I all,
I pretty much content with my gaming rig.
I'm used to a cheap mouse which I replace every now & then.

I'm tiered of it - it's time for a decent gaming mouse.

I have a pretty big palm & extra buttons are no necessity.
I use my rig for some writing and computing as well.

Anyone have an idea for a quality not so expensive mouse?
should it be Microsoft / Logitech (or else) ?
Does the dpi(400/800/1600) really matters in games such as HL2/STALKER/Far-Cry/etc. ?

So many questions, so little time...

I'd say the Logitech mx518. It's pretty big, pretty cheap, and yet still the best performing gaming mouse out there. The microsoft/razer Habu looks nice too.

DPI means the precision of the mouse. Always use the highest DPI available on the mouse and then set the game mouse speed to comfort. That allows for the smoothest movement, without skipping pixels like with lower DPI (ball mice and cheap optical mice).

I currently use a Microsoft Habu mouse, tis really sleak and sexy bit on the expensive side.

The DPI settings are fun to play about with, just increases reaction/speed of the mouse good for online FPS games.

You could go for a cordless mouse, they are usually bulky :)

Logitech MX518

The higher the DPI, the more accurate it is, and it also makes the mouse cursor move greater distance on screen with less movement of the mouse. The electronics inside the mouse also factor in here, and the MX518 is one of the very best in the world at detection and tracking.

Whatever you do, don't get the Logitech G5. It has accuracy problems; It 'lags' when you make tiny movements with the mouse. For "gaming" my ass.

Meh, I love my G5 gaming mouse. I don't noticed any "lags" and I sure as heck don't have accuracy problems. Maybe I got a newer model or something because on the box it states it comes with two thumb buttons now, instead of one. Now what I really am beginning to need is a new keyboard.

Any one mouse from the Logitech MX series would be great for you.

Say what? I have my G5 from years back, I still use it, it doesn't lag, and it is extremely accurate.
I love it to death, the switching DPI also helps a lot in games.

They used to make big mice but I haven't seen any recently except for trackballs.
My friend used to have a rather large mouse, i think logitech, that looked like this one.

I found with my G5 that the mouse surface made a big difference for how it moved. Like it wouldn't even track with the smooth side of my funcpad. Yet it could track on clear plastic/glass. Worked fine on the ruff side of the funcpad.

To those of you G5 haters out there; Eat your heart out and enjoy being jealous as you always are.

G5 has accuracy problems? And it lag? You freaking kidding me?
G5 is the best mouse in its class out there. and It owns in any FPS MP and single play. :p

Moving from Ball and the first time I used G5 in SOF2 I swear I thought I was botting; how accurate this thing is and, the extreme target tracking is priceless. lol.

You must set the mouse setpoint to recognize game by adding game Executable into setpoint and then disable game mouse accelerating and sensitivity options in the game menu.

Good Luck.

Actually it isn't the best in it's class. The Razar diamondback's sensor is a little better at the same price range. And the MX518 is also better and in a lower price range. ;)
But I'm sure the G5 doesn't have any lag issues.

This mouse owns all of these mice in pure 1337ness...

But in all seriousness, get the MX518, I have it, and it's very good.

I say this mouse: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104108&Tpk=logitech+marble+mouse
Takes a week to get used to but after that, it's easy. No more moving the mouse around! All you have to do is use your thumb for left-clicking, the three midle fingers to move the marble around, and your pinky to right-click. Feels comfortable laying your entire hand on the mouse too. Only disadvantages is that there is no scroll wheel. Also grime builds up on the sensors but that can be cleaned by lifting the marble out and wiping the sensors. Just a quick fling on the marble and you can blast your enemy right behind you online!

Your friend's old mouse, "the mouseman" (i think that's what they called it) is simply the greatest mouse ever. I used it to beat quake 3 on nightmare. Shortly after it died after years of use.

THE END

The Logitech G5 is still undefeated.

However, I have to say I did obsess over the Razer DeathAdder for one month.
Then, I just got totally annoyed with the glossy surface from having to constantly wipe it clean (and it builds up super fast too).
It's now sitting in my closet waiting for a potential buyer (I got it when I went on vacation in asia).

When you feel the G5 it just feels completely natural.
It is covered all around with a nice coating that provides just enough friction plus comfort.

A past contender was the mx518. Similarily, it, too, was glossy all around. So, I sold it a week after I bought it.

I got my G5 2 years ago, so I'm using the 'rust' version. Its successor is the G5 ver. 2. It is what the original G5 should have been.
It has the extra thumb button; exactly like the mx518.

So, if you are looking for a mouse I very highly recommend either one of the G5 series.
