AI can smell?

hmm what does that mean ?

Say u just trod in lets say errm headcrab shít.

A combine would trace the smell and look for u ?

its either a typo lol or its just a scripted event "i smell something" (no u dont u were just told to say that) or its like a box around an object which tells them it smells...

Nothing amazing by any stretch...

Funny tho :) "I smell intergalactic molten burning headcrab flesh... and... waFFles ^_^"

The AI of certain monsters in Hl1 could smell if I recall correctly. Some of the xen creatures would be able to follow you without actually seeing your or were you went because they could smell you. Something like that.

Actualy the creators of STALKER advertised the same feature. They say that the player will leave a trail of scent behind him which the monsters can follow. Not sure if Valve means a similiar ability will be present in HL2 (phermone grenade jumps to mind)

Easily done, just like AI can have line of sight, AI can have a radius of smell, so when your trail is in the radius it can track you, pretty cool really.

Besides the whle smell thing, some of those other features are truly amazing. For example:

- Allowing modders to control facial expressions
- The materials and their strengths.
- The multiplayer network code.

Truly, Source is a revolutionary game engine.

It's a shame it isn't very useful, unless you had a Smell-O-Meter.

^ Yeah, it's impressive, I like the fact that AI could tunnel to reach you if you hide, I could imagine giant worms ala Tremors tracking you overground, underground, relentlessly wriggling their way towards you. Fun. :monkee:

In the preview for HL1 thay said that AI could smell too. lol :p

Is this one of those joke's, like my dog has no nose, how does he smell? Terrible.

Well A.I.'s have noses, but I don't really think they smell.

In HL1, if you killed a headcrab and a bullsquid was nearby, and you stayed hidden the bullsquid would look into the air and then walk over to eat the creature, same with the Alien Grunts (i hope they come back, they were cool) they would walk over and start eating with their little lower hand.

I'd expect it would be more advanced in HL2.

*sniff* I smell Zombies

Valve like to think and say things that make them look better then they are.

This is pretty negative. Other than the delay, Valve has been on top of things, made great games and keep raising the bar as far as top of the line gaming goes.

Not to mention the antlions and pheremones gameplay.

Think before you speak. It helps you sound like less of a knong-knong head.

Yep..gah, I can't wait for STALKER...

under renderer it says:

. Deformable terrain

will this be like red faction where you can blow holes in walls and stuff? that was a cool feature that a lot of games could make good use of.

headcrabs leaving behind headcraps?

technically a headcrab defecating would leave behind a human corpse.

On topic: It means some AI, do not need a line of sight to be able to determine your location.

this would be most fitting for aliens, such as bullsquids etc.. if you recall bullsquids sniffed the air with their tentacles in HL1 as well.
you don't have to stink for an animal to be able to pick up your scent.

Tremors, what a superb idea for a MOD - quick go create it

It's more likely to be for 'terrain' only, i.e. outdoors areas can take rocket hits and deform.

Tremors is a classic film. Just a shame they destroyed it with the 2nd 3rd and FOURTH films....

Hmm, actually was there a fourth? I'm pretty sure there was. Have never bothered to watch it obviously, kinda like Free Willy 5 :S

The Fourth was set in the cowboy era, IIRC. It showed the original discovery of the first Graboids. And a Graboid getting blown apart with a punt gun, which was cool.

"A.I. can smell" is bullshit. The computer always knows where you are, so it decides if you are close enough to an alien for it to detect you. A computer program can't smell you.

You could say the same for the ai thinking, the ai seeing and the ai moving - howevers its not `program bullsht`.

It could be coded that the player leaves a trail, that trail gets weaker over time and the ai reads strong signals and follows it.

So its not bs at all.

If they use smell it won't be anything impressive. It will be a raduis from the monster where you could be hidden from sight lines but still detected. It's not like wind direction or air ventilation would affect anything.

Which is too bad. It could be fun but really hard to notice. Rub your self with zombie goo and walk past them. That's what I call FUN.

Oh man, I remember hearing this kinda BS when I was a little kid. (the comupter cheats cuz it knows everything!)

(btw, a computer program cannot see hear, or think either. Its all just a clever simulation)

Of course the software knows your location in relation to the enemy. That does not mean the enemy AI uses that information. They dont want the AI to be psychic. Now if you're in line of sight, how far away you are is irrelivant. If you can see them it can be summised that the can see you. Smell doesnt come into it.

Smell here means that they can get the feeling that something is up, and follow your trail much like a dog could, when you are out of their line of sight. As long as they included enough factors to make this somewhat realistic (cant trace through water, or walking through headcrab poop makes it easier), then I think its perfectly resonable to claim that they can smell you.

I do believe it would follow your trail, not just move towards your location,. (ie, if you ran over to the right before going around a corner to the left, then the AI would follow to the right before turning that corner). Thats the real test right there.

the comupter cheats cuz it knows everything
It doesen't cheat... but it ALWAYS knows where you are, beacuse you are in the program and the program... (matrix)

It means that if gordon fart hell will be leashed...
:p
Actully i think this only applies to Xen aliens... maybe they can smell you from a distance so you can't run... but combine are humans so most likely youll have to fart...

Well, "smelling" where a person has been is differen than just knowing where that person is. For instance, suppose a monster knows where you are (radius), he would likely be taking the most direct path.

However, if he were "hounding" you, he would follow your previous path until he has line-of-sight.

It's different and the monsters would react as the programmers made him react. It's possible that Headcrap disguises your scent as well, meaning you may have an avenue of escape by covering your tracks.

The antlions do that.

yeah., theres a level where you have the choice of cooking some bacon in a pan or eating a prepackaged sandwich.. if you cook the bacon zombies come

it's a subtle hint from the developers, to remind the gamers to put the game down every now and then to take shower....
