This is kind of a long shot, but does anyone have one they like?

I bought one recently but plan on returning it. It seems to help a bit, but not much. It's just not good enough.

I'm planning on ordering this one:

It is the best performance/price one I've come across after doing some research. It's rated much better (although value is a factor in the ratings) than ones that cost many times more.

This should be great for keeping my room with awesome air quality, and filtering all the pollen, dust, and other particles. Filters can be expensive, and one nice feature is that the HEPA filter in this unit is permanent - you just vacuum it.

i need one but i hear most of them are a bitch to clean. My doctor actually advised me NOT to buy one...

Just inhale all that dust and those mites, you bitch!

But seriously...

I'm worried about all the shit I'm inhaling.

You know, I have a ceiling fan, and it has about an inch thick layer of dust on the top of each blade where it collects as it slices through the air.

That can't be good!

I think I may have allergies to a certain kind of pollen, so that's the main reason, but also I always feel like I can't breathe in here, then I panic, which makes my heart rate increase, which means i need more oxygen, and start breathing harder. Some kind of anxiety attacks.

only because if you don't clean the thing properly it can do more harm than good.
Just clean it you bum!

You should think about owning a pet that you have to feed and clean up after for a couple years before thinking about any serious responsibility. I don't recommend owning a plant because they don't whine if you don't feed them, they just die.

EDIT: probably not my place to say this sort of thing, never mind.

I got allergies and I still go for raw air. Because that's what real men breathe.

not sure what you're getting at. All I'm saying is if some purifiers are not cleaned on a daily basis they fail to serve their purpose and do the opposite of what they are meant to do. This isn't me talking out of my ass, it's what the doc told me.

What that has to do with pets is beyond me, just trying to help. My allergies are brutal but I just stick to cleaning my room a lot as well as taking meds.

Your doctor: Haha, what a sucker. He actually thinks air purifiers make the air worse if you don't clean them for a day. Without that air purifier, it'll only be a month or two before he develops bronchitis. Spiriva prescription kickback, here I come!

It just blew my mind that pulling the filter out of the back and running a vacuum on it once a month or once year was too much work. It irked me.

That was before you told me that your doctor claimed they had to be cleaned every day, which I'll admit, would be a chore.

About the claim: well, I balked at first, thought he was wrong, but I decided to give that some credibility; I mean he is a doctor.

I've been doing research for the past couple hours and I'm quite alarmed at what I've found.

Basically some of these things are very bad for you, even deadly. Specifically ozone generators.

I dug deeper and found that all air purifiers that use ionizers release at least some ozone.

I did a great deal of reading at California's Environmental Protection agency website and found that they are banning quite a few of these 'air cleaners' because they produce air quality that would render a smog warning.

Can you believe that shit?

Not only that, but the ozone can combine with other gases like the emissions from cleaning products with pine scent, turpentine, and things of that nature and form deadly combinations like formaldehyde!

By the way, California has the strictest pollution standards in the US, so you can trust this.

Apparently, the model I've selected emits ozone 13 times less than U.L.'s acceptable level, so I guess that's not bad.

But after reading much more, it says:

The most effective method of controlling indoor air pollution is through prevention: eliminating pollution at its source.

To minimize the release of pollutants indoors:

• carefully follow directions on consumer products such as cleaning agents, paints, and glues;
• properly maintain and operate gas- and wood-burning appliances;
• restrict smoking to outdoor areas;
• purchase building materials and wood furniture that do not emit formaldehyde;
• use candles and incense sparingly, if at all; and
• clean frequently and thoroughly to prevent dust and mold build-up

Use plenty of ventilation: be sure there is adequate airflow to/from the outdoors. This can be achieved by opening
windows, using exhaust fans near pollutant sources (e.g. above gas stoves), and increasing airflow through
the use of mechanical ventilation systems. If your home is equipped with a central forced air system, you should
also consider upgrading the filter
So apparently a filter system without an ionizer is the best option, but even then you are going to want to select one that has been reviewed by credible sources to determine its cleaning ability.

I think I'm going to hold off on buying an air cleaner for a while. These air cleaners are soon to come under government regulation to test their claims and to ensure they are safe.

In the mean time, I'm going to do some serious house cleaning, buy a few plants, and get some fresh air.

not to be confused with his red car pictured in his avatar. duh.

I have one and the only reason why I like it is because it helps keep the dust off of things.

I hate dusting every other day and dust all over everything ruins my day if I don't clean.

Dust sucks.

Well yes, because you aren't a car.
