of ram. the ram is the biggest performance crutch. with 3 gigs of ram I can play pretty much every recent game on the market

Do I need to upgrade the cooling? Common room temperature is generally higher than most people, and in the summer it's very uncomfortably hot. I don't want to kill it.

no. the stock cooler is fine so long as you dont overclock. people complained because the fan was really loud, which it is but only on startup. more ram might be a better upgrade, as your vidcard will be bottlenecked

Maybe I shouldn't be so angry at this and take this as an opportunity to SLI my shit.

Personally I would go with the 4850.

I have a Sapphire 4850HD & I love it more than my wife!

( Of Crap, I hope her brother, Top Secret, does not read this.... )

On a serious note, the last nVidia card I had was the 6800 Ultra & it was a great card that saw me through several years. However, I love my 4850 & so far, it is the best card I have ever had performance to Hardware ratio wise, with my old 9800Pro coming in a close 2nd. It has also NEVER let me down in the 18 months I have had it, though the stock cooling does suck & needs to be cleaned thoroughly monthly of dust bunnies or it'll run hot. Other than that, I highly recommend it.

That price looks nice if you don't mind referb products and either could use a cheap upgrade or go SLI when you already have a 8800 GTX. I remember I picked up a 8800GTS and a couple 8800GT's when those took a price slash for low $100s and sub $100 although they were new and not referbs. The most recent 8800 GTS have very similar performance to the GTX. Lower ROPs and memory but higher clocks and bigger memory bus (512bit vs 384).

Although you can get better performance and use less power with newer cards. So if you pay your own power bill it would be more expensive to get a cheap card that uses extra power than a more expensive card with a newer faster leaner chip. Especially if you are looking at ATI 5000 cards and leave your PC on 24/7 (they have very low idle power).
ATI 5870 @ 19w idle/ 134w avg 3D use.
ATI 5850 @ 19w idle/106w avg 3D.
8800 GTX @ 70w idle/134w avg 3D.

performance 5800's and 8800 GTX

Ditto. I had to get a heatsink for the 800gt because it would be at 65c or so idle and underload or when playing a game it would be in the 85-103c normally. now it idles at around 38-45 since its starting to get cold and underload it maxes at around 48-54c :).

hey guys check here
what about this card??

$59 aint bad at all
There must be some catch at that price...

My 4850 (Golden Sample) has a 700mhz core clock, and that xfx only has 600mhz. The XFX memory interface is DDR2, 128-bit and clocked at 1000MHz, compared to mine which is GDDR3, 256-bit and 2200mhz.

You'll get what you pay for.

I only passed up this offer because I didn't have a chance to put my check in the bank. Now it's sold out, and my old card died yesterday.

Ah, sweet ****ing regret.
