My brother is looking to upgrade from his 2500+ to a 3000+ 64, but I couldn't find out whether his mobo or CPU was socket 754. His mobo is a Gigabye GA-7N400, and his CPU, obviously, is a 2500+. I looked online at AMD and Gigabyte's site for info, but according to Gigabyte, that mobo is Socket-A....? Anyone want to help?

Bartons and 64's use different sockets. Barton uses soocket A while the 64 uses 754/939. If he wants to upgrade he is going to need to upgrade his motherboard as well...

If you dont want to upgrade mobo etc has your brother tried overclocking his cpu? Some people have reported getting 3200+ speeds.

Oh, too bad.....hmm....we haven't tried OCing yet, because for a while his PC kept overheating, but now after we've dusted out his PC, it hasn't happened, so maybe we'll try it. He really doesn't want to buy many things, so I suppose we'll go for OCing first. Right now, his rig is as follows:

AMD XP 2500+
Gigabyte GA-7N400
ATI Radeon 9800 pro 128mb
512mb x 2 Corsair Pro

Those are the main things. Nothing is overclocked, so maybe we'll try overclocking his processor. I know he really doesn't feel like buying a whole new mobo AND processor.

I think his CPU is holding his 9800 back. In 3dMark '03 he scored somewhere between 2000-3000. >< So I really think it's his CPU.

i can overclock my 2500+ to 3200 no problem on stock heatsink and no thermal paste. but i dont have pc3200 ram so i run it at 3000+

That 3d mark score is way too low and his cpu is not holding the 9800 back too much, It should be about 5500. Has he installed his motherboard drivers for agp?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure all of his drivers are updated, but I'll make sure tomorrow. I know it's way too low, so I'm a little worried. All of his hardware works fine.....except, sometimes when he plays newer games I think his PC overheats and his system shuts down.

That doesnt seem right. Are you sure it is all dust free, virus free and adware free? This can slow down your computer and cause shut downs etc. Make sure there is decent ventilation as well.

reformat and reinstall everything, could just be time for a fresh install

You know my friend got an X800 pro a while ago, I told him to get 3DMark03, he only scored like 4000, that's not right. He has a 3.0ghz P4.

It is a 9800 Pro with 256 bit memory bus and not 128, right?

Anyway those are some pretty respectable specs. What sorts of temperatures are you seeing? If you don't know, get Motherboard Monitor 5.

By the way, does anyone know a good alternative to MBM? I haven't bothered to look around since the guy announced he was abandoning it...
