I'm really not sure if someone posted this already, I searched for it...but didn't see anything.

Near the end where Gordon rides the buggy up to the APC and the big ship thing is shooting at him...I noticed you can see the thing firing at him through the APC...Anyone else notice this?

Valve referred to this as "The sorting bug" and said they will fix it.

If I am not mistaken, this happened every once in a while in the original didnt it?

1. I noticed in the E3 video that the spark effects were coming through the cars. Will this be fixed in the final version and if not is there some way to?

Yes, the sorting bug will be fixed

I've seen similar things before. In Unreal Tournament, lights don't disappear behind object, they simply begin to fade out when an object gets in front of them. I don't remember if UT2003 does the same thing or not.

EDIT: typo

EDIT2: Yes, it does it in UT2003 as well. I don't know if this is related at all to the HL2 thing though.

That's actually an intentional effect. If you look at a light source for a moment, then put something in front of it, it takes a split second for your eyes to adjust. The corona's fading away in UT2003 is an attempt to replicate this effect.

You mean like when you look at the sun and then look away you see sort of an afterimage?

Or you look at a blob then see Jesus?

There are lots of bugs in the E3 demo movies and this is to be expected. After all, they represent the state of the game over 6 months ago.

Ditto...I've always been impressed with that effect in the game...just adds another level to it.

Indeed.

Can someone make a sticky about that please?

Although, I actually quite liked that bug (and the blood splats): It was all so retro:)

Ahh, makes sense then. I still don't care for it though. Most of the lights I notice this on are fairly dim, and you don't get that kind of effects from dim lights. I'm trying it now with the green LED on my volume control and a chinese takout box, and not getting anything.:cheese:

Surely there should be no need. If the light is bright enough to leave an after image, then it will stay anyway.

I realise that the whole picture is direct light, so i understand why they might do it. But it seems a bit silly, after all it appears some people ahve already confused this with some kind of bug.

Im not really bothered by it, im not gonna shout out OMG!! THEY LEFT A REVESE RICOCHET IN!!! when it does eventually come out. Im not that picky, ill probably have them turned off along with shadows anyway, the only game that shadows were useful in was MGS2..

I dont think anyone will get so upset or anything when the game comes out by the smallest detail, mainly because they will have the mother of all games sitting in they're drives witht he all to familiar theme music playing as the valve logo shows...

It's just a placeholder effect, they've probably as we speak changed the whole *what the hell do you call it, maybe bullethitflash*-effect.

For some reason I find this really amusing. :E

Have any of you noticed that when we see the Bazooka (rocket launcher or whatever) on the ground, it looks a lot like Darth Maul's Saber.

LOL

I don't think I've ever encountered that effect (in real life, that is). Well, not the way it looks in the Unreal engines. To me it just looks like a bug. Always. But no big deal.

I don't think there is something in any game that is exactly like in real life, I think the Unreal effect is pretty good, and if you don't, well look at the title of the game, its UNREAL and not REAL.

Shouldn't your eyes do this automatically then and have no need for the game engine to do it? Looks like a bug to me

That's exactly it. I assumed that the effect was either a bug or just trying to be flashy with light effects. Like lens flare in FPSs...

No they shouldn't because your screen can never reproduce the actual brightness of light sources that is needed to automatically create this effect. Would be a bit dangerous if screens were that bright, after an hour of gaming you'd be blind

Lens flares are completely unrealistic, only trough camera lens you are able to achieve that effect, another thing that would be very unrealistic in a FPS would be depth of filed. Your eyes do not produce that, a camera lens (or sniper scope, there is some use for it even in a FPS) has it but not your eyes, your eyes only have focus. I wonder how they will get this in the future games. But the fading of the light sources is quite realistic, and when you think of it, it is the first time such an effect as been used. I remember when I first saw bumb mapping and I thought 'OMG this is supposed to look realistic?', but now technology has evolved and I think they will get the effects right.

Isn't that just the lasersight?

-- edit --

wait :D i see it now.. Dumbass me is
