What is your thoughts on the direction this community, and namely these forums will go once the game is actually released?
I'm sure the first couple of weeks will hold lots of discussion about aspects of the game, the characters, and the storyline/plot. Then in the weeks shortly following the release, most will have completed the game, mods will start popping up, and the editing forums will be jumping. What about months later? What will happen to these forums and this community months after the buzz is over?
Will they slowly die off into nothing, the lights just go out, or will we pick up another game and keep going with it? Whats your thoughts>

I don't think the buzz will die with HL2. It's not even out yet, however, it remains the only thing that we think about! When it does release, there won't even be room for anything else!

i think the main issue is people posting spoilers all over the place with no warning. I might avoid the forums until i finish the game myself. Also, the number of users that show up here will probably die down but the committed ones will stay. I know i will

Yeah, I'm not touching these forums once the game is released....until I beat it (should be about 3 days max).

I think the mod community has an environment to breed in these forums... That will continue until HL3 or something way cooler :)

For me the buzz died September 30th. I visit these boards 10x less than I used to....

well i pld the call of duty demo last night, had a little dabble and i was really impressed. think i will buy it, gimmi something to do instead of waiting for HL2

nah blood, me going to come here till halflife3.net are developed

yeah itll be nice when we can finally talk about hl2 mapping in the hl2 mapping forum :|

I won't have time for these forums, anymore. I work 8:00AM - 5:00 PM, barely gives me time to do anything, before I can get proper sleep. I do plan on taking the day off, when Hl2 is released, though. Once I beat it, I think I shall return. Hurry up, November!

I will stay.

But when Half-Life2 is released i will lock myself in my room and hope the darknes feeds me.

YES me too, my univerisity is consuming all my time, I start at 9am till 6pm everyday except wednisday. But I will still come here during my break time at the university as I am doing right now I have a break and I am typing from the Main Lab, when I go home I spend max of two hours studing then playing cs+q3 and chatting in here till 11pm then the loop will be repeated again and again and again......again...etc....for 8 Months.

this is the last time im signing up on any game forum BEFORE a game comes out.
id prefer to not hear about a game until a few months before release.

done it with alot of games, diablo ii, trespasser, games around 98-01, hadnt done it for ahwile but with my desire to continue working for the gman i just couldnt resist.
i think i will be safe though, ill probably have kids before half life 3 comes out.

The beta theft is nothing. The source theft has effectively ruined everyone's Christmas for 2003.

Whenever the game does come out, I'm sure it wil lrecieve alot of post-release hype. Modders will be busy at work creating their own games with the SDKs, and then there's the Vampire: The Masquerade game that also runs on the HL2 engine - maybe someone will mod that game too? Gordon as a Nosferatu or Sabot? That would be funny.

this place should be pretty quiet for a bit, but it will pick up with people sharing experiences, asking for help, and a lot more talk about multiplayer and mods.

Mod's wont start popping up a week after the release, 3-4 months.

this isn't like the halflife release. people having been working on hl2 mods for a long time actually, and now that some dev tools are released it gives even more support to modders. if the game comes out in april, you can be sure that many many mods will be ready for their first release within a week of hl2 coming out.

thats abit unrealistic.. yes i realize some of the tools may have been released (not the SDK right?) but ur forgetting the playtesting.. mod teams will need play testers for some minimum amount of time to fix the obvious bugs and balance issues and that will only happen when generally most pple have the game.

i say a good guess would be about 5-6 after the HL2 release will we see a mod release..

im sure its one thing working with modding tools for a couple of months without the game itself, its another thing when u actually go to play test etc..

Maybe I'm showing my ignorance here, but with no game to mod, how far can modders actually get? Yeah, I'm sure alot of ideas are popping up, but I would be surprised if any code is getting written. Don't you need a game for that?

max payne 2 ought to be done downloading by the time i get home from work. so i'll have that, homeworld 2 and zero hour to tide me over until HL2 comes out.

I go to Polytech 8am - 4:30pm Mon - Wed, work experience 8am - 5pm Thurs and work 8pm - 1am 5 random days a week and I still have heaps of time to visit these forums, aswell as having a life. I dont see how a regular 40 hour week could interfere with your life, it's pretty standard for most people.

Who said I don't work Saturday & Sunday? Not to mention all of the other things I have to deal with. Such as laundry, groceries, bills, etc. Here in about about 3 - 4 weeks, I should be getting a job at EBGames --- which means even less time. Of course, it's my choice, but still...it's less free time. Unless I cut back hours on my current job, and juggle the two into different days, or what not. Bills/Work eat up the most time. I just threw the others in there, because I could.

the beta. and youd be surprised how complete the editor tools are as well. now i know you can't make a polished complete mod with the tools, but you can do a LOT of work with these tools, so as only to leave probably a few days of polishing up.

people will still be dumb, some people will still be nice, a lot of people will post here.

When the posting dies down a lot, you can be sure I'll be around a lot. Thats when a forum becomes more of a real community.

ditto

September 30'th killed all the hype for hl2, now i'm just feeling like, "I'll get it when it comes out"

not quite the equivalent of lucas raping my childhood but just another nail for cynacism
