A fix if your preload is stuck at 88%

Try this people, if simply restarting doesn't work.

Shut down Steam. Go into your steamapps folder and move all the gcf files (that's right, all 4 gigs) somewhere else. Start Steam and tell it to preload HL2. You'll see 0% completed, and then it will spend some time creating the gcf files again. When the preload has downloaded something (it should say 0.1% complete at least), shut down Steam, move the old gcf files back into SteamApps folder. Start Steam again - it will continue the preload normally.

Worked for me, and I was in the situation of many others, with HL2 completely preloaded and stuck on 88% today.

close down steam, go to the steam directory, and delete the file called clientregistry.blob

restart steam, should fix it.

That's what I did initially, still didn't help. What I said, I hope, should fix it if nothing else works - again, did for me.

Well, if it continues the download and again gets to 100%, then it's most likely worked properly.

Of course, I can imagine the frustration of anyone who gets a "corrupted download" message on Nov 16.

I just tried something there. if u move ur cs source gcf file out of the cache folder and somewere else. restart steam and continue preload , it will restart u at 77%. it seems to b working fine. Hope this helps someone out

Wow, I can't believe how many people got stuck with this pre-load problem. This occured to me once, but it was just a matter of pausing/restarting Steam a few times.

I was stuck at 69% and someone told me to remove the counterstrike source GCF file and continue from there and it worked.
I think it's a matter of removing your last preloaded file maybe.

It was stuck for me then i pressed "Pause" and pressed it again then it started to work

This is how i fixed mine. I did everything the 2 people on top said but it didnt work. So i tryed to just login my other account and it started to preload again. Since the preload files arnt for any given account it counted for all.
