when they mean preloading on august 5th whats that mean by preloading i dont exactly know if i get it. and we start playing it august 10th.

It means the majority of the game will be loaded onto people's computers. This data will not be playable until VALVe unlocks it on the 10th

thanks thats what i thought but just wasnt sure. thanks

what i wanna know is, once the beta ends 2 weeks in, how do valve stop us from playing it? If the files are on our computers - can't we still play them? Or do they just shut down all the servers, but even then i s'pose we can load up dust or summet to mess about on.

Preloading, is basically seeing the ICON on your steam games list under section "Coming Soon" So on august 5th, the cs:s beta icon will be there. You click on it the 5th and it will download the game. But it will be locked up and encoded. Then you can start playing the game on the 10th

No, Steam will re-encode them or when you try to play it, it will say, Sorry this beta is not longer avalible even if you still have the files. Because you NEED steam to run the game, and steam will tell you, "Nope, no can do"

Even if you ran it off-line mode for the last few days? lol, sorry I'm desperate to give it a test seeing as I'm going to miss it :frown:

Put the drink down and walk away slowly, Majestic....

does anyone else think that sucks? would it hurt valve at all to let us keep playing the beta until half life 2 is released?

the whole point of the beta is to iron out bugs and make sure everything is ready for release, as well as get feedback from the public. So once they have got all the bugs located and got lots of feedback, valve will not benifit from letting us play it anymore.

and many CS players only play one map anyway- so a lot of people would just play it untill they get bored / forever. So if they let the beta go on for ever (or even just for a long period of time) it would discourage people from buying it, as they would have either got bored with the scource engine or just want to play the beta instead of the game. by cutting the beta off, valve are effectively luring us into buying it, as a week befoire HL2 is released people may start to think "i got bored of the beta after a while, but i kinda want to play it again. so i know! ill buy HL2"!!!

but anyone who owns CS:CZ / has a cybercafe account / has a HL2 voucher would probally buy HL2 anyway... especially if they had a voucher... but still :)

is it gonna rre load tfor everty ine on e the 5 ?
a little early in the day to be drunk aint it buddy?

"is it gonna preload for everyone on the 5th"

is what he said. i have experience in typing while drunk/high

according to one of those valve guys yeah but the cybercafe people will have it first...but i doubt it. i think everyone will have it at the same time.

And play by yourself?

YES! BY MYSELF! hehe, i just really wanna see how my computer will handle the source engine mainly, although I'd expect HL2 to be more of a strain on our systems

well of course they aren't benefiting themselves by letting us play the beta longer than 2 weeks, they would just be doing a nice thing for their customers. most people are going to buy half life 2 for half life 2, not for counterstrike. therefore whether they get bored of beta or not probably won't affect whether they buy half life 2 or not. besides, the beta is going out to people that have half life 2 vouchers (they won't be paying for the game anyway so it won't affect sales whether they get tired of the beta or not) and to people who have condition zero (mostly people that have played counter strike for a long time, therefore not likely to get bored of CS:S after only 2 months of playing it.
EDIT: and i never said let people play beta forever, i said leave the beta running until half life 2 comes out

yes, but as we have allready noticed by the fact that this beta was restricted to CZ owners rather than being an open beta, money comes before customers, and valve want the game to sell :) and what makes you think you, or anyone else, deserve to play the CS:S beta anyway? dont you think its nice of valve to make a (practically) open beta in the first place? name any other FPS that has had an open beta... its a privilledge to play this game early anyway, so be grateful :)

if you read my post again, you;ll notice i provided a counter argument on this allready.

hope this answers your questions, and remain grateful ;)

i never said i deserve to play beta, i know i don't deserve it. that's why i said THEY WOULD BE DOING SOMETHING NICE FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS IF THEY DID IT. and no, i don't think it's nice for valve to make a beta. they are making the beta to benefit themselves, if they DIDNT make a beta, it would be really stupid of them and give themselves more work because THEY would have to do the work instead of the beta testers. anyway i dunno how i missed reading your last sentence, sorry.

What's the deal with preloading anyway? Sorry if this is common knowledge but I'm not that experienced with steam.

Is the user going to be prompted to accept entry into the beta and confirm that they'd like to preload the data? It strikes me as being a bit off if it'll just start doing it off of it's own back without even informing you. Your average CZ owner probably won't know anything about it or maybe for whatever reason not want it. Is their bandwidth going to be sapped until they've DLed 300mb regardless?

Don't get me wrong, I can't wait, but, I can just imagine thousands of random CZ owners with the steam tray loading at startup slowing to a crawl and busting their lame BT monthly bandwidth limits without knowing what's going on

Wont u be able to see that while playing with other people?

Now, this is possible....

I thought it was gonna pre-load for cafe's today?
Dunno, a usual steam update should come out soon. its wednesday!

NO the complete cache is downloaded on ur pc.Then after u get like a .00000000001111 millibyte file to unlock it while still having the ability to pause it.

wow what kinda shitty internet providers do you guys have where theres montly bandwidth caps? man im glad i dont live there. i would kill someone if i had to pay 45.95 a month for cable and then i only get say 2 gigabytes a month worth of downloading. lol man the blood would surely run.

just make 2 copy of steam on your computer X:\steam and X:\program files\steam

use one for offline and one for online, eg, the X:\program file\steam use for online, and use X:\steam go offline everytime (assuming you have set that steam for offline exited steam proberly to let it give you the choice) and select offline mode, and play cs:source offline on that, cuz thats what im going to do, + that will work good as :D

im actually looking forward to cs:s almost as much as hl2! ive got my ati voucher, and even if i didnt i would buy it anyway, so from my point of view the longer the beta the better because im paying for it anyway. although i can see where your argument comes from about people maybe not buying cs:s once theyve played the beta. valve is after all a business, and so naturaly they want to sell as much of their product as possible. i could fully understand them making only a short beta.
