A general forum observation

I've only been visiting these forum for a week or so but I notice there is a lot of conflict and tension between it's members. A greater percentage of threads lead to name calling and bitching than other forums I've visited. Why?

Well I think it has something to do with the fact that the game is extremely good. In our hyped anticipation for any news we are getting unnecessarily edgy. When the videos are delayed for whatever reason there seems to be many people eager to agressively blame Steam or Valve.

I think this forum would be better off if everyone can relax a bit more and have informed, polite discussions about the game we all love instead of jumping down each others throats. Can we please have less flaming and more understanding and consideration, especially for newbs like myself. Too many times have I seen "Why don't your read this F#*^$ thread before posting" or just the "old news" comment. Well the simple fact is that not everyone has the time nor inclination to read every thread, especially when some are so ambiguously titled.

This forums has a lot to offer (the first sticky is the best in my opinion) but the amount of flaming is making this forum less enjoyable to read. Please take it easy guys ... there still 76 days to go!

It seems the more we are given the more we complain. If HL2 didn't look so damn good we wouldn't be complaining about little things like the way a few dots in G-Mans neck are white ... to me the other 1/2 million pixels looked pretty darn good. Stop expecting Half-life 2 to be real-life (like saying his teeth don't look real) - instead compare this technology to the original HL - or any other PC game. It's awesome!

I couldnt agree more. Hell, I wouldnt care If they didnt fix the white dots on his neck, or if his hands were 2d! This game already has some many good aspects I could care less about white dots, or 2d teeth.

Actually this forum was quite peaceful until word of the media broke around June 30. Also it got really crowded here since that "Valve Info" thread was started.

Yea, that would be great if people can calm down and discuss HL2 and other stuff without going ape shit, but you have to realize that there's alot of members here and this community is getting bigger everyday, so it's gonna be difficult to encourage all these members to have "polite discussions". You just have to accept that there's always going to be that one person to start shit, and it's all on the other members if they decide to contribute to it, making it worse.

Well... you have to understand that if the thread was already discussed and discussed to the fullest, some people don't like to post the same thing all over again, especially if they typed out a whole page. And if the subject was already discussed thru 3 or more pages, I don't really see the point in starting all over again. The wrong thing is that when a member has to flame another member about a thread already discussed, now that is un called for.

There's always gonna be those guys who aren't satisfied with the game no matter how good it turns out.

That's only natural; when everything else looks so believable, the tiny details that disturb the 'realism' will stick out.
Nobody would mind the dots on the '98 G-Man.

I don't have a problem with this kind of in-detail scrutiny/criticism, it's the immature way it's sometimes delivered that's unwarranted.

Perhaps this forum needs an age filter - no one under 30 years allowed.

This forum is quite lively, threads have a way of disappearing off the front page very rapidly and it's not always easy to navigate through the 'fluff' to find the info you're looking for, even when using the "search" function.

This will only get worse over the next couple of months.

I think the general section has been spammed to hell.
When I first was lurking around this forum(some months ago) things seemed more controlled and in harmony.

Now there's like 1000 new members, and they are all posthungry maniacs. Everybody seems to be posting stuff that's not interesting at all, just to increase their postcount..

Hmm if HL2 is going to take over all those bitchin kiddies of CS in MP mods and stuff i won't play it alot,even if it's amazingly good,..i'd play it rather with friends then...(there will be kiddies that's for sure,we're on the world wide web,nothing against them in general,if i had kids they would have to behave themselfs at the net i think ...)..it ruins the adult occasional gamers fun if some kiddies are whining and bitchin and not playing and having fun ..and hell if they even come up with things like 'pownzorzs' and stuff ??? computergeekchinees

Hmm seems HL1 had the largest communety..so more people are bitchin ,more kiddies reply..think it's normal..sometimes you have to think..oooh well that's a 12 years old..i'm gonna play and just have fun..if it's gettin to worse then i'll search another place on the web ..mostly i stay away if it's gettin to bitchy and childish..i'm almost 30..

Yeah, but it speaks volumes about how desperate we are for new material that we've over-analysed the tiny amount of media Valve has given us to the point where we're unsatisfied with the G-Man's teeth.
I find it hard to believe that, whilst playing the game, you will notice his TEETH when he's speaking to you - you'll be concentrating too hard on what he's saying or what's going on around you.

I just joined up yesterday, and I really love these forums. I'd definitely love to see some more intelligent Half-Life 2 discussions. I think that we have enough dedicated, cool Half-Lifers to turn these forums around and back to the "cool, controlled" state it was in previously. Maybe if the people who are totally for Half Life and stuff but they DONT spam or complain unreasonably could start posting more and leading discussion threads, this forums might become a better place. Just a thought.

As for the whole G-Man teeth thing, I think that's a reasonable thing to complain about. No, it's not worth going over and begging valve to change it, but it's worth mentioning that when a virtual world is so incredibly realistic and then the teeth are pure, untextured white, they stand out a little. Not a big deal, just a minor gripe. It's true, when you're actually playing the game, you won't care that much, but it's one of those things that makes you say, "oh yeah, I'm just playing a game."
