...cuz the stats have gone down not up, contrary to what all the jack thompsons of this world have been screaming about for the last little while:

"There is no epidemic of youth violence in America.

The whole concept is a lie manufactured, distributed and perpetuated by the media. Kids are not killing each other more frequently than they used to. In fact, it turns out the opposite is true.

Check out that ugly graph on the right. It doesn't take a genius to conclude that violent crime is at the lowest it has been in a good thirty years. For effect, I’ve also marked the release of the Playstation console, the first Grand Theft Auto game, the PS2 console, and the infamous GTA 3. Wow, look at those surges in violence! "

very interesting article ..he rips thompsons arguments to shreds

...should I send that link to Jack? I think I will.

good find Absinthe ..true too ...I absolutely never mention gaming to anyone on the "outside" ...people tend to give you strange looks ..the funny thing is that fathers of young kids play video games all the time ...they just never admit it ..my wife's cousin's husband surprised me when he showed me his huge playstation library ...funny thing is that the majority of his games werent appropriate for his kids

The people that don't admit it are the more irritating ones IMO. Every one of my friends plays games, some more heavily than others. But the moment I begin discussing a game with one of my friends (an oft-discussed topic between us two) we're told to stop acting like geeks. Guys roll their eyes. Girls give us awkward looks and make silent jokes to each other. I seethe.

The only time they ever drop their stigma is if I yank them by their ears in front of some statistics or article that shows how gaming is not a juvenile hobby deserving of social scorn.

Last I checked, three of the bastards bought Doom 3. Who are they to judge? :\

people believe what they want to believe ...in the last month or so I cant tell you the number of times I've heard a non-gamer say something like "ya but games should be censored because they make kids violent"

"ya but games should be censored because they make kids violent"

I hate it when people dress up idle speculation as fact. They even believe it to be a fact in their mind, because that's what the Daily Mail told them to think.

Saw that website before, did you check out if the Justice Statistics add up as per that graph? If it is true, that is cool, send it out to every man, woman and senator.

Yep, you can see each of those graphs on the Department of Justice website linked in that article...

If you really tried hard enough you can link new releases of the bible to increases in violence. Or any book, really - co-incidence can be used to prove many points.

the way i see it is, games dont **** up teens, the teens are already ****ed up to begin with. they use the game as a scapegoat when they get into trouble.

PEACE

Ahhh, typical.

Media-manufactured "crisis" and hysteria, so they can push to clamp down on video-games, music, guns, boards-with-a-nail-in-it..._______(fill in the blank, ect.)

There's is always a "crisis" and a knee-jerk agenda that follows to "solve" the "problem".

We had a long talk last night about whether the time he spends alone in front of a screen playing games is emotionally healthy. I tried to explain the concept of moral bankruptcy, about how sometimes when I waste time I end up feeling empty rather than full. I’m not sure the conversation will change his habits but it will change mine. Too often I’ve been taking the lazy way out and curling up with a book, but after dinner tonight I’ll invite both my kids to turn off the TV, log-off the internet and play cards or dominoes instead. Who knows, maybe we’ll talk too!

HOW FUN!!! Dominoes! Some parents just don't understand their kids at all. Instead of actually listening to why the child enjoys the game, they just try and prise them away from it. That's not how you develop a realtionship with your child :| How does she excpect him to want to play her game (Dominoes) When she doesn't even give a shit why he enjoys his?

Great read.

I like his point "violent kids are attracted to violent video games", so if they commit a crime right after playing a game of GTAIII, the media finds his PS2 and claims it as the murder weapon

i wonder if the goverment realizes how much it will lose on sales tax if they try to get rid of video games the gaming industry is probobly close to a multi billion dollar industry

WTF kind of shit is that? Who the hell plays cards/dominoes together? My grandparents make me play cards, and they are 80 years old. Watch a ****ing movie you bitch. And how is that any different from watching TV? Atleast TV can be educational, and you learn more about culture and vocabulary.

Yeah, I bet he'd take note an' all. Worth doing though.

...and as for that moral bankruptcy bollocks - as you put, Stern, there's many more shocking things one can do than destroy some simulated badguys. I really wish people would look at the person you are rather than the passtime you engage in.

Unless, of course, your chosen passtime is - let's say - necrophilia, in which case yes, yes it IS ok to judge someone.

awesome article Stern. Maybe I'm more violent since I don't own a ps2.
