Half Life 2 is coming out and as we all know it encourages ATI over NVidia. Doom 3 has the reverse psychology. Now in the future can we expect such things to escalate to such a level that some games run good on one type of cards but crappy on the others or even worse that the game is supported only by one company of cards (ATI or Nvidia for example).

Or can we hope that the money earned by developing a game for all systems keeps the game development general. Ie: look at the consols, ubisoft develops all their games for all the consoles.

Any thoughts.

I hope that it doesn't get to the point where you will need 2 cards to run 2 games... ATi + Nvidia = Merge.

If it does get to such a point then I guarantee both companies would start designing cards that can have the feature of "pretending" to be a competetors card to ensure that it is playable in other games. Otherwise they would only be getting half the market.

Nvidia runs shit compared to ATi when using Direct X 9.

ATi runs shit compared to Nvidia when using OpenGL

Alot more games are made with Direct X nowadays so i wouldn't worry about it

I dont think it will ever get to the point where developers deliberately sabotage the performance of a game depending on who the buyer decided to buy from.

Im pretty sure that would violate alot of laws like sale of goods act here in the uk for instance.

Plus if that did happen the developer would just be limiting their own market share and NO business in their right mind would do that. I think your gonna see developers "Recomending" cards like they do already but that doesnt mean anything in the grand scheme of things :)

Neither will play either game crappy.

Except the FX series. :naughty:

Yeah, but look at the consols. Imagine the money Microsoft and Bungi could make giving the Halo lisance to the GameCube and PS2 (or the Zelda licence on the XBox), but they don't do it.

Plus, and this annoys me a lot since I have a ATI card, a lot of games I bought lately (Pandora Tomorrow, Painkiller, Prince of Persia) have that NVidia insignia in the credits. Plus I don't think there is anything illegal in developing a game that runs only on one card. I mean it's your game, do what you want.

I agree, mere NVidia and ATI and create cards that work great, rather than deveding the market and forcing more frequent and expanise updates.

They might do that in the near future, the main reason they kept Halo Xbox-only was to sell their hardware. Now that the next gen systems will be turning up, I expect to see a PS2 version of Halo...

You are terribly confused. Competition is good. Without ATI releasing the 9700 Pro, Nvidia would have never created the 6800 series. This competition has created a dramatic performance jump. As for price, the price of a video card would be just as expensive (and slower performing) if Nvidia and ATI were one company.

As for Nvidia sponsored games, you are being paranoid. Why would a developer/publisher make a game only for a specific chipset? It would severly limit the number of games that they would sell. Nvidia would not be able to put out that type of marketing money to compesnate a developer/publisher lost sales. Anyways, all Nvidia sponsered games run as good or better on ATI hardware.

You cant compare computers and console's they are entirely diffrent business models. a console is a specific market a console cannot be upgraded. and as was pointed out Microsoft bought bungie for a single reason. to push their console. and considering Microsoft are STILL in a legal battle over there own bullying tactics I dont consider your compaison a good one.

secondly you completely missed the point. It MAY not be illigal but why would ANY developer cut off what could essentially ammount to 50% of their market?! (e.g. 50% with ATI cards and 50% with Nvidia) now i realise those stats are perfect world ones but you tell me a business is going to cut off a potential revenue stream and im sorry but you are talking noncense.

OH and EDIT: ^ my post just re iterates what he said above me only he got in first ... DAMN YOU :p

!!!!!one!!ONE!!!one!!!!11111one!!!! were all doomed111!!!one

All I care is that both HL2 and Doom 3 work great, but since doom 3 is just like FarCry (I can hear all the Doom 3 fans screaming for my blood) only with better graphics and mostly inside I want HL2 to run better so ATI it is.

Quick Q: Will Doom 3 have outdoor levels, can't remember seeing one, plus it's on mars so they can't be pretty anyways and, well, you just can't make shadows as impressive outside as you can inside.

Off topic, but what is the 10 character limit?
I've been hearing that alot

I think all of DOOM3's levels are indoor, at least I havn't seen a video or a screenshot that was outdoors.

Well its mostly indoors for sure.

It's when you type less then 10 characters (letters) (not that letters :p)

It's there to prevent one-word posts like 'lol' or 'haha'.

So instead we get posts like "ha ha 10 characters blah" ;)

I heard that you can go outside in D3 but you have a limited time outside 'cause you're on mars. I'm nt sure if it was a rumour or official information. Anyway, I've seen pics of outdoor bits but they don't look accessible.

Great, war. Now i have to get my tinfoil hat out again :(

Anyways, don't read too much into the whole "nvidia the way it's meant to be played" thing.

Here's what Epic had to say about it:

Eurogamer - interview about Unreal Engine 3 said:
Eurogamer: The owners of other cards will be asking what compromises will there be for their cards?

Mark Rein: None. It's not about making the game not run well on other cards. We'd be totally stupid to not run well on ATI cards.

You hear that? Your all stupid because Epic said so!

Now where did i put my tinfoil hat, they can read your minds you know? :p

Stoopeed!

hehe I was going to reply 'Thanks'

Then I realized I was breaking the 10 character limit :p

So thanks

Slightly off topic: does anyone see Half-Life 3 and DOOM 3 becomeing another Unreal vs Quake 3 rivalry?

According to id, there might be times when you have to get out in some terrace and get a view of the locale. But other than that - it's all indoors.

I can't believe ATi still have so many fanboi's saying "omgz!!!11one ATi OwnZ nVidia !!!111eleven" when nVidia and ATi's new chip sets run so similar to each other.

Yeah, I don't see much difference between them.

i think if it ever came down to nvidia games vs. ati games you'd have at least one company that would be smart enough to step in and take the middle ground and produce a card that supported both types, then proceed to make a **** ton of money+

of course i think both companies realize this, so neither would isolate themselves from the other because it would hurt their buisiness much more than it would help.

Can you say "99.999% of people cannot afford something like that"(unless nvidia does it with there mainstream cards to)

Its only for bragging rights/marketing....nothing more.

Im pretty sure that nvidia will make no direct profit from SLI.

Well SLI worked wonders for 3dfx.

Also Alienware do their own version of SLI which works with ATI cards.
