I recently just bought Advent Rising for xbox thinking I would be able to play it on my friends 360 because I'm hanging out with him for a week or so but turns out that it needs an upgrade to be able to work. But they dont have the upgrade on the site or anything. I never really liked xbox but this game was only made for xbox console and PC but Im not generally a PC gamer. So I bought. Does anyone know anything about this? Is there anything you can do to get the game to work on the 360? Because I was told since some people experience certain bugs (framerate issues) that it would runner better on 360. But It obviously isnt working. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Sean

Hey Sean, excellent name!

I dont have an X-BOX360 so I cant say for sure, but with most consoles you have to play by their rules. If you need some sort of upgrade to play the game, then you need to get the upgrade. With consoles, there isnt much in the way of work-arounds.

Although I dont understand why it wouldnt work at all on the basic system. Can you give us any more specific of a description of how it doesnt work? And what kind of upgrade does it say you need?

Well generally for the new 360, xbox games aren't compatable with it. But they do have compatability upgrades for xbox games on there website to be downloaded to be able to play those certain games. We did the June 2006 Backward compatability update, connected to Xbox Live for other updates. And the game still says "Can't be run on the Xbox 360". But it actually might be that it can't play in HD? ...so if we configure it to use the regular RCA jacks instead, putting it to the usual Xbox quality, maybe it'll work? I dont know...

Well... it seems you know more about it than I do. Having never owned a Xbox or 360, i dont think i can be of much help. Sorry, but I am sure someone else here will know how to help you.

360 has shite backwards compatibility. Too bad for me I didn't realise that until I'd already sold off my original Xbox.

You can download a compatibility update here that includes a few more games, and it's being updated now and then. Just burn the file to a CD and shove it in the 360.

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardscompatibility.htm (scroll down a bit)

Even then, some games have some pretty shocking audio and framerate issues (crawl on 360 when they're fine on original 'box... WTF?). And I've heard they're gonna stop the updates at about 20% of Xbox games. Pretty crap IMO =/

Actually it does an awesome job emulating the Xbox. Emulation is beyond comprehension in system requirements. For example, on your 3Ghz computer, you try to emulate a 3D Arcade game from 1989 (like Die Hard arcade or Hard Drivin'), with the fastest Arcade emulator, and you get 1 frame per second! Unplayable. It's that hard to do. You will need like a 6-10 Ghz processor or equivalent, which won't be available for years, and thats just to run crappy 1989 3D technology.

I don't really understand how they even get it to work so well on the 360. They must be re-doing some of the code to make the games run better?

As for the PS3, I'm nearly certain it will contain all of the actual chips from PS 1 and PS2 in there.

The Xbox 360 software emulates the games that it can, and just forget the rest (more demanding graphically), since they won't run well. That way, the price of the console is much cheaper (since you aren't buying the all the Xbox chips all over again). If you want to play Xbox games, then don't sell your Xbox, because it will be like 15 years before technology is advanced enough so you will be able to play them on your PC with an emulator. That's how demanding emulating is to do. You might need a 27 Ghz processor or something ridiculous. If you don't believe it, look back in time, processors used to be ~2 Mhz, now they are ~3 Ghz. In the future they might be 35Ghz, don't be shocked. Of course they are also doing things like multiple cores, so who knows how exactly it will pan out, but needless to say, you will need hardware technology that won't exist for a long time.

* You might want to argue this detail and that detail, but make sure you know what you are talking about first. While I didn't use a calculator or anything, there is no denying what I am generally trying to explain.

So, check compatibility lists, and see what other people say about how well it will run if you plan to try an Xbox game on the 360. For Halo 1 and 2 emulated on the 360, they must have rewrote much of the code for the patch to make it run so well in High Def. (at least I hear it runs and looks great)

Interpretation: (Many older console emulators use interpretation)
In interpretation the binary data is read and as each instruction is decoded it is executed, each instruction is executed every time it is encountered. Typically this method is the easiest to implement, however it is also typically the slowest in terms of execution time.

So it has to decode/translate every single line of code as it comes across them, and it's slow as balls, but for mass game compatibility, this is the only way to go, so all you need is the exact code from the game, and it can run them, but it will require a blazing fast processor compared to what was originally required (Super NES was ~ 2.3 Mhz) To use a faster type of emulation, each game will have to be re-coded.

I think it's safe to say the 360 uses Recompilation, and this would explain how it can possibly run the games fairly well, but it involves manually recoding and recompiling the game.
Recompilation, also called binary translation, involves a directly binary conversion from the binary data for the emulated platform into binary data suitable for execution on the targetted platform. This method usually provides a significant performance boost to emulation software, and it used by most emulators for 'next-generation' consoles. Recompilation typically comes in two varieties.

Thanks!

EDIT: Hah, that made me laugh so much I decided to put it in my sig. Congrats!
haha, thank goodness you didn't take it as an insult, i was thinking of suger-coating it some more. ;)

And here is me waiting for the ****ing disc in the bloody post.

I'm sorry but xbox sucks, all versions. I never really liked xbox (It is fast and all) but I prefer and have Playstation and ps2. It sucks that you cant really do backwards compadability. I have my xbox at my house (mostly for my bro and sis) but I'm going to be over my friends house until Next Sunday (10 days) so I wont get to play my new game until then which sucks. Oh well I guess. I still have Half Life 2 episode one to play on the PC!

Thanks for the replys guys.

Looks like 95% of the games have been made compatible by now, and they have more planned. Ironically, I also have a game that hasn't been made compatible yet - Colin McRae rally 2005 - my favorite xbox game, isn't one of them, and I even emailed Microsoft asking them to. LOL I love that game.

I still hope they do, just because, but I'm starting to not care, with Colin McRae 2007 coming, it's going to blow McRae Rally 2005 away, as far as I can guess.

Just not MINE! lol and apparently yours...

They do say that if it hasnt been added to the list (there plan is to make all xbox games compatible, at leasts thats what they say...) it is just probably taking longer for some games which I dont get. I still hope they do mine as well because I hang out at my friends a lot and he has 360. I dont even think the controller to our xbox works because my brother throws a mental fit :sniper: when he doesnt win and throws them around.

Man, I need to find a new handle. Everyone thinks im a chick.

Not really. It's sort of 50/50, and don't worry, there are girls with guy names by birth, and guys with girl names by birth, so it's even less of an issue than that right?

I figured that was one way to clear it up - by being presumptuous. I didn't want to put 'he/she', because that sounds kind of like calling someone 'it' to me for some reason - impersonal, I guess.
Anyway, sorry bout that brotha.

i didn't know you were a girl, and when that person said 'she' i was like 'double u tee eff' and ran away.

i didn't know you were a girl

IM NOT

rawr, im making things worse methinks. Isnt there someone else on these forums thats always thought to be a girl also?

EDIT: Wait, you run away from girls?
