Option 4 - doesn't matter as they'll be ineffective due to anti-cheat measures
Option 5 - I don't care, I'm going to play mostly single player
Option 6 - I don't care, cheaters can't stop me cuz I pwnz dem.
Option 7 - I'm a cheater so they don't scare me.
Option 8 - I play on well admined servers so they don't scare me.

If you're going to make a poll, at least include enough options to cover the possible choices.


EDIT: I choose options 4,6, and 8 btw.

..or not. it doesnt matter if it uses "Steam's Anti-Cheat technology", the fact is the hl2 client is ona unsecured comp, no amount of anti-cheat technology will stop people hacking it

Are you aware that there are undetected cheats by VAC? Go look for yourself. And VAC doesn't ban ips, where did you get that idea?

ADminmod server admins can ban by IP if and when a cheat is detected.

I do believe valve will work hard to combat hacks, they seem to like their closely guarded multiplayer but sadly in the world we live in I can't see hacks not appearing. And even if they don't the spectre of them will still be there. I get fed up of people yelling about hacks all the time when the opposition are just better than them. People would learn to be quite and just play if hacks had never been invented and for that reason alone all hackers and hack coders should have their testicles impaled on cocktail sticks and served up at dinner parties.

If valve keeps its own contigent of programmers actively rooting out hacks and making anti cheat updates then i forsee hacks not being an issue. However eventually someone will find a hack.

Where there is a will there is a way, where there is a way a hacker will find it, if a hacker found it then script kiddies will soon follow with cries of "I 4m t3h PW/\/XX0r!!!!111" while wallhacking, aimbotting, speedhacking, etc.

If valve wants to keep the servers cheat free they are going to have to watch the hl2 community like hawks.

BTW this is a very valid thread, so quit ripping on it, as cheating is a very valid issue

Hacking probably won't be quite as bad a problem with HL2, because it's a more recent engine. HL is the Quake 1 engine, which is antiquated and full of holes, hacking-wise. Cheat prevention even on THAT has come a long way, but there's only so much you can do.

i know quake 3 had its fair share of aimbotters. I remember cause when i used to play urban terror, the quake 3 mod, aim botters would pop up occasionally

Hmm... what about UT2k3? I was under the impression that newer game engines were less hackable. (Though a rudimentary aimbot wouldn't be too hard to pull off with almost any game, I think...)

By the way if you didn't know, Joolz quit programming cheats during the last month. And when he did, he released the code for others on his forums and partner sites. As long as these idiots will be around we will have cheaters ingame no matter what game it is be it ChessMaster 2000 or Quake 5. But it takes time to create/program a cheat especially opengl hooks, IMO the poll is very pessimistic: I'm guessing at least 6 months before anyone actually sees any cheating in Halflife 2 MP.

cannot speak 4 unreal, but every Q3 game got raped by teh 1 3 3 7 h4x0rs...i dont even think they had cheat-protection in mind when it was built.

whatever, viable thread...alot of us will be playing mp, and since it is a growing community, in general, cheat-protection will become a more pressing issue.

I find it highly illogical to engage in an activity which is fundamentally void of entertainment value to most who do not posses a competitive nature, then proceed to remove the competitive aspect of the activity by the process of cheating.

Indeed. It would appear that those who cheat are no longer seeking the same type of entertainment as the others playing - they are taking pleasure in the control they have over others, either to ruin their experience, or simply beat them. It's no longer competitive, it's simply indulging the need for power that comes from insecurity.

And from this I say we kill them all. Preferably slowly and while causing immense pain.

What u want is some Valve Super admins who can hack servers to join them, then spawn a big police car with flashing lights, drive over, get out and shoot the cheater at which point hes perm banned from everywhere

now that would be anti-cheat tech worth making.
