Computer Games - In terms of gameplay how will Age of Empires III differ from previous Ensemble games and RTS titles in general?
Greg Street - This is a big, ambitious game. The biggest new feature is the Home City, which takes the idea of a persistent character from RPGs and applies it to an RTS. Your city back in Europe is like your character, and as it gains experience levels instead of earning new skills or talents, it earns new technologies. Our team loves to argue about which of these upgrades are the best ones to get, and in which order you should get them. We took a look at every aspect of Age of Kings and tried to consider if we needed to change it. We changed the beginning of the game dramatically. Instead of starting with a Town Center, a few villagers and some safe resources, you start on a ship and have to land on the shores of the New World. Before you can think about building a colony, you have to decide where to place it. It's a simple change that has big ramifications to how the rest of the game plays out. We have changed (and improved!) a number of features, from the ways walls are built, to metagame features, such as the degree to which players can turn on or off specific elements of the UI.
