Age of Empires 3

Looks pritty sick. I dunno really. A lot of stratige games have got to the point where they don't really matter in graphics anymore. Its all about gameplay now imo.

Sorta, Computer edited concept art imo.

I totally agree im sick of hearing what an engine can and cant do.

I remember reading about someone saying that even though starcraft is a 2d game it is still one of the most popular games to date.

I loved the age of empires games, cant wait for the new one, although if it looks like that, its going to run like crap on my comp so I will most likely stick to the old games.

I used to really like the age of empires games, but I always outgrew them too fast. I don't just mean I literaaly got older, but my ambitions got too big...thats why i enjoy the Total War games so much more ;)

There is no way the game will be like that, its simply not a playable look. If it weren't a strategy game, I could understand perhaps but that would just be annoying to try and control.

I think that's AOE 3's real graphics. The sunlight makes it look spectacular, but if you take that away and look at the individual models- it just looks like any other RTS out there, but with slightly more detailed models and amazing water graphics.

But while i do think this is in-game graphics, i DON'T think this is an in-game screenshot. Looks more like a demo clip that's running from the engine to me- i can't see a city of that detail being any use in a game, unless the campaign mode it very realistic ;)

The graphics are getting better so it might be an in-game shot, problay from a movie in the game. Besides the Age of Empires games bored me to death, to much resource gathering can make you mad. Might check it out though.

yea, i much prefer games like C+C generals, BFME and Warcraft 3, with only 2 or even 1 resource. Generals is probally my favorite RTS, because its simple but very strategic.

Very VERY true.
Starcraft - 12\21\04(December 21, 2004) 8:23 PM. 113,008 People on at once currently. 30 Thousand Games Currently. 254 thousand on battle.net total Currently. 51 Thousand games total Currently.
Starcraft - Made in 1998. It is fully 2D. Huge x2 game in korea. Came at the perfect time in Korea to become massivly popular.

One of the most played games currently.
Starcraft has 3 diffrent races. Each massivly diffrent from eachother. How they look, how they tech up. How they evolve into new units\make guys. There "abilites". When I say diffrent I dont mean AOE diffrent where you got a diffrent guy look they tech up pretty much the same. I mean RADICALLY diffrent in every possible way. The Protoss warp things, the terran build things and the zerg evolve. How they build units is totally diffrent. The game is nearly 100% balanced. It is still being sold in stores for $20 dollors along with its expansion pack as the Starcraft: Battlechest. Was made by blizzard entertainment and came with internet support under battle.net. Battle.net is a huge free service, with tons of gamers on. Gamespy cries when it sees it x 5. Starcraft also has quite a nice campaign.
I suggest starcraft to any true RTS fan.

Seen the pic in pc gamer. Can't tell.

I don't own starcraft, but i've played it and it's very similar to Warcraft 3, which is one of my favorite RTS ever. Everything blizzard do is impecably balanced and tweaked- if a game is made by blizzard, you are garanteed near- perfection.

omg omg !
finally Age Of Empires 3 !! w00000t

it looks like in game shot

There's no way that's an in game screenshot.

Love the series tho - and can't wait (wasn't very impressed with Mythologies)

Actually there is quite a fine line between Warcraft 3 and Starcraft. It dwells into battles and gameplay and resources.
In Warcraft 3 its set up, so you micro your units more. This is not saying that micro in starcraft is non existant. In Warcraft 3 though, there is less resource managment and expanding that SC. In real sc maps(ladder maps) you can eventually expand into 5 diffrent areas easily. In Wc3 you probably wont every expand to over 3 diffrent places. Both do focus on battles though.
A fine line is also this. Warcraft 3 is about small battles. Starcraft is about huge insane battles across planets.

Starcraft yes is by far the most balanced RTS I have ever laied eyes upon. Survived this long, still gets 100k people, no popular mods. Just shows how good gameplay can take a game. Also, Starcraft I believe, currently does hold more people on average than Wc3. I can only hope SC2 is announced at E3 2005.

If it is an ingame screenshot, well.... I'll still have my rome total war. Massive Battles :), easy managment. Lots of microing. If it does somehow have those graphics....well....crap amount of units(onless it comes out in 2006).

Warcraft 3 is a great game, though the "melee" is not my style. Rather I map make for it. Though barely anymore.

StarCraft and WarCraft 3 seem similar to me too ... however I hate WC3 and I love SC. It's weird, but SC is just such a better game. The sides are much more unique while at the same time even more balanced, theres less of a focus on micro-management, although it's still there. The game is just better, plus I like sci-fi settings more than fantasy ones.

My favorite RTS series is C&C though. Although Generals and RA2 were the worst plot wise and did a lot of damage to the series, they have the best online modes of any RTS out there IMO.

And EA in their wisdom have stopped supporting it. Their servers are shutting down soon next year...and there's loads of bugs and cheats used online.

Yeah, StarCraft is one of if not the best RTS I have ever played but i haven't played any of the WarCrafts though, might check them out too. Also another good RTS that just came out would be Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War, no resource gathering and you can literally have 100 units onscren fighting at once. I wouldnt do the Single player though, really dumb and too boring. The Skirmishes though are really awsome and me and my friend play eachother over LAN all the time. Just try the demo for it.

I loved SC & as far as I'm aware, the expansion pack was called SC: Broodwars? I know, I've played it about a billion times. SC:BW is the best RTS sci-fi! Max out at 600 units if you have the resources and play protos :smoking: and mind control terran & zerg.

SC will live forever!

Warcraft 3 tried to compete, played both expansions, but it will never match the SC battles. Not enough expansion, and defintely not enough fast past skirmishes. AOM tried the large battle front & although it was fun, just didn't match it. AOE 2 was good but sieges lasted too long for good gameplay. Haven't played Rome yet, but from what I've seen at friends houses, it just doesn't seem to be that intense. Nothing can beat a good zerg/zelot rush in Starcraft. Just the opinion from a humble gamer who has finshed way too many games. By the way, anyone hear old enough to remember War Winds- an old RTS?

I love to make RTS maps. I've made an RPG map, where you take control of a paladin struggling to save a city from it's imminent destrucion. I've even included sound files and music, so while the map is about 30mb big, its damn kewl :D I haven't actually finishe dit though, i'm about 90% done. last time i touched it was in the summer.

the link doesn;t work for me, can someone upload the screenshot for me please?

played both expansions
Wc3 only has one expansion. TFT. The Frozen Throne.

I love map making for sc and Wc3. Sc's map making community has simple pushed the borders of sc's engine. Using the...bad programming..to "skip" in new things. Like with starforge or scmdraft 2. Warcraft 3 I have made several attempts at a nice 3rd person rpg. I'm great with triggers, both Wc3 and Sc. Sc I am OK with terrain. Wc3...I hate the terrain.

Age of Empires and Age of Empires 2 were amazing. Both of those games are perfect examples on how a strategy game should be produced.

This game hasn't been officially announced yet, but is already on my "must buy list". AoE series is that good.

I LOVED AoE 1, I liked 2 but it was pretty much the same. I can't remember the name of the 3D one, but it was exactly the same also, very boring.

It kind of turned into the CoD/MoH of strategy games.

I loved AOE1 and AOE2 and its expsansion but I didnt like age of mythology that much.

I am hoping this new age of empires will allow me to strategize a lot more with my units. Sometimes I felt like all I had to do was just run in and slaughter everything. In age of empires I usually just ended up plpacing my archers in a box formation and put a monk in the middle and just run around the map destroying whatever came in my way. I would like to be able to make battle plans, and have my unites work togethor. For instance if my swordsman saw that the enemy was attacking my archers he would run over and help save my archers instead of attacking the building or some other enemy.

I remember the roman expansion to AoE, i had scenario with a horseman, archer, and soldier (i think) and i had to get my way through a whole city filled with troops and guard towetrs and i just couldnt do it. I was about 12, but still, it was a mighty challenge. And the end of me liking mini management of units :)

i still play AOE2 with friends at lan parties. Then we heard about AOM and bought that, but it turned out to be shit

I think that's an in-engine shot.

Look at the trees, they are the same as AOM's.

I loved AoE 1 and 2. However if they are going for an Elizabethan era game then I don't think I will enjoy it as much as I would like. For some reason I despise war and history starting from the renaissance and going until the start of WW1. I have no idea why but it it is just not a very appealing time zone for me.

EDIT: I don't see why it can't be an ingame screen shot. None of that is unrealistic in what current graphics engines can do, plus I suspect it just looks weird because of the camera angle.

1) Prussia
2) Austria-Hungry
3) Ottoman Empire
4) Napoleon

Those are just some of the possibilities that can be covered. I really love European history going from the renaissance to WWI. :p

Bah! I hate it all.

Also after seeing the British Flag in the picture (Its on one of the ships) it looks like the game takes place in the 1800's.

I loved Age of mythology, but then I like fantasy so...

Anyway, Rome: Total War is indeed one of my favorite RTS games, its just something special about seeing the enemy getting killed in rains of arrows until they finally get the ladders to the walls, and after intense fighting forcing me to retreat to the town square where I finally managed to fight them back.

Multiplayer is bad, simply becouse its weird. Random numbers are different for each user, so a catapult might kill the enemys general for me, but for the enemy he is still alive.

WH40K: Dawn of War is the best RTS for multiplayer I have played (and that includes starcraft) imo .

Yes, it is. Ever heard of bloom?

PlanetAgeofMythology.com has a couple of small new screens of AoE3. So far it looks damn good, almost too damn good. And yes, that teaser shot does seem to be in-game. Head on over?

Theres an 8 page preview of it in the new US pc gamer (February).
