Akira the Movie

The wheelchair kid IS Louis Anderson. And I think Morgan Freeman should be worked in somewhere too.

that's the beauty about akira. The character design is very simple and can be played by any human and still resemble the anime version of that character. I'm not sure how well dicaprio will play kaneda, but hey, he's a good actor and people these days can work wonders with make up so im confident he'll be an awesome kaneda.

what human has an overly large head with huge eyes, no chin and a puny mouth ..sounds like a circus freak to me

anyways I dont see how anyone could say a whilte person could play those two characters, they're japanese, the entire thing takes place in tokyo ..the fact that the Dicario movie is set in "New Manhattan" proves fidelity to the original source marerial is a non issue ..it just looks like hollywood pandering to the race card yet again, afraid western audiences wont take to japenese leads or a movie without a big draw name

They won't.

If they got Japanese leads then you'd only complain that they're making them speak English.

well yes, I prefer subtitles to dubbing ..and this isnt just about white actors ..the setting is western as well ..the whole point about New Tokyo is lost ..not to mention it was japan who destroyed manhatten

Honestly, I would think that setting it in Tokyo with Japanese actors would barely rank on the bizarre-o-meter next to the rest of the movie.

Man... I watched Akira and Ghost in the Shell on the same night... many years ago. And Akira was certainly the least enjoyable one for me.

That anime was ****ing confusing.

It can be if you're watching for the first time. You really gotta pay attention to the dialogue to find out what's going on exactly.

I just watched it last night, and i think it can be done easily. The characters can be mimicked pretty easily by real humans, the design isn't that far off lol. And New Manhatten? Who cares? It's not like Neo Tokyo looked anything like tokyo in real life lol, they had buildings that was thousands of stories tall...New Manhatten wouldn't be that big of a difference from Tokyo minus the japanese billboards/signs n stuff.

I'm more concerned about what they'll include in the story and how good the special effects will be.

I'm sure the story will be almost totally different :|

that may not be a bad thing. The manga storly line and the movie storlyline of Akira were fairly different, but the manga's storyline was much more in depth and over all better. But it's hard to take 6 volumes and condense it into 2 hours of film. I just hope they don't butcher it.

you are dead inside

lol what? If you didn't understand what i meant by my post you should read the comic or watch the movie. Neo Tokyo looked nothing like real life Tokyo. So having the live action movie in "New Manhatten" wouldn't make that big of a difference from the actual movie since they're both set in a megapolis.

But Akira is confusing because they ran out of running time and did the good ol' Anime 'just say some shit in a white void and get it over with' cop-out. Ghost in the Shell was confusing because it was using big words and being really smug.

Get past that, and the picture is clear enough on both hands. Akira is just a slobber-on-your-chin action movie with not-exactly the best fight-scene dialogue in history (Kaneda! Tetsuo! Kaneda! etc.). Ghost in the Shell is just a schizophrenic film featuring too much soul-less 'it's ok because it's an illustrated cyborg breast' nudity. The original GitS wasn't even that popular in Japan from what I've heard, it's just a classic in the west because back in the 90s, people took what little was out there...

A Live-Action Akira sounds interesting, particularly if they're using the Manga and avoiding the... void. But it will suck because mostly everything does anyway.

The film is set in a New Manhattan, a city rebuilt by Japanese money after being destroyed 31 years ago.

Aww crap, I was afraid of this. Well, even if it's americanized I guess there's still a small chance of it not sucking although I'm very doubtful.

Yeah I have to say I wasn't too impressed with GitS considering the amount of hype it got O_o

Although I've only seen the original movie.

I have faith in this movie since Otomo is involved, and also the fact that the storyline is from the manga, not the condensed storyline from the movie.

Can't wait till it comes out.
