A Scanner Darkly

Wow, I love the look of the movie.

You've got my attention... I'll be keeping my eye on this one.

Ooo Richard Linklater. Good director and screenwriter. Looks like its in a good hands.

Geez, I thought this would be on dvd already! That teaser came out so long ago
Anyway, looks pretty interesting, I really need to read some Dick

is animated or what?
looks cool

Looks like it's animated and live action... although they probably just used some fancy photoshopping technique to make it all cartoony-like.

Either way it looks really good.

yeah, btw can someone post the storyline please?
also is a independent movie?cuz in the begining it say "Warner independient films" or something like that

Its about an undercover cop around 2013 in America where we've lost the war on drugs. Now, the cop goes undercover with a bunch of druggies. He takes a drug called "Substance D" a few times and eventually his brain hemispheres start acting independently, causing his view of reality to distort and who he really is, Bob the drug dealer or Fred, police officer. I've read the book so I won't spoil anymore ;).

If you've ever seen Linklater's other film, Waking Life, the live action/animation was used the same way. Looks better in A Scanner Darkly though.

And yes, I do believe this will be an independent film. George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh are executive producers.

They use a technique known as rotoscoping, where artists draw over frames of real-life footage. The technique has been around for ages. It's never been used to this extent though. It's quite distracting to be honest.Hopefully the movies plot will turn out be good.

Loved the book, NEED To see the movie, i should read it again just to get pumped up!!

Whooaah that looks awesome. I <3 Woody Harrelson.

Whooooooooooooah.

That must have taken a long time.

Perchance, does anyone know the song that starts midway into the trailer?

The song is "Teen Angst" by M83, off the amazing Before The Dawn Heals Us album. Pick it uuuuuuuup

I saw this on another site. Looks like an awesome movie. I can't wait for this one.

Much thanks.

"Distracting?" I'm not completely sure how you could say the main characteristic that will make this movie is "distracting." What exactly is it distracting you from? And how would you propose they film this movie without these particular effects? Seems as if the medium to create this movie was the roots and main focus of the overall mission behind it.

I think it looks f*cking awesome. I'm just hoping that they didn't spend all their money on the rotoscoping and forgot about making a plot that wasn't awfully oversimplified and terrible. And Keanu, don't f*ck this up. :|

Excellent novel written by Philip K. Dick; published in 1977. So far, judging by the trailer, the movies seems like it stays true to the book very closely. While the trailer notes that this movie takes place "seven years from now," the novel originally takes place in the early nineties. I don't think that will matter though as the plot of the story could take place at any time from then on.

Despite the fact that Keanu Reeves takes the lead in Robert "Bob" Arctor/Fred, I have a feeling he's going to do alright in this one. I think playing a drug addict will serve him well. The interpolated-rotoscoping visual style looks amazing and I'm looking forward to seeing the whole feature at the theater this summer. I can't wait, actually.

Here's some more about the storyline (from the back cover of one version of Dick's novel): "Cops and criminals have always been interdependent, but no novel has explored that symbiosis more powerfully than A Scanner Darkly. Bob Arctor is a dealer of the leathally addictive drug called Substance D. Fred is the police agent assigned to tail and eventually bust him. To do so, he has taken on the identity of a drug dealer named Bob Arctor. And since Substance D - which Arctor takes in mammoth doses - gradually splits the user's brain into two distinct, combatitve entities, Fred doesn't realize that he is narcing on himself."

If the film is half as good as the novel, then I believe that this one will treat us very well.

July 7th (I think thats the release date) can't come soon enough.

Visit http://wip.warnerbros.com/ascannerdarkly/ for more. I think the website just launched.

revived because i actually search before i make a new topic!

release is imminent. i finished reading the novel a few hours ago (hell, now i'm part of that leet purist crowd, just in time too).

i'm terribly excited for the movie, i love linklater's other work (he wrote and directed A Scanner Darkly as well as his previous movies including Waking Life, Slackers, and Dazed and Confused).

i also love Phillip K. Dick and one of my favorite movies (look at my avatar), Blade Runner, is also based on a novel of his.

Currently on a Dick reading kick, took eight of his novels out from the library and I'm tearing through them in rapid succession :)

I just saw Robert Downey Jr on David Letterman talking about this. Finally it's about to be released. Although, I heard it'll be up against Pirates of the Caribbean.

I've only read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (Blade Runner) by PKD, and I'm trying not to read this one before I see the movie, although I do own it.

P.S. Robert Downey Jr's wife is hawt.

A Scanner Darkly is an independent flick, I doubt it'll make much money in the box office, but it'll make up for it overseas. Goddamn American philistines...

Anyway, I can't wait to see this. Love Dick's work and Linklater's.

hah. hopefully A Scanner Darkly will be more accessible and less distracting / tedious than Waking Life. Waking Life had rough rotoscoping, whereas A Scanner Darkly's looks to be much tighter and more real-feeling. Although I love Waking Life, it lacks plot and is mostly just a series of ideas communicated in romantically fantastic ways. A Scanner Darkly looks conventional enough to be entertaining and engaging, but unique and individual enough to still retain independent film status. Another cult film, I'm willing to bet, and one I'll gladly follow, if it turns out to be as good as I expect, from Dick and Linklater.

Bleh, Waking Life. Not a huge fan am I. Looking forward to this one though.

Opens July 14th here.

I'll be watching it opening day, methinks. Which is weird, because I usually don't bother with that.

looks good ..one of the few Dick books I havent read. ALthough it adds to the overall style i find the rotoscoping a bit distracting ..I mean in Waking life the artwork had a purpose as it conveyed emotion ..in scanner darkly it's more of a gimmick (highly effective one) or just another medium ..but because the medium is so new the medium itself becomes the main attraction. Linklater has pretty much cornered the market in this technique but it's starting to hit the mainstream and hopefully other artisits will take it a step further (I like the particular style they chose ..almost like a syd mead painting come to life)

traditional rotoscoping was only rarely used ..anyone see the Hobbit the battle scenes were rotoscoped, this isnt the same as it's digital rotoscoping ..the other technique involved handpainting cells

Well, its been some time since i read the book, but from what i do remember much of the book focuses on the main character's dettachment from reality, purhaps this medium will affectively convey that particular emotion.

.....or it could be a major gimmick, im just throwing out ideas here.
Must read again,*runs to library*

probably a combination of the two.. a bit gimmicky, but it also aids the conveyance of the confusion and uncertainty Arctor feels.

also i doubt the library will have it, mine was all out of copies, its coming out in a few weeks :p

Is there an offical date? Ill likely be buying it then.

dates are weird, its incremental. check out the site for more.

and buy the book. i did, it was worth it.

Four TV Spots (click 'Surveillance', then 'You're Being Set Up')

My most anticipated movie of the year is just around the corner. I simply love the stylistic visuals this film uses.
