How will Radeon 9600 XT perform compared to Radeon 9800 PRO?

And how will Radeon 9800 XT perform compared to Radeon 9800 PRO?

9600 XT == 9800 or 9700 Pro.
9800 XT == 5-20% faster than 9800 Pro.

The 9600 XT still doesnt touch the 9800 PRO.. however it's performance is nearly unmatched by it's FX nemesis. I think the 9600 XT will be one of the best selling cards this season.

Yeah, I'm definately getting the 9600 XT. 500 MHZ core, baby. It has more juice than a 5600 Ultra, not to mention better drivers, overclocking potentional, and better DirectX9 support. In other words, Ati is my video card god.

So actually there are no difference in 9600XT's and 9800PRO's performance?

Well, yeah. the 9600 Xt is still a tad bit slower than the 9800 Pro, but not by much. Like, 8 FPS slower. Which wont really matter at 40-60 FPS on MAX details.

Note that I said 9800. Not 9800 Pro.

I just don't know what to buy...

I've got a Ti4200 and I've planned to update a long time but waited in case of a HL2 delay, and now there are the new XT cards bundled with Half Life 2. I definetly want a Radeon, but I can't figure out which is the best buy, either in performance or price... or both... What should I upgrade to in order to get the best possible performance to the best price?

It'll be a fair bit slower....... still a good card though. Its on par with the 9700 pro.

Yeah, in most tests the 9700 Pro was behind the 9800Pro by 5-8FPS.

How many pixel shader pipelines does the 9600xt have? I'd say most of the time that's going to be more important than clock speed in dx9 games.
I'm no expert but I thought the 9600pro had 4 and the 9800pro had 8?

Yep, and the XT will probably remain the same (obviously, otherwise the high clocked 9600XT could easily outperform the 9800XT by 30%). The 9600XT is so fast due to its very high core clock. True, it lacks finesse, and will probably fall behind the 9800XT by quite alot at high resolutions at high FSAA in high density/quality scenes. But for a medium range card at medium to high settings it should be great.

The 9600 XT is not on par with the 9800 pro.
Remember that the 9800 Pro has more hardware features, including more pipelines etc. I`ve seen benchmarks, and even the 9800 XT (clocked at 415MHz core) is only slightly better than 9800 Pro (128MB) in games. Not even noticable if you were playing with one then play with the other.
The smarter thing would be if you can get a 9800 Pro cheap now and just buy half life 2 on pre order. You will probably save quite a bit of money.
In my opinion, although the XT will be a great card, its just another money making scheme by ATI and Valve that is sure to get a fortune.
They have essentually just taken the fan off the 9800 pro, made it look better and run according to clock speeds, add a copper plate to the back, and givea guaranteed warranty to clock the card up to a certain degree.
I`m sticking with my 9800 Pro, the difference to upgrade would be marginal performance, at a ludicris price loss....
