Hey guys, I was wondering wether anyone here could help me with a llittle problem I have with HL2. All I want to do is play the game in offline mode. (By the way, I haven't installed/activated the game yet) I have dial-up at the moment, but am considering ADSL, (among other things, takes less time to activate HL2) But since ADSL is always connected, how can I play in offline mode, which requires being disconnected? Surely Valve thought of this before launching Steam...

Indeed or you can just change the launch options in steam to start in offline mode i believe. It doesnt really matter tbh. I had DSL and i just have steam connected all the time. Even if im playing HL2 single player, then i can alternate to multiplayer online games, like Counter Strike or Halflife 2 death match. Its just easiest.

But i would suggest getting ADSL also, meaning your files will be unlocked faster and you could download all the updates much quicker, on 56k its a nightmare.

Not really hectic...not anywhere near a nightmare.

Why would you want to play offline if you have ADSL?

Quoted for teh emphasis!

damn straight. i have adsl, i only learned of steam after i had dsl, i never want to use steam on 56k, that would be bad :(

i dont see the need to go into offline mode in adsl, having steam running [online] in the background doesnt take enough bandwidth to make ANY difference at all [unless you get on a 64k plan, then you might be able to notice it]. and having steam running in the background doesnt take enough processor power to make a differnece [unless you have a dodgy comp]

Yeh, offline mode is for when you don't have a connection, in the end, if you have an always-on connection, like ADSL, it doesn't actually matter if Steam is online or not.

Can't say I've ever had a problem with it, works great. Used it when I moved out and had no money for Internets!

VDSL 100mbps is better. but ADSL should work fine.
