Well guys. You all know and hate me i'm sure, because I express my opinions about hating doom 3. I said I was probably not going to buy it, but in fact did order it, and have played it for quite a few hours. I'm just gonna give you my opinion, in a new thread, because I love to hear how people need to post in one of the already existing threads =)
The game was very much what I expected it to be in the end, but i'll describe my views on the different aspects of it.
Graphics: The graphics in this game are VERY nice indeed. I'm not going to say they are better than half-life 2, because I have not experienced half-life 2's graphics first hand, and frankly I don't want to start anything like that. The polygon counts are really nice, character/level modelling well done, and the shadow effects which are the main lure of the game for most people are outstanding. The game kind of stuttered alot on my computer, at ultra high settings, without anti aliasing, but I think that's because of my 512mb ram, instead of the 1024 I normally have. Expect to have a fast computer if you want the greatest graphics available in this game.
Gameplay: The gameplay is exactly how I expected it. While the game does the job quite well at spooking the player, most of this is done via scripted sequences which ultimately cut down on the replayability of the game as a whole. At it's core, the game is a very generic dungeon crawl type of game where you blast everything that moves. While some say it's 'oldschool', my answer to them is, just because it is oldschool, doesn't mean it's going to be fun enough to keep you entertained for many hours on end. Games are supposed to evolve as time goes on, to keep the players interested for hours on end and to cater to new generations. On a sidenote, I was very dissapointed at the lack of secondary fire options on weapons, and the ability to carry and fire a flashlight at the same time.
Sound: The sound was very well done, but since i'm not much of a sound freak, and I have a generic card, this isn't saying much coming from me. I don't hold sound in high esteem when playing a game, as all games generally sound awesome to me unless they are repetitive.
Physics: What physics? The physical interaction between objects in this game is abysmal. The player can fire at things or bump against most things and not have them move about how you might expect. They just don't move about at all! The only things that generally move are small and scarce objects and even then it's not especially well done. Definately don't expect a game where physics interaction is going to be at the core of the game like half-life 2.
I guess that's all I can really talk about without going into spoilers. Besides, I suck at writing reviews, but I guess it was at least fair to give the people who think i'll just bash the game without playing it, a reason to think otherwise.
