AA and FF

Hey I was wondering what is AA and FF in games? what are there importance? do they drop FPS? will they be in HL2? thanks a lot

AA is anti aliasing...this removes the jagged edges that you see around textures in the game. This takes a big hit to a video card's memory, so if you want to use it and still use high details in the game, its good to have a real nice video card.

AF is Anisotropic Filtering - Makes textures display correctly at angles other than directly facing the player's view... rather than making them blurry.

FF is Friendly Fire (though I doubt you meant FF) - When you hurt/kill someone on your team.

Thanks for clearing that up. Always wondered what AF was; I'd seen it mentioned on here quite a bit. I'll have to try that with a game sometime...is that a feature that games have, or can you tweak your card's settings to run under AF?

AA: makes jaded line smoother by bluring a bit
AF: make textures clearer on odd angles and distances

they do slow down a lot.
you put it on yourself in your display options

AF is a card setting, but games can have a preferred AF setting for the card to run under...

Anyone else here envision like five pages worth of display options for Half-Life 2? I got to thinking...and it hurt for a bit...and then I realized that Half-Life 2 has a HUGE amount of different graphical features. It'll probably be a tad bigger than your average PC game's video settings.

That was a great way to show us...thanks. And a good game to use for the screenshots at that!

They should have a really advanced menu where you turn on/off individual features and a simpler one with maybe 5 (10 max) sliders that set the amount of graphical detail in different categories (like lighting, textures, shaders, etc).

EoD for BF1942. I was a coder for them a while... Made the Huey flight physics, and a few smaller things. I was the one that suggested to use tracers on all rifles, it really hightened the combat sense. But the grass only reached concept stage back then. The drain on anything below a G4 was quite bad :)
(the highest LOD was like 6000 polys or so for a patch of about 4x4m)

lol, i just went to take some bigger screenshots in the HL engin to demonstrait then i realised my 9700pros broken and my 7200 can only go up to 4xAA and 0xAF :p

I miss you 9700, i hope gigabyte send you back soon ;( ;( ;(

I could take some comparison image of HL... Well, maybe, I'm tired, I'll see if I can find a nice spot to grab :)
