Let me begin by saying that among other things, calculus is not one thing I am passionate of. I do however, manage to get As on the tests and homeworks, except for this last test (I got a 58). If I had gotten around an 80, I would have been able to exempt the final test.

However, today they gave us a draft of our grades (a little report card draft that you can take and tell the school operators if there are any mistakes). Somewhere along the line, someone or something must've screwed up, because it says that instead of getting a 58, I got a 95.

This means I don't have to take the final test.

I could go to the professor and tell him if it's ok - he will most likely oblige me to take it, or, if no further thing can be done, he will let it go. This is of course, if I go tell him. If I don't go tell him, then they'll post a note in the bulletin saying which final tests I don't have to take. Calculus will show up. There is a risk here, however; he may find out and then he may make me fail the final test, which means I have to take a remedial (or I donno how you call it) test. To avoid this, I plan to tell him AFTER they have posted the note on the bulletin, so there is no possible solution and I don't have to take the test.

I'm almost positive (I'm gonna study at a uni something related to music) my job won't require anything in calculus but the basics...

Being the idiot I am I'll prolly be self-forced to tell him the truth so I take the final test. I'm not really asking advice on what to do (but if you have any, be my guest) - what I'm asking here is, what would you do in my position?

Keep the 95 and keep your mouth shut.

Alot of times I get a test back and by a magical fluke I accidently get points for a question that I totally BS'ed my way through. Should I go to the teacher and demand that I don't get any points for the question?? Hell no! Thats the whole reason I BS'ed the question in the first place... to perhaps get some points for it.

ffs man/woman take the 95% and dont look back ..if caught just feign ignorance

"I got a 95? ....is that good?" ..."what's a test?"

But your BS was probably right. Mine certainly isn't... it's mathematically proven :P

Hehe, I'm planning on scanning my test and manipulating it so I can take it again, this time getting a 95. But nah, I donno.

Those are wise words, you'd do good to listen.

Don't be stupid. College is no joking matter... you're putting real money into it all and you would be an idiot to throw away a free 95 points just because of your 'moral dilemma'.

Take the test. If you're discovered lying, you're f*cked in every sense of the word.

I could take a fake one and give myself a 95, if they ask me for evidence.

There's no way they can prove their arguments, unless they keep a copy of my 58-graded test... then I'd be ****ed in every sense of the word.

If you actively TRY to fool them, yes. If you feign ignorance, they probably won't care.

Yeah but if you just throw away the 58 paper, all the evidence will be gone.

Anyways, it's good to know the material but I know you can know calculus and still f*** up on the test, I've done it in my HS Calc class. Keep the free 95 points, but know the material.

Well, do you REALLY want to take the risk? These things tar you for life.

They probably do. I'd come clean, I don't think "but you made a mistake!" would suffice as an excuse. And hell, there's always the super-rare chance that you telling the truth causes him to forgive you, or something.

I'd probably just keep my mouth shut. I'm in calc right now and I'd kill for a random test to show up as a 95%. xD

Come clean, and take the exam. It can only make you smarter.

Remember: Music is math.

There is no question as to what the right thing to do is...obviously coming clean and admitting the mistake.

Now it just depends on how moral you are as a person.

Because he's hurting so many people with his evil, evil lies... right?

No one is getting hurt here, there's no 'moral dilemma'. The only person getting screwed over by this, is possibly himself. You're there to learn something, you're there for yourself, you can get through it by cheating but in the end you're just fucking yourself. But if you think you don't need whatever you're skipping, then I see no harm done.

It's no choice at all - take the test.

There was an occasion where the same thing happened to me, and it's pretty tempting to just keep you trap shut. I felt it's better to get less marks than letting my friends know that I took the easy way out. A classmate of mine got double his expected marks in another year, but he decided to just take them and shut up. A few months later, he was asked for the paper for some obscure reason. The forgery was detected and he was thoroughly raped. And then again by his parents.

I'm not saying that has to happen, but there's a good chance it might.

I never said he was hurting anyone else.

I was merely pointing out that there is no real question as to whether cheating is wrong or not. So it's not a question of whether he is doing the right thing, but whether a question of how moral he is and how far he is willing to take those morals.

You are probably right in this case. However, cheating can have very adverse consequences. I'm in engineering and if I don't learn the material well enough I could have a chance of killing people in the future. Same for a few other professions.

Also, a situation doesn't have to involve others for there to be a moral dilemma.

Uhm screw it, keep the 95% and say you thought it was from a curved grade. =P

I doubt you will be really regret keeping this score, especially if you are getting straight A's in the rest of the class. You deserve the 95% and dont let anyone tell you otherwise :)

I couldn't live with myself if I did that. But it's your call.

this is what would swing it for me - take the 95 and if it ever comes up you just can't remember/find the test results. it it were the other way round I would be seriously worried but if you are already consistently turning in 90s then you should be fine

I would tell them the truth - heck, in all likelihood, you can do the final test very well anyway.

The problem is, if you're discovered, the consequences would indeed be far worse than what they immediately appear. You'd probably be forced to take a remedial test and such, which would suck, but not *that* much. The bigger problem would be that your reputation would be fuc*ed. A good reputation is hard to earn and very easy to destroy. Get caught cheating like that once, and that will become the first thing your professors remember when they think of you. If you're unlucky, it can even come back and bite you in the ass after college.

Yay

Well, I finally went to the professor and confessed.

Strangely, as Slacker predicted, he let it go and said I didn't have to take the test. In other words, it was OK by him. I think I'm gonna go and take it anyway, just for the heck of it... but I don't really have to :)

Thanks everyone for your advice and opinions.
