A mission to put an orbiting spacecraft around the Sun

theres no way theyd do it unless their absolutly sure it would work, what would they tell people if they screwed up " whoops....it melted " :laugh:

"A mission to put an orbiting spacecraft around the Sun "

sounds like something Bush would say:

"as president I pleadge to put a man on the surface of the sun by 2008!"

Yeah, NASA never do anything unless they're positive it'll work.
"Wait wait wait, this isn't right - the sattellite's way off course..."
"What? Why would that be? We put the distances in perfectly - metric system and everything."
"Metric system? Were we supposed to be using the metric system?"
"Yeah, weren't you?"
"Pffft. I ain't using no weirdo hippie Commie metric system, foo'. You're beginning to sound un-American to me, boy..."
"But, but... We decided - metric system - don't you remember?"
"Metric system? A WITCH!!!"
<Batters freakin' Commie metric lover with plastic model of Neil Armstrong>

Thank-you for your lovely comment :rolleyes:

Do you have anything else that you care to enlighten us with? Perhaps some other off-base comments you would like to share. Maybe you can add Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein in this conversation too. That would be lovely.

It was just a joke, blahblahblah. It wasn't a jibe at America, just at Bush. And let's face it, he deserves it :)

NASA has enough on its plate as it is, with a crumbling ISS, fixing the Space Shuttle, repairing Hubble, developing a new means of transportation and Bush's plan to put a man on the Moon/Mars. I don't expect you will see too many additions to their agenda.

Lets face it, I don't what to hear Cpt. Stern's remarks about Bush. He should go to a political forum if he constantly has to make his opinion heard.

heh, if only it were off base...

It was a joke. Lighten up!

I came to this thread to read an article about the potential of launching a probe around the sun, not to see some yahoo add Bush into the mix.

So read the article and ignore him?
It sounds like this is a long-standing grudge you have against Cpt. Stern so surely you'd expect the possibility of it coming up?
See already the thread's been inadvertently hijacked.

Well, I did read the article. I'm amazed at how much energy the probe would have to get rid of. 2.4 Mega Watts is a lot of energy. I forget how many households 2.4 megawatts can power.

I didn't expect Cpt. Stern to bring up Bush to this topic. I thought Cpt. Stern had something productive to bring to this thread. I guessed wrong.

I'm sorry for hijacking the thread.

oh for christ's sake. Shut up about it.. take it to PM and stop polluting...

A spacecraft around the sun would not be very useful, it'd have to be very far out, and would have a very long orbit...
now a satellite is a different thing.. I think a satellite around the sun would be a good idea

I found out from many othar satillit3s that the Sun is very hot and that I dun care.

Look, everyone, the plan will surely work.... all they need to do is send the probe at night then, it wont be hot! :D :D

what are you talking about? as el Chi said, it was a joke, it has nothing to do with politics. You seem to be the only one upset about what was a feeble jibe at bush ...big freakin' deal!

yes but then they wont be able to find it :)

(that was a joke too blahblahblah)

Cptstern, tsk tsk, you should know better. Free speech and opinions are illegal. So keep your mouth shut, big brother is watching j00!!!!!!1 And whats the point in sending this up? They won't be able to get close enough to get any real detailed images or readings. They are probably better off surveiling from orbit around earth using high powered telescopes instead of wasting the money for this.

Blah has a point, people bring politics into this forum way too much. A lot of threads move onto Bush and related subjects, when they don't want to talk about it but someone has to bring their opinion in. You see, already this thread has moved off the topic completely all because of one remark, which quite frankly was a cheap shot at bush.

Anyway....Back to the original topic.

They might as well try innervision, if people didn't go out on the edge we would never get anywhere.

I frankly think orbitting the sun is a damn stupid idea for how much money etc its going to use :| can't we just be happy with probes to saturn and mercury? the russians already got venus, and those 3 are about everything interesting in our solar system.

this reminds me of an old rocko's modern life episode.

But the sun is the most important thing in the solar system :O

...along with earth and me that is :)

yeah, but it has a decent chance of not working, its pretty damn big, and most nations are in debt to an invisble entity :|

You mean...the Illuminati?

Sounds cool, but they better keep it on a safe distance.

Its interesting but i wonder what exactly they plan to achieve from the information gathered. Or is it just for fun?

jeez it was one small comment blown out of porportion. If I had used anyone but bush no one would have said anything. The problem here is that far too many conservatives have knee-jerk reactions to any form of criticsim even if it's in jest. Some of you need to lighten up, not everything is an attack on america.

back to the sun ....there's far more important things to explore in space. I personally would like to see a return trip to the moon to establish a permanent base which would be the largest leap in terms of future space exploration.

Yes. Let's send Michael Howard.

I don't really see the point in a moon base; not right now, at least. I'd rather see a manned mission to Mars, although it would take absolutely years to get there.

Who let the dogs out!

Send some guys to the moon but just remember it ain't owned by America. Us Brits invented the moon!

I never said it was an attack on America. I just don't want to hear it. Want to bash Bush? Fine, create your own thread and label it "Bush Bashing" I'll be sure to avoid it and you can have your fun with Bushisms and whatnot. Anyways, I bet you would get defensive if I brought up a subject that had no relevance to the topic at hand and people were attacking your belief in the subject.

There is a fine line between a criticism and a jest. Who are you to determine a what a small comment is? Remember, you are on the other side of the fence. I don't even mind the ocassional criticism (in fact I think it is healthy to bring up the ocassional criticism), but when you have to bring up something constantly, it just gets ridiculuous. I even laugh at the Flash cartoons poking fun at Bush if it is warranted. It kinda of gets old after 20 of them and having people constantly bash Bush. Remember, the latest polls show Bush and Kerry are in a statistical tie. That means there are tons of people who don't agree with your viewpoints. :/

~~~
I think studying the sun is very important. IIRC, the sun has an energy/heat/radiation variance of 1% which is nearly nothing. However, that 1% is enough to cause serious problems to us. Stuff like solar flares and radiation bursts pose a direct threat to our satelites, power grids and our ability to space travel. If we can develop a better and faster way of detecting these anamolies, we can better protect our satelitles, power grids, and help keep our astronauts safe.
Though having a moon base would be cooler. I guess it stems from childhood dreams.
Well, SOHO was used to successfully predict solar flare ups which can cause blackouts and cell phone screwups.
I imagine this would do much the same.
I'm gonna land on the sun, but only when it's night, then I won't burn up.
