3.when its done - march 2006
4. pc gamer
5. dunno wher you heard that - we will learn more about the story in the game. the real rumour is that there will be no hl3 but that the expansions like aftermath will continue and end the story...
6 hl would be ruined on the projector screen - its perfect as it is

You don't seem to know what an expansion pack even is.

Rong! Monkey Island, Broken Sword, Far Cry, Unreal Tournament and Warcraft (the universe) would all make good movies if done right. Also, Doom could have been awesome. But it wasn't.

Videogames movies should not be attempted. Games are games. Movies are movies.

You could say the same for books.

Yeah, totally. Not.

When someone makes a book of a movie, they keep by the blueprint of the book. It follows the exact storyline, bar some cuts and slight changes, and keeps the flow the same.

You cannot do that with a game.

I couldn't agree more. :imu:

...are you saying it's impossible to make a video game into a good movie? I propose that it may not have been done yet and perhaps that current endeavors don't look promising, but I believe it's absolutely possible to do. The trick is to make a movie based on the storyline, not the game per se. Video game storylines often don't lend themselves to more than enough setting/character development to get the player into some action. Some do, Halo and Half Life being good examples in my opinion. Doom doesn't, and unfortunately, paired with an even worse script, won't make the best movie. We're probably not going to get blockbusters or classics out of these game translations, but an entertaining story, if done right, can make a fun movie.
Look at movies that translated to games, Star Wars for example. To play that game and have never seen the movies, it might not even occur to you that there is fertile ground for an outstanding movie there. I see games with good storylines like Halo and Half Life and know that it's entirely possible to make a good movie from the game.

... for those of you who don't like Halo, the idea still works with just Half Life, or any other game you think has a decent storyline.

Why not exactly? Sure, you can make the distinction that films and books are both essentially a linear pre-set narrative, and that in games the emphasis is on interaction rather than the plot. But in the same way you could argue that books describe what is going on in the character's head or that to some extent they leave everything to the reader's imagination, which films don't do. In any case, I don't think it's true that all games hold interaction to be more important than the story - Monkey Island and Broken Sword come to mind again. Besides, your argument that 'games are games and films are films' cease to be relevant when you take a game and turn it into a film. Because then it's a film and not a game.

Also, Jurassic Park the film is rather different from Jurassic Park the book. It's still good. Film don't necessarily stick to the original blueprint.

But if you're really loose with it, and work with the simple concept of 'space marines trapped in a facility on Mars must fight demons flooding through a portal to hell that was build by an ancient civilisation' then you could make a pretty good film. Pity really that they didn't.

Perhaps a good one could be made, but why bother?
Countless videogames are going to get slaughtered in the process.

I reckon the Halo movie will be good despite your irrational hatred of the source material. :p

Never stoped people butchering good books.
