What ever hapend to him anyways
on Half life 2 Barney and of course gordon eli isac breen but.........one is missing isnt there something called the marrines........what ever happen to them

Did you get to the end of Op4? He was locked away by the G-Man. And although there's a possiblity of him returning, don't count on it, since Valve aren't really big fans of that expansion. And neither are most of this board, so be careful when mentioning Shepard.

As for the rest of the Marines, they were most likely slaughtered during the 7-Hour-War. Maybe a few of them were turned into Overwatch.

Why is it that nobody spells it right?

A-D-R-I-A-N S-H-E-P-H-A-R-D

I like Shephard.

Hint: don't write another "I X Y" now, you'll get killed.

The rest of the marines would have been killed during the Seven Hour War.

Didn't laidlaw say Op4 didn't count as canon anyway, excluding the nuke?

On the contrary, Valve said it's canon...i think...

But it should have been.

Shephard is a crap way of spelling it. Yet another crap facet of the character. In fact it might be the WORST bit.

Oooh, I didn't know that Jack 'Lost' Shephard spelt it that way too. Hmm, I think I've swung back towards liking Sawyer a bit more...

I think the problem with saying that 'Valve says it's canon' is that it should go without saying that Valve are not going to leap to contradict anything Gearbox wrote. After all, it was supposedly made under Laidlaw's 'supervision' although you yourself can decide what supervision means in that sense. Did it mean that Laidlaw watched everything they did, or was it rather a case of Gearbox saying:
'We've got an idea for a new race called Race X, Marc, that cool by you?'
'You got a way to fit them into the story?'
'uh...sure...yep, trust us'
'...k, go on then, just as long as they fit'
'WHOOPEE! (btw we decided to nuke Black Mesa too, l8z)'

...you decide.

So as long as Valve aren't going to openly contradict anything Gearbox did, then sure, it's canon. But I don't think it's the story Valve would have wrote if they'd made the game, and I don't think Valve are going to go out of their way to openly corroborate anything GB wrote either. So screw whatever OpFor says imo, it doesn't affect the story for me.

Surly the military could have stood some sort of chance against the combine.

The millitaries were already taking a beating from the whole mess from black mesa, not to mention all of the confusion going on. The combine struck in unexpectedly and they pretty muched used their most powerful technology

in my opinion as far as 'canon' is concerned, you cant pick and choose the bits you like and the bits you dont like from a single source in the expanded universe. everyone seems to accept the fact that black mesa is now a nuclear crater mearly from op4, but many of those same people dislike and discredit 'race x' and the gmans interest in sheppard.

if you dont think race x exists or that gman has any interest in shep, then black mesa is still standing.

If G man had no interest in Shepherd, he wouldn't have put him in stasis, would he?

perhaps i worded it badly, maybe it'd be better to say the fact that shep had a major part in the black mesa incident.

I'm sure they hit all our bases from high orbit.

Or just showed up and hit everything.

In a straight up fight I'm sure the military could fight synths we've seen in the game, but numbers come into play...

Though you are a n00b I can not hold down my hatred for you, how the hell could you spell it that badly? *grumbles*

Very well put, there are a lot of people on the forums that contradict themselves in this way. I must say I take OF as canon.

Also I know I've heard before (probably in a steam update) that though VALVe is currently working on no projects involving Shephard, Gabe does like the character and may consider using him in the future.

And yeah PRO-SHEPHARD

A better question is: Does Marc Laidlaw like Shephard and lots of Gearbox creations?

It doesn't really matter if Gabe Newell like's Shephard or not because GabeN is not the story writter, Marc Laidlaw is. Adrian Shephard's fate rests within' Marc Laidlaws pencil (or pen) and brain. Valve won't make a Shephard game for the sake of making it, there has to be some reasoning in it.

OF is cannon IMO. I do wonder how Race X fits in now though -- I had always assumed they where part of Nihilanth's forces.

I liked playing through OF quite a bit. Sometimes I liked it more than HL1 itself.

i really enjoyed op4 when it came out and i really enjoy it now (replayed through it again a couple of weeks ago) and i certainly think its canon, along with blueshift and decay, regardless of who made them.

race x were seperate from nihilanths forces but equally took advantage of the instability that the resonance cascade caused, although they didnt start appearing until much later (from gordons POV) in the story. i assume now that they are either on the run from the combine or have fallen to the combine.

I see. Well, some of the creatures are cool, perhaps we'll see them again as tools of the combine, though in all honesty as long as we're on earth I MUCH prefer to see the Overwatch / Civil Protection being deployed against us.

for some reason valve dont seem that keen on making existing creatures synths, they like introducing new monsters to fight.

tho i still think hunters are eyehounds turned combine and given longer legs.

They have a few similarities though I think they're closer to Striders though.

And striders can be larger, less-mobile, stronger houndeye synths.

THINK PEOPLE.

Yeah, although I like Freeman better than Shepard and HL1 better than Op4, I like both games and believe both of them to be canon. My theory is Race X is just some relatively tiny alien 'country'(compared to the Combine, who are an Empire) who tried to take advantage of the situation, failed miserably, then stayed the hell out of it. Especially when the Combine came.

okay sorry about the speling it was about really dark and sleepy

Shepard...
Sheperd...
Shepherd...
Shepperd...
Retard...

But where is Adrian Shephard?

I view OpFor as canon. That's not to say a lot of it is still relevant (Race X obviously isn't), but when Valve says it's canon, I'll accept that at face value.

I think a lot of people here knock Gearbox far too much for the story they penned for OpFor. I highly doubt that anybody at Gearbox, let alone Valve, had a full, comprehensive idea of what the Half-Life universe would consist of at the time of development. I don't think there was any planning of the Combine by the time Valve finished the first game, and I bet they didn't divulge too much in the way of sequel ideas when they handed the expansion to Gearbox.

So they introduced Race X, and it wasn't really what one would consider genius. But let's be honest. Neither was the entire scenario of the game it extended upon. It was given depth retroactively via HL2 and all its associated content, media, and developer gab.

Any way, Gabe Newell says he'd like to see Shephard return. Regardless of what the vocal haters here may like to believe, there is a demand for it. And I'd be more than happy if Valve dug him back up from the annals of history.

RaceX was purely a Gearbox creation that doesn't figure at all in my thinking about the world. Understand, they wanted to come up with a set of creatures that would create gameplay they knew how to make. They could have been making an original title or an add-on for some other franchise, and plugged RaceX into that--the reason being that they had gameplay they wanted to explore and needed the freedom of their own race of critters to conduct those experiments with. If Gearbox had kept making HL games, I suppose we might have seen these threads develop. Since BlackOps are not a Gearbox creation per se, but an opportunistic use of existing real-life elements, I don't see how the idea of canon applies to them.
