I'm not sure how to add another hardrive that does have information on it... My current hardrive has windows and everything i want on it, but the one that i want to add is full of stuff, i mostly want to clear it and use it to store music and other files... can anyone help me with how to do this procedure?

Thanks,

if it ide jsut plug it in and it shoudl show up as another dirve if it sata you will have to load the dirvers for it whihc may requir reinstalling windows but i doubt it

Once you installe dit jsut format it using computer management in administrative tools or some third party software if you have any

Ok, it's ide, but i'm not sure if it has any viruses on it, i just don't want them to transfer to my hdd that im using now... Will they if i just plug in my drive?

the virus wont have been executed so you should be ok. Just dont run any programs that are on the second hard drive that you tihnk may be dubios, and for god sakes update your virus definitions if u havent.

And get mcaffe virus software if you dont have any antivirus what so ever u silly person :p

It's called "Anti-Virus Software"

Use it.

So i take it they will if i don't have antivirus software, even if im not going to move anything from that hardrive to my current harddrive...? Im just going to plug it in then erase it.

If you're just going to plug it in and erase it, then go for it, you won't get infected. Just make sure you don't access any files on that harddrive. :)

ok

1 open case put in hdd make sure ide calbe is the rgiht way up plug in yadda yadda

2 boot up windows and go

3 start> settings > control panel > administrative tools > computer management

4 go to storage and go to the sub section call DISK MANAGEMENT

5 Select the drive you just put in and format it

6 make sure the file system is ntfs and NOT FAT32,16

7 leave it formatting

8 Job done

if there is anything else ppl can think to add to this please say!

Or, after you've installed, click "My computer", right click on hard drive, and click format.
Select the file system you want, and then click format.
I actually just formatted a partition to FAT32, because Linux can both read and write to it.

What was the drive used for before? Has anyone mentioned you'll need to change the jumpers if it used to be a master drive, aswell as take a peak in fdisk incase it doesn't run the first time, it might be setup as a master and conflicting with the drive you have in right now (thats only possible if it used to be setup as the C drive before) if it was always just a second drive it wont be aproblem. Just thought it should be mentioned, besides I'd use fdisk anyway on it so you can setup partitions to better suit what you plan for it, maybe have one as a backup partition just incase. Use it for storing zipped up files ready for backup to disks.

The hardrive that i was installing was a master, what do i need to do to make it a slave?

*bump*, i really wanted to get this done, tonight so any help would be excellent.

Between the power plug and the ide plug there should be a set of other pins, some with jumpers on them.
You have to find a guide to tell which to change to make it slave, as it can very from drive to drive.

most of the drives I've had have had a little drawing on which jumper setting is which for master/slave.

There's also the fdisk active partition setting thing, but i don't know if that actually carries over from drive to drive or not. But its just simply a case of telling it which drive is the one to boot from, just I know from experience how easy it is to forget to set it sometimes and then wonder for hours why no drives are booting  lol

when i reinstalled for the first time i put both my partitions to active :o

it didnt work and i was like shit!

Ok, i plugged im my hdd, but it wouldn't get past the bios when i turned it on, so i turned my computer off immediatly to prevent any unwanted damage. What do i do, i just my computer to turn on with the harddrive pluged in so i can format it? I also don't know what you guys mean when you say jumper...

Any help would be great, Thanks.

Huh...last I checked it was a photograph of an HD :S

EDIT:

Circled and enlarged = jumper.

And if it changes to some gobbledygook, I'll kill myself.
ok i took my hdd out and there is no diagram on it, just a bunch of warning's. It's a Seagate Barracuda 60gb, i don't know if there would be a jumper diagram of that anyware to make it a slave. Also if i change the jumpers will i still be able to clear it, it has windows on it along with other crap cause it used to be my main hdd? Do i use tweezers or somthing to remove the jumper?

Edit: The jumper it is in right now is the second one any when i have it plugged in my comp. wont boot windows.

Just an update of what i did, i set the jumpers so that my drive is set as a slave but still when i turn on my computer it wont boot to windows, i have to unplug my slave drive for it to boot... what is my problem am i missing some major thing or what? I'm completelly stumped, i wanted to get this done tonight but im sure if that is going to happen. Should i plug in my hardrive when my computer is on and delete it then, or would that screw things up majorly?

Are you sure the IDE cable is in the right way? try removing the jumper all thogether. Some drives makes the drive go to cable select when you remove the jumper. That means that the cable selects what the drive will be, so if there's a master on the cable, it will go to slave.

And enter the bios when booting, and check if the bios detects the hdd.
