You know, some people actually want to try how the game run on their PC's. Some places don't handle refunds so it's better if he tries a demo, rather than buying a game that won't work on his computer very well, or at all. And some people aren't Half-Life fans, some people probably just heard about Half-Life 2 with all the hype going.
My guess is that Valve will release a demo at around January 2005.
