A new computer

It's hard finding a case like I mentioned. So many have side fans but no front fans. ha
Here is an interesting one. A little more $ up front although the rebate helps plus free shipping. It has 2 120mm fans. Even has noise padding on the side panel. Not sure if you like doors or not though.

Hey Asus. I really like the first case you linked me and the fan, especially since it seems to be quite solid by the reviews, and it's cheaper so I can afford to possibly bump my HD choice up again.

Question though. On my motherboard, it says it is replaced by another one.

That other one has far fewer reviews, more mixed reviews, but it considerably cheaper.

I'm confused about which one I should go for... the one I have or the one it is replaced by.

It's replaced by this one it says.

If you want to OC I would probably stick with the older trusted board. I dunno. Otherwise they look basically the same.

That's sort of what I'm leaning towards, yeah.

And thanks to your wisdom on the case, I was able to bump my HDD back to a 750gig one.

YAAAY!

What do ATI's current top cards look like? Personally if I was razzy, I'd look into ATI instead of Nvidia, simply because Nvidia's drivers broke HL2's anti-aliasing and I could never get it fixed with any drivers.

Also, I'd agree with Krynn on his recommendation for an Intel quad-core. A bit more expensive and alittle more aggravating to buy mbs for than AMD, but probably well worth it in the end.

No hardware in particular I'd recommend myself that hasen't already been posted, as all have been pretty good recommendations so far.

Just make sure you get the stuff that's on rebate to save you some cash.

ATI 4K series. Not sure when they come out. Or the price.

I would go with the new mobo revision. I like the Quad Core because you can run FRAPS, have the OS running background programs, then running whatever game you are playing, then if the game uses more than 1 core it will use the last core that is left. They say in TF2 there is more facial animations, etc with a multi-core CPU. Besides the Quad core costs $20 more than the CPU you listed. I think you can afford $20 for that extra 2 cores. ;) Why risk upgrading in the future anyways? Just get the Quad Core so you don't have to keep upgrading the CPU. *Also Vista uses all 4 cores constantly on my system.

in the link that Asus posted, it shows that TF2 only uses 1 core

Lost Planet from Capcom uses 4 cores

But see, I'm finding it's not just about getting the quad core, and the extra cores. I seem to be finding everywhere and everyone saying that the duo cores perform far better than the quads in most applications and games, no question. And that it'll be a long time before more games come out to utilize the extra cores anyways.

And now I'm leaning towards the Q6600 again... even though last night when I went to bed I was sold on the E8400.

EDIT: This little thing has been delayed until further notice. I'm sure it might eventually come into fruition but I don't know when. As of yet we're not ordering it immediately, to my dismay.

You can't tell a guy to start researching for a new computer and then say you're going to buy it on the next day, and then reneg on it with delays! You just can't do that!

Now I won't be able to do anything else but think about this computer... argh.

I still don't regret my decision to go for the HD3870, and it's got better image quality than my friend's 8800GTS on Ep2, at least.

Sexiest case ever
I'm not sure why everyone goes for the Antec 900. It's far too much for what most people need.

If you're an overclocker, it basically gives you a perfect cooling solution, not to mention great cable management and plenty of space for all the cards and heatsinks you need. It might be a little overkill, but it's undeniably nice.

It's also humungous. By "all the cards and heatsinks you need" you're assuming someone's running a damn server on it, or they have plenty of cash to spread around.

And that is my case, Asus. Beautifully cool, quiet and modestly stylish all at the same time.

<3

Those cases are fugly. Like... 1990s fugly. Lian Li cases are lame and boring looking. They look like cheap 40 dollar cases you can get at best buy off the shelves.

That's because cheap companies try to copy the best. :p
But you can tell the difference... IMO even Antec cases with thick black plastic look cheap in comparison to lian li cases. 900, p180 (my case) etc.

Lian Li cases are minimalist.

as are Cooler Master ATC cases. Both makes are beautifully engineered, and neither looks like a Power Rangers lunch box.

Raz - looks like my new spec is looking to be pretty similar to yours, and thanx to Asus I'm definitely sold on the E8400 Wolfdale as it seems to out perform the competitors in so many benchmarks, even the quads, as well as being similar in performance but insanely cheaper than my first choice, the E8500.

My chosen GPU is different though - a 9800GX2 1GB dual gpu, hot but v. fast, and my mobo will be an ASUS 780i Striker II Formula, with a 750W Zalman ZM750-HP Dual Heatpipe cooler for the cpu. For memory, I'm going for 3GB of Crucial Ballistix DDR2 1066.

Shame your upgrade has gone on hold, the upside is when you get around to it later the better hardware will be cheaper... but I still feel your pain. Perhaps you should remind your dad that what he doesn't spend today will only be stolen by the taxman tomorrow. :cheese:

Well here's hoping the upgrade doesn't get delayed for too long CR0M.

My brother has a beige case that looks exactly like the one you guys linked to, just without the window. Hes had it for over 10 years.
Have you seen a Lian Li case in person? I have to ask.

No, but I have seen pics from every angle of that one on the internet and it looks just like my brothers case, only not beige and with a window.
