A question on something

While playing through HL2 for the second time I noticed that the little things that carried the hopper mines don't appear anywhere else, does anyone know what they are? They float like scanners but are skinned like a gunship or strider. Did they originally have a larger role?

Sorry if it is a stupid question.

I believe they are called Scanner Version 2 or something along those lines.

They're called Shield Scanners. They only appear during Anticitizen One and Follow Freeman. Perhaps the Combine invented them during the week that Freeman was absent? They don't look completely mechanic, like the normal Scanner. They might be synths.

I found a picture of what i think you mean, and it calls them 'sheild scanners'. :)

yeah me too... anyway, why are they called "shield scanners"?

They shield you from egg and bacon bombs

They're just armoured versions of scanners.
Ah I see... anyway, no wonder it takes more than 2 shots of magnum bullets to take em down!

I just grab them with the good 'ol gravity gun and smash them into random, generic things :D

They also have a mounted cannon.

They do? I obviously killed them too quickly ;) If they are synth, I must go and study them. I am trying to make a guide to synth and synth tech.

Never noticed that. Guess I'll have to pay more attention to them.

Compare them to the normal scanner. The normal scanner is fully-metalic, while the Shield Scanner looks more life-like. It's definitely a synth. The top of it looks like it's made out of the same "material" as the strider, plus all the stuff that's hanging out of it looks like the technology that the Combine implants into the synths.

That should make an interesting read.
