any suggestions? also, if a hsf is socket A, will it fit?

Only CPUs, Motherboards and Heatsinks of the same socket will work together. Only a few heatsinks can work across 2-3 platforms and it would say it's compatible either on the box or online.

Abit AV8 if you like VIA or MSI Neo2 Platinum if you like Nforce. As for the HSF i would go with an XP-90 as its pretty much a cross platform HS. Socket A, 754 and 939 are all supported and its one of the best heatsinks on the market.
