First off I want to say that I have a legit copy of HL2, the holiday 2006 version.

My steam jobby seems to be running fine and when I went to continue playing HL2 today steam updated my HL2 game.

This is my update history:

Latest Update: April 19, 2006
[-] April 19, 2006 - Current Release

Changes/Additions
Fixed bug where NPCs would ignore hintbrushes that should block line of sight.
[+] May 23, 2005

Bug fixes
Fixed an intermittent crash ("failed to open models\gman_high.vvd") in Half-Life 2
[+] May 12, 2005

Bug fixes
Fixed some NPC actions not being properly randomized
[+] January 10, 2005

Changes/Additions
Weapon script files are preloaded at startup, instead of when they are accessed. This will reduce some hitches while playing Half-Life 2.
Improved the performance of writing out save games. This will reduce the pause when you pass over an autosave trigger in Half-Life 2, or when you press the quicksave button.
Improved the performance of writing out the thumbnail image for save games. This will also reduce the pause when passing over an autosave trigger or pressing the quicksave button.
Increased cache memory usage for machines that have greater than 512MB of physical memory. This will reduce hitching due to cache thrashing.
Optimized the sound cache manager, which will reduce hitching as a result of sound cache thrashing.
Minor optimization to the world renderer and world collision.
Minor optimization to the way that asynchronous sound files are loaded.
Optimization to the way that sounds were loaded that are trigged by acting sequences.
Optimization to reduced the number of times model sequences are iterated on per frame.
[+] December 10, 2004

Changes/Additions
Solved disc in drive incompatibility error
[+] December 14, 2004

Changes/Additions
Optimization to the Steam filesystem to reduce game launch and level transition time
[+] December 22, 2004

Changes/Additions
Fixed sound stuttering problems caused by thread contention in sound system
[+] November 30, 2004

Bug fixes
fixed graphics card crash caused by incorrect buffer allocations
[+] August 26, 2004

Changes/Additions
Made available for pre-load

Now some of my saves have been deleted and I find myself back at Route Kanal with A.I Disabled.

I am quite frankly livid because not only have I joined 3 forums to find an answer but none of the solutions I have found actually work including the solution on this forum which has now been locked.

I also found a post somewhere which said that a new patch was available which fixes my problem but I can't find it anywhere nor can I find somewhere to update my game manually.

The Steam site dosen't seem to have any update links or any mention of this problem either.

Please help me before I throw this game out of the window.

At least you did some research first.

If you REALLY had a legit version, your last update would NOT have been over a year ago - especially when you say Steam updated your game "today". I also find it extremely suspicious that you have the "holiday 2006 edition", and it is also only updated to 2006 - it's like you downloaded some sort of "updated to april 2006" pack from your piracy source of choice. If you had a legit, Steam version (as you claim), you would know that it pretty much forces the updates upon you, and you CERTAINLY wouldn't be able to go anywhere near a year without being forced to update. Also, if you had a legit version, you would have used Steam to verify your game cache, and download about a years worth of updates, in an attempt to solve your A.I. problems.

The A.I. disable bug is a well known issue that ALMOST exclusively occurs in pirated versions. On the odd occasion that it occurs in a legit version, it is easily solved through Steam.

Also, you are looking "everywhere" for "updates to download" and a "patch". You have NO idea how Steam and it's updates work at all.

Saying you have Steam / legal version of a game does not make it true. Especially when you prove that you are lying. If you STILL want to try and say you have a legal version, then I have already told you how someone that actually DID pay for their game would fix it.

Throw your pirated game out the window, as you suggested. Just make sure you are still holding it as it plummets to earth.

Hey Shasta we missed you man.

Damn thief. Go catch a train with your face!

Maybe he avoided the updates because he hadn't logged in for a year?

Just sayin'...

If you had taken the time to check, you would have noticed that this update history is exactly the same as anyone else with a so-called "legit" copy. Just right-click on HL2 in the steam menu and click on
View update news. Nothing wrong there.

The same. People who blame this guy stop being an idiot.

How's New Zealand?

The fact that he is searching the net for "patches" and "updates" suggests that he has NO idea how Steam works. The thing is, the way Steam is there every step of the way for installing, updating etc, you just CAN'T be left wondering how to update the game. The guy is an idiot, or a pirate.

As for the update logs - well, I don't have the game installed at the moment, and had no way to check the log. However, I am surprised that it lists april 2006 as the last update. I assumed that Steam had a calendar handy when making their updates, or at least SOME idea that it is 2007 now, but apparently not. We all know there have been plenty since April 2006. Oh well.

In any case, I have already told him how a person with a legit version would solve this - use Steam to update / verify. Problem solved if he is legit, and if not, well....

He said "he tried to update his game manually" which means he may know how steam operates but he just doesn't have full acquaintance with the whole operation of a game delivery program. i.e., he thought he has to download a patch himself so as to solve this weird problem. Everyone will do this when he comes to such desperate, right?

I don't think all updates is included in the record. Since update of half-life 2, the game, and update of source engine is two distinct things.

Yeah... I just checked my update history, and the latest update is

Fixed bug where NPCs would ignore hintbrushes that should block line of sight.

I think the two reasons you gave of why this guy is having this problem are very unrealistic. He's just confused about it, and wonders if steam skipped an update somewhere. I've done that a time or 2 myself with ep1, especially with the jerky NPC animations.

I also found a post somewhere which said that a new patch was available which fixes my problem but I can't find it anywhere nor can I find somewhere to update my game manually.

The Steam site dosen't seem to have any update links or any mention of this problem either.

now clearly he was misled. I don't think it's fair to call him an idiot just because he tried that.

On the other hand, if you didn't pirate it, i'd suggest reinstalling it, which I'm sure you've done, setting the ai_disable to 0, or verifying game cache. If that doesn't work, then your version's either shot, or not legit.

Dear Shasta: Shut. The ****. Up.

It's hard to miss the pop-up "update window" or the fact that the game status bar says "Updating".
