A slackers review of D3

that was one of the best reviews ever made

"Totally awesome. Thanks, dude. Oh, hey, what prizes do we get?"

"I think it's just a T-shirt."

"A Doom 3 shirt? That's awesome."

"Are you going to be this excited about Half-Life 2?" I asked him as we headed for the door.

"Fcuk Half-Life 2."

hehe ...D3 fanboys

that's a great line

that was seriously the one of the greatest reviews i've ever read for doom3, the last page just pretty much expressed everysingle one of my opinions of the game, it has an unbelievably great first impression but doesn't do much in the ways of surprise to keep it interesting, btw stern; have you played d3 yet, if so what did you think about it?

havent played it yet ...I dont know, I'm not exactly sold on the game yet ...awesome graphics aside it doesnt look like it has all that much to offer me. I'll wait for the demo.
After seeing everything that's promised in a game like HL2, I just cant get excited over any game that offers so little in terms of gameplay innovation. It kills me to spend $69 on a game that'll only be played once.

i can't say i'd reccomend anyone buying the game right now at this price, may be when it goes down to 30 it's worth buying, but gameplay wise i really doesn't seperate itself from serious sam or painkiller, which is a pretty big dissapointment for me, especially since in my humble op, serious sam pulls off the old school doom type of gameplay better than doom3

I think it is worth every penny if you can let yourself get lost in the game. If you can't (because you think listening to voice recordings is stupid) don't buy the game. If you take the time to listen to all the plot, backstory and UAC propaganda, Doom 3 is amazing. If you don't its an above average shooter.

hehe that's what the reviewers said as well :)

hehe I like this line:

"So what did your review say?"

"I'll read you the last line. 'Although it's built from an impressive engine, Doom 3 is ultimately a soulless derivative rehash of tired, tried, and true motifs. It is a bauble that reminds us of id's triumph when it comes to technology and their abject failure when it comes to imagination.'"

"Harsh. But really, it all comes down to what you'd give it out of ten."

"I'm not going there. Want to play a round of Mario Golf? I'll give you six mulligans since I've been practicing."

"Yeah, let's do it. I call Princess Peach. Well, I think I've learned my lesson. I just wish Half-Life 2 would hurry up and come out."

Hehe, Tom Chick is a funny writer. Not the nrightest or most analytical guy, but good enough. Sometimes I wonder whether 'Trevor' is just his alternate personality. :rolling:

That one guy did exactly that and still thought it wasn't that great. And he was a doom3 fan! Care to explain?

EDIT: I'd also like to add that I did that as well and still didn't think it was that good.

People have different tastes. I am enjoying Doom 3 very much, and I feel it's a very immersive game. I'm sure I will be getting my moneys worth, especially when conversion mods begin to surface, along with the co-op mod.

It would seem like if you actually were able to finish the game in a day or two, you would get bored with it...

Yeah, there's not much replay value to it. The only reason I went back to play after I beat it was to see what happens differently when you don't send the transmission. That pissed me off because nothing was really different if you did or didn't send it.

Next time someone asks me about doom 3 i am going to send them that article.

Summed it up great!

"Okay, maybe it's a good game. But just barely. I could think of ten other PC games this year that are way better than Doom 3. It's overlong, repetitive, derivative, uninspired. It's full of ****ing monster closets, for Christ's sake. Monster closets! There's a monster just sitting in a closet that won't open until you walk past it. What's up with that?"

Haha, that last bit about monster closets is probably the worst part of Doom3 - surely after all these years they could come up with something less stupid to deliver the monsters to the scene.

I still love DoomIII to bits though.

It was long, but entertaining. It described exactly how I feel about Doom3 too except I was reluctant to post it around here because I wanted to give it more of a chance to feel it was worth my $60.. Comon VALVe hurry up please ):

Funny review. Spoiled the boss of the game for me though ;(

Thank god I stopped reading then. I thought it was getting a bit too spoilerish on page three so stopped.

Glad I did.

yeah that's pretty much what I think of the game.

well said, ID have crafted a masterpiece with Doom3.
cant wait to see some MP mods (then again Im not touching MP until I finish the game)

I just find it hard to call D3 a "masterpiece" - as it just isn't one. From a technical point of view, indeed. I agree.

However, if a game is to be called a true "masterpiece", it HAS to be innovative in gameplay too. Like Zelda: OOT, it was graphically and gameplay wise SUPERB - now that is a masterpiece.

D3 is amazing, it's definately an above average shooter, and a masterpiece in technical wizardy. BUT it is NOT a gaming masterpiece, it's a long shot from there.

I agree, DooM 3 shouldn't be called a masterpiece. It is a good game sure, but to be a masterpiece it really has to stand out from the genre in terms of design and innovation.

The original DooM was a masterpiece because it revolutionised the genre. Half-Life was a masterpiece because it showed that you didn't have to have cut-scenes and give the character a voice in order to make a successful game.

Did you read my mind?? I mean Zelda: OOT is a game that has the same magic and freshness to it no matter if you're playing it for the first or 10 time (7th time for me). Whereas I can't even bring myself to play Doom 3 for a second time and am already contemplaiting of selling it to my frind for $40 (Canadian) before he gets wind of the reviews.

While i haven't played the game (i'm waiting for the demo, like admiral Stern), from what people have said Doom 3 is sounding like what Far Cry was for me, quite unimpressive when it gets down to the nitty gritty i.e. gameplay. I don't really want to be stung for another £30 for a game that I play once and then consign to the cupboard.

Anyway, i'll wait for the demo and then make a decision on that (a price cut would make it more attractive :p)

Take it from someone like me.. I was anticipating FarCry more than HL2 when it came out. I got it immediately, and never felt inspired to finish it. FC got EXTREMELY repetitive, as there are maybe 5 different enemies you fight through the entire game. Plus, you're limited to 4 weapons, it just gets SO boring.

Me playing on realistic and having to literally crawl through the entire game didn't help me enjoy it anymore, but I gave up at "River." Which was, what, 6 levels before the end of the game? I've since restarted on Normal, but haven't gotten past the second level (snooze fest for me now..). :|

Anyhow, D3 feels like a gift sent from God compared to FarCry (for me, anyway). I'm over half way through D3, and not bored in the slightest.

I agree, once then trigens showed up in Far Cry on realistic, I just didn't have the motivation to finish it. I didn't like the weapon or enemy variety either. Doom 3 has so much more to it than many people are making it out to be. A lot of what gets people down about it is what others say, but you have to go by your own personal preferences and not be swayed to the opinions of others. I've been playing Doom 3 little by little, taking breaks here and there for other things, and the game has been a blast for me so far. I'm glad id has decided to stay true to the formula that made Doom special, and they've added a few things here and there. They've been saying all along the Doom 3 is a remake of the origional, so I don't know why some people were expecting something completely innovative. All in all, I feel it's a great game that really shows off the hard work that went into the game's engine. There's nothing more immersive than sifting through the darkness, trying to locate enemies while lab machinery whirs around you.

But why would you make a remake of a game that's already out (even if it is old). I mean, if you wanted to play doom 1, then play doom 1! Not wait for the company to make it again with fancier graphics and dated gameplay. That's like saying Half-life 3 is going to be a remake of the 1st half-life. If it was, I'd snap (yes i'm aware of hl:source, that's different).

I agree. I also got bored and stopped playing FarCry at the River. :)

Doom 3 is awesome. It's a lot better than I expected it to be. I hope HL2 is this fun or better when/if it comes out. :afro:

this review summed it up for me as well.
bought into the initial hype, but was ultimately disappointed in the end.
I still thought it was a great game though. just fell short in some areas.
