Age and dating....

I've got no problem with it morally - although tbh, your mates should be ripping you for it - it's commonly accepted 3 years is the allowed gap - it's down to the two of you though, clearly.

I'm just still puzzled how at 22 you can find 16yearolds attractive..
 
So do people have a problem purely with the age difference or the age of the girl, or is it both of those factors?

I'm just about to turn 31 (on 15th) and i'm dating a 24 year old, so does everything said above (except the legal stuff, obviously) apply to someone like me too??

As for there being a "commonly accepted age gap" - since when? Does this apply regardless of the age of the two people? - i.e. is it ok for a 46 year old guy to date a 40 year old woman but not for a 22 year old guy to date a 16 year old girl?

btw i should say that when i was 22, i know i couldn't have dated most 16 year olds i knew because, like Badger hinted at, the changes i went through between 16 and 22 (college, uni, being legally able to drink / go clubbing etc) was too much for me to have anything in common with them. But at the end of the day, it had nothing to do with the age difference.
 
The commonly accepted age gap is a social thing I noticed when I was younger, it tends to apply more at school I guess. As in people will take the piss if you're dating someone significantly younger than you.

I'd say it's more todo with the age of the girl herself, not the age gap - and like you said, the things I've been through, even 16 to 19 are massive. Personally I'd find the gap between us insurmountable.
 
the main problem i had was actually getting able to see/talk to the girl i had.. (as you know) she was 16 and im 21... but anyways

But i did enjoy it when i had it.. i just wished id had more of it.. and less of the not seeing/talking to part ya know. its seriously rough but (i gained alot of xp and i was happy for a while) i enjoyed it while it lasted.

OK, since when was it illegal to date a "minor"? Please, find the law for that. It's illegal to have sex with a minor when you're of age, true. I have NO intentions on sleeping with her for moral reasons, and they are mutual. She wants to wait until marriage, I really don't give a shit. Sex isn't the only thing on my mind, beyond contrary belief.

We have fun together, we genuinely appreciate each others company, and enjoy it alot. But I guess this just helped me to figure out why people think it's wrong. They have it down to a biased decision. Either it's gross, or they think it should be illegal, or you're cool with it. Too bad most of the people are on the "illegal" bandwagon for that thought.

And just for another statement, sex isn't an option in my head at all...I have a hand, and she says she wants to wait, fine by me...but if she changes her mind when she turns 17, I won't stop her.

Yes but this isn't really about whether you do or not, this is about what other people think. And other people will almost always think the absolute worst when they see you two together.

That's how I see it anyways. And if you say "well I don't care what other people think," then this whole thread is moot.

That's what this entire thread is about, finding out what people think. And I see some valid points, because, hell, I've thought them. But I guess you have to experience to think otherwise...
 
I'm just gonna say that your relationship doesn't seem tenable in the long run. The age cap is more than just the number of years between two people. In this case, it's that a fifteen year old girl does not have the same kind of mental maturity that you do and she still has a lot of progress to make. This is compounded by abstinence (which I've never seen anything good come from). You say sex isn't an option in your head, but any dating relationship I'd consider healthy inevitably involves it, and three or more years is a long time. I don't know how long you've been together, but at some point that immense difference is going to rear its head and one of you (or both) is going to jump ship.

I am not attempting to be mean, insensitive, or caustic. That is just my honest take on it.
 
I remember when I was 15/16 I was playing rounders (like baseball) with my friends during the summer, and some of the younger kids in our street joined in. We were also laughing at my female friend on turning 16 and slagging her off because she was now legal to have sex.

You are not mature at 16.

Another perspective other than 56 to 50 year old - a 16 year old going out with a 10 year old. Thinking back to the girls I knew at 16, I can't say they're even slightly mature compared to a 19-21 year old, and I would never want to go out with anyone that age.

I mean, *cough cough* sorry, here in Aus, if you're 16 you can sehx up to a 18 year old, a 17 year old can sehx up a 19 year old and when you're 18 it's free reign. At least that's what I heard.

14 -> 13-15
16 -> 15-18
18 -> 16-21
20 -> 17-24
22 -> 18-27
24 -> 20-30
26 -> 21-33
28 -> 23-36
30 -> 24-40
32 -> 26-45

Maybe I'll condense that into a mathematical formula later if I have time. (ha ha)

The main thing to be cautious about is if you're the younger person and they're outside the age range, as you're probably being taken advantage of and almost guaranteed to regret it later. I wouldn't recommend starting a relationship with anyone outside that age range without establishing a solid friendship & knowing what kind of person they are around other people. The older person is usually either desperate, horny, and lacks the best intentions if a solid relationship isn't established first.

P.S. While that may/can be true of people your own age, you're much more likely to be seriously hurt, taken advantage of, used, and abused by someone outside that age range. A person of such an age shouldn't be looking so low in the first place.

Well, the way you're explaining it, there is only one side. I am not desperate, horny *well, I am a guy, but it's not on my "to do" list...*, I HAVE the best intentions of a solid relationship. I know you're not saying I'm a bad guy or anything, which this is generally how things go, I'm far from the typical guy stance. I'm not going for the younger girl just because she'll be an "easy mark" or anything. As previously stated, I genuinely enjoy her company alot. Maybe she's going to take advantage of me for all you know!

I realize things aren't as 1-dimensional as my age-chart.

I posted that having not read your later entry. You're not interested in sex and you two seem to know each other well. I wouldn't exactly pass on my stamp of approval without knowing more, but this isn't a horrible difference. If it was 24/16, I'd say no way in hell though.

Personally I'd never hook up with anyone younger than I am. Even if it's only a difference of a year, I still feel like I'd be taking advantage of her. Of course, that's just me. There's nothing wrong with a younger guy getting with a hot older chick though. That's just awesome.

Jesus, you listen to lex and terry? I hate them. They replaced our original morning show (a good one with a bunch of hacks in their early 20's who liked to play good music and have a good time), and turned it into some self help crap. They're the reason I started listening to CD's in the morning.

Divide your age by half, and then add 7. That is the youngest you are allowed to date.

Ex: 20 / 2 = 10 + 7 = you can date a 17 year old. 30 / 2 = 15 + 7 = 22.
