Hey,

What are the chances of some bright spark creating a realistic Monkey Island mod. It's just the water effects are so good, I keep staring at them like some retard.

Then I felt like putting my gun down and just having a nice stroll. If someone could make a nice Melee Island I get down on my hands a knees and perform rude stuff on them.

Dont' get drunk at work. It's bad for you.

i love monkey island, and i would love anyone who made a mod for hl2.

That thought had never crossed my mind, that would be great! Got me thinking now....a rubber chicken instead of a crowbar?......hmm. I would love it if someone did this.

Copyright?

But a monkey island style game would be OK, and pretty neat.

hee hee G-Man with an eye patch and parrot AAHHAARRR mr Freeman!

You could create monkey island 5, only you couldn't because it's copyright. Which sucks.

Maybe some people could convince the owners of the Monkey Island series to make a monkey island 5 on source, supported by the community :p

HL2 Discworld, anybody?

Did anybody get the number on that strider?

aaahhhaaaaa disworld half life, where puzzles conist of going back in time sticking a frog in your iown throat so you can open some door in another part ofthe city, now there was a game that lasted simply because it was CRAZY

Ah.....Discworld....I remember attempting to play that game in grade 8. My highschool's library even had a copy of it (the Librarian being a fan of Pratchett).

I loved playing the Discworld games, only played them at a friend's house though. I remember thinking it was good because it was actually on a disc....haha, yeah weird.

LucasArts completely rape anyone who tries to take the slightest liberties with their copyright. I hate LucasArts so very much.

There's no way LucasArts would let this happen. Maybe Sam and Max, they seem convinced it isn't a popular franchise...

an adventure game with the source engine... interesting.

monkey-strike: source is probably as close as we are gonna get :)

True though they did give us Tie Fighter mmm sweet sound of that engine and getting kill Darth Vader when he was your wingman, although it took ages, and he got most upset!

and they did give us KOTOR, and we will be getting Republic commando and KOTOR 2, gonna be an expensive year, what with upgrading PC too grrr damn you games industry taking all my creds

i miss monkey island so much. but a realistic mod? nope, thank you.

The latest Monkey Island game was so lame I almost crapped myself with horror. It was only when I saw how nice the views in HL2 were whilst riding the coastal roads that I thought...hey, you could make a really pretty looking mod here. Rockpools by night. Palmtrees. Rock that is realistic. Finally water in a game that looks good.

Crieky. I'm obsessed by this bloody water.

Seriously though, if you can do it well, please, *someone* make a carribean/pirate map/mod.

Word to ya gran.

:monkee: :monkee: :monkee: :monkee: :monkee:

IRON MAIDEN! ECCELLENT!

Uhh, I have no idea why I said that...

I had the exact same thought a few days ago, the Monkey Island locations in source would be amazing. Or just a Monkey Island style adventure game would be a good starting point for a mod.

I agree that the last monkey island game was awful, I stopped playing halfway through, I was so appalled. Monkey Kombat..pfft.

For a successful game you'd need to go back to what made the original so good. The great sense of humour, clever puzzles, amusing characters, great locations etc.

An adventure game in Source... I could see it working... standard keys for movement, right click to select action, left click to do it, another key to select item...

You could just make a generic pirate themed adventure mod for hl2 with a lot of humour in it. There's already physics based puzzles and then there's the ability to npcs to know what happens to an item i.e. the Combine soldier who 'asks' you to put the rubbish in the bin and responds based on what you do. I think a HL2/Source based adventure game could be quite feasible.

A big word of warning, not too long ago Lucas Arts shut down all fan projects. If you create anything with anything named or like Monkey Island. They will get on yer back.

Not just named, but anything inside the game that is named the same way, or themes, or styles etc.

So basically it'd be a completely different adventure game.

Hey guys, i just -HAD- to say something about this, isnt this copyright business getting outta hand?? if the above quotes are correct then that means that can never be another pirate adventure game EVER. Surely it can be done, how many football games are there out there, yet you dont see EA getting there lawyers out at everyone of them, same for every genre, there will always be clones (thank god, or else we would be stuck with 1 game in each genre getting pumped out yearly updates) I would say it would be completely legal to make a comedic/pirate point and click style game set on an large island, why shouldnt it be, they DO NOT own neither the genre and certainly not the words comedic and/or pirate so we should use them to it's fullest. Thoughts anyone?

No, they don't own "pirate" "island" "adventure". But used in a certain way, with certain themes, well then they're going to sue your ass.

Basically, it'd have to be so completely different that there's no point having a "monkey island replica" thread, because then it'd be too similar.

Well somes guys have been making an Indiana Jones adventure game for a long time now and Lucasarts haven't done anything. But I'd still stay away from using the MI name in a mod.

Here's the Indana Jones and the Fountain of Youth fangame site: http://www.barnettcollege.com

Woo, Monkey Island rules. There was going to be this MI mod for HL1 called "Plunder 3D", but it died. I would love to see a MI HL2 mod. MI is one of my favourite games, and i visit fan sites all the time.

By the way, me and a small team are working a Grim Fandango (another adventure by LucasArts) mod for Half-Life 2. There isn't much on it yet, but there will be soon. The site has a subsection in this Grim Fandango fan site i made :)

I agree that going for a humorous pirate adventure game would be risky territory, so it would be best to steer away from there.

It shouldn't be too difficult to make an original adventure game, it can take part in any universe. With the right ingredients and creativity, a team could make a great game that captures the spirit of the great adventure games that we all remember, without resorting to copying.

Anyone wanna start a project? :D

I think this is a brilliant idea. Whilst there would be certain limitations as to what could be done, a Monkey Island inspired Mod could be done, and LucasArts can't do a damn thing unless you have specific reference to Monkey Island and/or you use a name, character or something from the Monkey Island games.
Neat idea, I may have to give this a try...

Edited the title to reflect the fact you can't do anything even remotely like Monkey Island without permission.

I think you could still get away with a comedic pirate mod, maybe even cartoonish in a similar style to MI(Well not too similar). Rather than just taking influence from Monkey Island there are plenty of other places to take influence for example Johnny Depp's character in Pirates of the Carribbean (Jack Sparrow, I think). Or there's real world examples like Edmund Teach AKA Blackbeard who used to set alight fuses in his beard so it appeared he had this rather demonic burning beard. I apologise if that's wrong it's a long time since I've done any research into Pirate Lore.

You could use that (Example Below):
...You are apprenticed to a famous (abiet slightly incompetent)pirate captain, you board his ship and find you are just in time for a demonstation of his famous technique for scaring soldiers and merchants. After a brief introduction to the rest of the pirates who are presently in port for a trade and career conference he pulls out a match and sets alight his beard. Unfortunately the captain has recently been eating greasy food and his entire beard catches alight. At this point he begins frantically running over the ship attempting to extinguish it but to no avail. You have to then extinguish the fire in his beard through some sort of puzzle probably involving physics. Maybe by using a convinently located nearby crane you have to knock the captain into the water with it's attached crate of bananas, by waiting till he enters the path that the crane swings across.

On a LucasArts fan-site I got to, a lot of people have created fan games, comics, radio shows etc. based completely on one of the games, with characters using the same names and same locations. None of those people were told to stop by LucasArts.

Oh, and if you want a load of monkey island fans to discuss the mod with, visit this: http://www.lucasforums.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=142

I'm surprised that LucasArts hasn't stopped anyone from their illegal copyright infringements yet.. I don't doubt that there is no way these mods can succeed, unless you somehow managed to crank out a proper game secretly then spread it around illegally, because the main website would be shut down.
