Alcatraz connected to HL2's plot?

Aww man, that would f$#%*$ ROCK!

dis - i now know what part is talked about. thanks.
still, i don't really think that's the sea... looks more like a lake to me.

btw, that jump across the broken part of the bridge seems HUGE, seen from the place talked about in dis's post.

btw2: has anyone noticed there's no HUD in the total buggy vid? not even when gordon gets out of the vehicle and uses the weapons.

I agree; it looks like a lake to me.

On second thoughts, Gordon'd make a crap tour guide. He's mute and can only communicate through crowbar.

@bel - there's no HUD in the Kleiner vid either. I think it's just something for the vid - I wouldn't read anything into it.

el chi,
yeah that's true... but somehow in the Kleiner vid it didn't feel strange at all, while in the buggy vid it kinda does. especially when picking up the rocket launcher.

From PC GAMER UK:

"Other Half-Life 2 environments that Valve have revealed to us include a massive prison complex, which from interior and exterior shots seems to be modelled to some extent on Alcatraz."

While this doesn't confirm it isn't Alcatraz, I believe it definitely is not said famous prison.

The game is confirmed to be set mainly in City 17, which is in Europe, nowhere near San Fran :) Although a smaller area of the game could be set in and around Alcatraz, I highly doubt they'd copy directly off a landmark, rather being merely inspired by it.

I read that Valve won't be teleporting the player anywhere, as they want the game to flow continuously, and also no sea-based vehicles will be at the player's discretion so I highly doubt you'll be travelling to Alcatraz.

quoting Tequila:
"no sea-based vehicles will be at the player's discretion so I highly doubt you'll be travelling to Alcatraz."

well, you don't need to travel a sea when there is no sea... ;)

your other arguments seem ok to me :D

It does look exceedingly similar to Alcatraz but that's what "being based on" means.

Althought, a thought just occured. I don't recall anyone saying that City 17 will be the ONLY location you visit in Half Life 2, maybe the City 17 bit is only near the start of the game and that's it. We don't actually know.

It is fesible that at one point you go to Alcatraz for some reason.

Although, one of the previews mentioned that the Combine were using the prison as some headquarters, so it must be near City 17.

And thanks for giving me credit for the picture but I didn't make it, unfortuately. Heh.

quoting Feath:
"And thanks for giving me credit for the picture but I didn't make it, unfortuately."
yeah i just called it 'Feath's pic' so i wouldn't have to post the link each time. and to refer to the pic you posted of course. :)

dimitri: we don't know.

tredo: he killed someone. that's baaad.

He killed SOMEONE? He killed a ton of american soldiers! The US would be pissed as hell at him for that. Although the Gman would get him off the hook for that. Reaally OT but anyone notice that Gordon wears glasses and no helmet? What happens it a headcrab jumps on his face and crushes his glasses? And if he wears no helmet how does he have the HUD?

the only reason i can see that alcatraz is cool with HL2 is that thers a prison level or maybe they used some alcatraz architecture

Gordon couldnt start at the prison level. Considering that it seems you are fairly advanced weapon-wise(pharamone grenades, I think they come later in the game. Plus there's a surplus of enemies with guns a plenty there. Not enough pistols). I'm betting that you do go through the dried-up sea to get [insert important plot character/device] back from the prison.

Unless the prison area in the E3 trailer was purely a mock-up.

The name of the level in that screenshot -- E3_Prison would indicate that it is either a mock-up or a modification of the level to take out certain goodies or hide what will really happen to the player. I'd vote a modification, since I couldn't see them doing that much work just to throw away.

It will be interesting to see the differences in what happens in the real game vs. what is in the videos.

they showed that boat to, maybe like u guys said u start in a prison, and then right as ur about to escape you get owned and wake up on a boat to europe, im wrong, but im trying.

I notice (correct me if I'm wrong) in that prison screen, a combine is hiding behind a matress for cover..... .... ...

Yes, a number of Combine are hiding being mattresses

What's your point?

Well.., I sure as hell wouldn't use a matress for cover from anything except for a tornado...

I'd like to see them crouch the whole time with a bush that they're holding out in front of them, moving side to side every few minutes in discrete fashion and shooting through the leaves.

They may not have been using it for cover against bullets. They may have been using it for cover against an antlion attack.

Not that it did much good because they were overwhelmed.

the only thing i wanna hide behind against bullets in a mounted 50 cal

This is only somewhat related, but I think that the ocean dries up during the game. In the docks vid, there seems to be plenty of water around. Then a pic in PC Gamer's unveiling of HL2 shows a boat with lots of people on it waiving to you and the boat is stranded in a half-dried body of water. Then of course you've got the buggy vid in the fully dry seabed. Just a thought.
Oh, and i think the prison level is only based on Alcatraz for reasons others have previously mentioned.

I would think the Combine HQ would be as far away as possible from City 17, which could basically be the front lines in a war against the survivors or something. You definitely don't want your military HQ close to the enemy.

Though I think that's a good point, the Combine may be using Alcatraz as a base of some sort. Never thought of it that way.

Maybe there's a Combine equivalent of the Nihilanth in Alcatraz...?
