I've got a problem. Inform me please:
I have a original Half-Life 2 (5 cd version) and original episode 1 dvd. But i've lost my account and cannot play them after format.. One of my friend is selling his clean orange box account (not discs, only account). If I buy this account from him, can I use it with my original discs? Do account accept this? Or are my discs are disabled?
Thanks...

If you buy his account, you can just download the games through Steam without bothering with the discs...

Get your account back?

You registered the games you bought to that account, right?

Surely you can email Valve or something your CD keys and they can find your account details for you...

I know that but my internet has download limit. I can't download them while I have their discs. So I wanna use my own discs. I'm asking is this possible?

I've emailed already but never recieved any message from them. But no problem, my friend is selling his account very cheap price. But if I buy this account can I use my own Half-Life 2 and EP1 discs for install and play?

Is important how do I install this games?

You shouldn't use(buy) accounts that you haven't created. It's against Steam Subscriber Agreement.

If you say so.. OK but If I buy an unused new orange box, can i install my games from my 5 discs HL2 and old ep1 disc by it's unused activation code?

(I really dont want to use orange box, I hate packages and I searched everywhere to find and buy that 5 discs HL2 for many years.)

Just create a Steam account and buy the Orange Box, which is a really great offer.

You are getting confused tez. You have those 5 CDs but they are completely worthless to you. You can't use them for anything. Those CDs came with a CD key which you registered to a 'Steam Account', meaning your games are on this account.

If you can get back into that specific account you can install those games with your CDs. Thats all they can be used for.

If your friend gives you his account, when you log in with an username and password the games he has are available to download through Steam using your internet, you don't need any CDs / DVDs. How much do you trust this friend, just in case friend = ebay, people on ebay always scam selling fake information or already used CD keys.

To finalise, you are better off trying to get your old account back. If you can remember the email you used to use for that account, you can use it to reset the password. If you don't have the email you must go through Steam support.

When you contacted them I bet you didn't use the correct channels.

Thank you Hectic Glenn for detailed info, I understand :( Other activation codes doesn't work with my HL2 CD's. So buying a orange box for it's activation code is nonsense..

I want to ask another way:
I can install HL2 with my CD's now, you know. I can see it on my Steam installed games list. If I select HL2 and click "Purchase", I thing I can use that CD's by this way? Isn't this a Steam feature? (Installing game by any method, but can be playing by only when purchased)

Is this possible?...

Edit: please look here for example:

Incorrect. The discs themselves aren't linked to the cd keys, so you can install them, and then when you open up your account, as seen in the screenshot you posted, they will show up as 'Pre-load complete'. If you now went and bought the Orange Box on Steam, your games would be playable, as you have tied a new cd key to your account, and Half Life 2 is installed.

Very nice, I'm waiting to get this answer since the first post of this thread..
Interesting, but in my country, Orange Box (box edition / with dvds) is cheaper than buying on Steam. So buying OB from shops is more reasonable than buying from Steam for me. I'm trying to learn this. If I buy OB from shops, after throw it's dvds to garbage, can I use it's cd-key for my HL2 CD version? Games on my list (screenshot on previous post) can be playable too???
Or must I buy by Steam to use my CD version? Any difference???

There's no difference, no. Just wondering, though, why throw away the Orange Box DVD? It would work to install all the games on the OB (Portal, TF2, Half Life 2 and Episode 1 and 2) from the DVD, then activate them on your Steam account. You don't have to keep your cds. Also, you mentioned you have poor internet - the version from your cds will be older, and as a result you will have to download more updates.

Thank you very much KineticAesthetic.. Yes I should explain:
I was searching everywhere to find HL2 CD version (only personal wish). Finally I've found and bought immediately. Later, Ep1 released and bought it too (i didn't search its cd version, because there isn't, i know). I'm trying to collect the serie step by step. I've HL1, OF, BS too like this principle. And want to do that for HL2 series. I don't like packages :) And so Orange Box dvds are worthless for me. I'll buy it for only activate my standalone versions of HL2, EP1 and others. I hope I could told my opinion.
Thank you again...

One more thing please.. Can you help me to activate my HL2 CD version after buying OB (box edition from shops) please KineticAesthetic?...

Its not that hard. You put the CD in then go down to activate a product on Steam and there you put the CD key in and after that it should start downloading.

But I'll not download games, I'll install them from their own CD/DVD's...

When I push EP1's disc into driver before installation starting, it asks CD key. After I use that OB key to activate my HL2 (CD Vers.), can I write the same code to EP1's installation screen? Or after HL2 (CD Vers.) activation, will not I see CDkey asking screen in EP1 installation?...

If the account already had Episode 1 and HL2 registered then it will not ask you for the key when you install. As long as the account owns the game then it doesn't matter what disc you use. If you buy the Orange Box account off your friend then you will be able to use your retail disc to install.

Thank you very much PimpinPenguin for info. After I buy OB and complete this headache I'll thank all of you one by one  ...

This is way more complicated than it needs to be, its pretty silly.

You can still use the discs to install. The CDs are not tied to an account.
