In a recent interview with Doug Lombardi one thing that he stated really stirred me up.

Vossey.com: At the Alcatraz presentation, will we finally get a chance to see a playable version of Half-Life 2?

DL: You'll have to be there, to see.

Now if I'm getting this right, Alcatraz is a prison... so they will definatly presenting HL2 there in one form or another. I'm more intrested in the playable version thing.

The way he worded the answer makes be beleive that there will be a playable version or at least some new videos.

Also does anyone have any other information to when this might take place?

Thought I read somewhere Sep 30th. But really, unless you're part of the gaming press and are going to be there, who cares? We'll all pretty much have our copies by then and won't give a flip if Gabe is showing it to people in a prison.

I care only b/c I'm so close to Alcatraz right now. It wouldn't take more than an hour for me to get there - just need a pass to get in...

Something tells me you'd need to be either a Valve employee or a member of the gaming press to get in---say IGN, Gamespot, PC Gamer, or Computer Gaming World.

"Hellooo, im mister..., ..., doug lombardi, and I would like to get in"

If you read my most recent "INFO FROM VALVE" reply, you will see I got some info that states the Alcatraz thing is absolutly real however there is no information about it. :hmph:

Does anyone know when it is? Is it on release date? Is it closed to the press? I live a good 40 minutes away from San Fransisco and I am desperate to go!

same here synergy, I live in San Ramon (off 680 South of Napa/etc), and really want to go. Hope some info comes out about it!

if you even could, would you really want to go in alcatraz? -_-
seems kind of an odd place to show off a game, even with the similar jail scene. they could just use pictures.

I have been there twice. It is a museum and it is actually a very cool place to visit. Lots of history on that island and the only way to get to it is by a 20 minute ferry ride. It also is ment to hold lots of ppl so an exibit there would be possible with lots of ppl.

I can't wait

I reckon this is the launch party, so it will be cocktail sausages and cheese cubes all round.

Seeing as though hl2 sees gordon in a prison, I can see why they choose Alcatraz, it being the most famuos prison in the world and all.

OH yeah baby its gonna turn into the rock and crap and terrorists with striders will appear and nicolas cage will kick some ass and along comes the irish old guy and he'll get some people to watch him blow stuff up in half life 2 :O

Scottish. Sean Connery is Scottish.

*Guests are waiting outside Alcatraz before the presontation*

*Doors open and Sean Connnery appers*

Sean Connery: Welcome to The Rock.

Nobody said it was Connery. he said 'some Irish guy'.
Valve are using it as a demonstration of their game's realism-by activatting a resonace cascade at the press junket and setting alien horrors on spotty writers. And anyone who reads PC Gamer will know what that means... Keiron and Jim die.

How many nerds from San Fran do you think will drown on the day of the Alcatraz presentation?

All of them... they can't make it to the island with their poor endurance and the fact that they probably can't swim since they have never even seen water in large enough quantities (except in games) in which to swim.

What if the reason they chose a prison is because that's where the game starts off - with Gordon waking up in a prison. And then you have to break out of it. And why Alcatraz? Sure, it's probably the most famous prison in world (well maybe just the US), but it seems weird to me that they'd want a launch party at that specific prison unless it's in the game - but I could be completely wrong. Maybe it was just a high profile place to hold it and doesn't really have any significance, but that doesn't really seem Valve's style to me. What do you guys think?

As far as a playable version goes, I'm certain that they could have one if they want to at that point. The game should be out by then or soon afterwards. I would expect them to have one, but I don't care too much since I'll be playing the game at home around the same time that the event occurs.

I think it is just a very famous prison relatively close to Valve HQ... no significance other than there being a prison in the game.
How would Gordon get from Alcatraz to eastern Europe?

A boat? A plane? Teleportation? All possibilities, with the last two most likely, but you're probably right in that it may not have an real significance with respect to the story of the game.

This is rumour control. Here are the facts. Valve's aclatraz is in city 17.

It's known as a publicity stunt, and it's a damn good one if you ask me.

man an alcatraz launch party would soo rock my pants.

I mean just think of all those ppl just getting ready to get a peak at HL2 and then all of a sudden in true "the rock" style, combine soldiers rappel(maybe not spelled right) down from the roof...ROCK!!

Word. Pretty original too. They'll get a crap load of press from it.

It's worth noting that the game has been in playable form for quite some time, and installing it to a PC that they could bring to the press conference would be a trivial matter.

Um, yes, but still, I believe most of those in attendance would nontheless be overjoyed to play it. And anyway, aside from the build at E3, the only other playable version has been under lock and key at Valve.

^^^
I only mentioned it because people seemed skeptical that Valve could get a playable version ready in time for the press party.
