Five Finger Death Punch
War is the Answer

this cd is powerful, loud, and has plenty of variety. totally blew me away and is a prime example of how to make a modern metal album

I CHANGE MY ANSWER

The xx - xx

Mainly because it's not my type of music really and I didn't expect to like it but god damn it's impressed me a lot

Atreyu - Congregation of the Damned

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion

Honorable mentions

Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Blue Record - Baroness
Heavy Ghost - D.M. Stith

Muse - The Resistance

The more I listened to it, the more I started liking it.

I don't know a lot of music I like(unfortunately :( ) so this is the only one I can think of.

I'm.. I'm in love.

Their stuff is pretty awesome, right? I first heard it playlisted on my radiostation, and even though it's not reallly my cup of tea/music, there's a really compelling aesthetic to all their tracks, the sort of minimal, precise, clinical grooves and drum machine patterns.

FUN FACT, the school they went to was also attended by Hot Chip, Four Tet, and Burial. MY OH MY

I've heard some Four Tet. Pretty good stuff.

KA holy damn, your sentiments reflect my own. I was not expecting to like this.

Just listened to this after both your recommendation and NME/Pitchfork's glowing reviews:

Amazing. Going to run out to boxing day sales to pick up the album. I owe you a night of passionate, steamy lovemaking.

Hey no problem! I think they're playing Laneways but I'm not sure exactly where you're from so I don't know if you've missed it or not but I WILL SEE THEM AT LANEWAYS

IT WILL BE RAD

yeah, used to be Them Crooked Vultures, but then i picked this bad boy up:

im a major pink floyd fan and i hate cover albums, so im actually kinda shocked i love this album so much, but it just blows me away how much the flaming lips were able to make it their own. it doesnt sound like Dark Side at all, its like its own entity which shares the lyrics of dark side.

Thanks for reminding me about this one.

Which reminds me...I wouldn't say that it's my favorite album of the year, but it definitely accomplished something on an aural and aesthetic level. Bravo to The Flaming Lips for going from their poppiest, most mediocre album to their most experimental album of excellence.

Flaming Lips - Embryonic

I can't forget about all my friends who have released amazing albums to Portland's local indie scene.

I encourage all of you to check out these bands:

Fall on the Honey Clouds

Kinda influenced by early 90s indie rock like Pavement. Very powerpop in some ways. This album is mostly happy and uplifting, but there are some dark moments. These guys practice right across from my house, and they're awesome people.

South China - Washingtons

Beautiful strings-based folk music. A lot of great instrumentation on this album. I'd say Jerusha's vocals remind me of Norah Jones a little bit, except not in a jazzy atmosphere at all.

Huak - Secret Trees EP
secret_trees.jpg

Post-punk, math-rock. Very influenced by bands like Fugazi (opened for their bassist last year) and Mission of Burma (opened for them earlier this year). These guys are all in their early 20s. Awesome to hang out with.

All of the albums are available through http://peapodrecordings.com/

I agree. It's Blitz was awesome.
I actually prefer both of their two previous albums more, but even YYY's weakest release is still miles above what most other groups could ever hope to achieve.

yeah yeah yeahs talk: i saw them perform all of fever to tell the other week. it was glorious. so was karen-o.

^ How are they live? I wish they would get their asses over to Sweden already.

Seeing the YYYs next week at Sunset Sounds.

RIDICULOUSLY PUMPED

very good, though it was all quite rushed as they came out about 20 mins late. they were meant to be play fever to tell then do a setlist of other songs from other albums, but i believe they finish straight after ftt.

karen-o wore this sparkly red dress and it was hot.

This would be a tie between Regina Spektor - Far
and Florence & The Machine - Lungs

I've just had this on for the past half hour, it's very very lovely.

Either Biffy Clyro Only Revolutions or 30 Seconds To Mars This Is War.

This is my favourite album of the year, which is not normally my kind of music:-

Florence And The Machine - Lungs

With Arctic Monkeys - Humbug, Kasabian - The West Rider.... and Jamie T - Kings And Queens amongst my other best of.

My winamp library tells me I have about 6 albums from last year, heh.

Gotta go to Karnivool - Sound Awake, even though I just discovered the band. Runners up are Between the Buried and Me - The Great Misdirect and Isis - Wavering Radiant (who I actually put way above the former two bands, just wasn't especially taken with this album).
