Alien Swarm?

Well damn, that was superb. I'd easily pay money for it.

It's pretty simple and repetitive, but it's alright.

I want to plaaaaaaay! ;(

Still waiting to hear from the devs about my problem or so they can atleast tell me "Hey bro, your computer can't run this shit sry." so that I can atleast stop obsessing over the game and go back to L4D2. :frown:

Okay, after playing through it three times and determining Jaeger with the Vindicator is the most OP thing ever, I want more campaigns god darmit.

It's just my bandwidth is really low, especially my upload speed.

Well, I'll give it a shot. Haven't played a multiplayer game in years.

You really don't want to play it single player, bro.

It's really really dull unless you have friends.

You get an alien parasite hat in TF2 for one of the achievements :p

Yeah, I meant give the multiplayer a shot. And what is this 'friends' thing you speak of? Does that come with the game or do you have buy those separately? I haven't used Steam in several years. Do friends come with Steam?

Man this game is tough on Insane. But then again, it's Insane.

I thought it was tough on hard... except I was playing with a bunch of level 1 and 2 people who apparently thought "hey let's start on hard... we think we're good at anything." I'll try it again today and maybe get some people who don't just stand in one place infinitely wasting ammo and getting me killed while I try to move forward.

ya mine's not showing up for some reason :(

anyway, fun little game! it's a real challenge on the higher difficulties and I love the fact that there are so many items to unlock

can't believe they decided to release this for free... I would've paid for it :p

I love you Valve :naughty:

Yeah, this sucks for single player, which is all I do. Good job I got Alien Breed: Impact.

So this is mainly a multiplayer title? Damn, I too am more of a Singleplayer guy. Nuts. :( Ah well, at least Valve were cool enough to release this for free. I know Microsoft would easily charge $10-$20 for this.

Man I love this game. Can't believe its free.

I started off level 1, by the time I successfully finished one entire campaign online I was level 20.

The only issue I have is the weapon balancing. The whole point of secondary weapon is obsolete when you could simply replace secondary weapons with an ammo cache.

I tried to master the sniper rifle, just like in L4D (in L4D, i would usually score the highest number of kills due to the piercing effect, which most people overlook). Though in the end I went back to the vindicator. The secondary function of the sniper rifle is useless, all it does is allow you to see into a birds eye view scope.

Still, great game overall. This is definitely good marketing if they are trying to lure people into the future installments of this game.

I would give this game a 8/10, but considering the fact that it's free, it deserves a 9/10.

Wow free is only worth one point? Free is basically a multiplier. Even if a game is absolute shit you can say 'well at least it was free' and suddenly it's worthwhile. I guess you just have a ton of money chilling out and free isn't as awesome as it is for normal people. I think this game is gonna be a lot of fun once people start getting good maps out there. I'm going to start working on one soon... maybe tonight... maybe later this week.

I found hard pretty easy. My friends and I gave up on insane so we could come back to it once we leveled. We were able to beat all of hard on the first try for each map, huge difference between the difficulties.

The game cheats against you on insane man. I was playing medic and ended up dying within a minute just because the swarm would never stop spawning and end up overwhelming you when you try to reload. The placement of the quick reload bar is GODAWFUL and you never really wanna take your eyes off the screen or you end up running into 50 swarms and proceed to become a new alien baby mama.

This game is really tough... i love it though. My only problem is that i can play L4D2 on max settings and this thing apparently has even more shit going on at once, cause i can't get over 30 FPS.

Yeah, difficulty varies widely depending on the skill of the players.. I played through with some guys on my first run on hard, and got to very end of the last level till our host decided to drop on us, and then played with some other friends and we had trouble on normal.

Needless to say, they were not very good.

Yeah I think someone should make a mod that puts the quick reload right in the middle of the screen nice and big. I usually get funked looking at reloading. There are definitely spots where, if you don't move forward, a constant stream of aliens come at you. I think they may never stop which explains why you get a lot of random aliens when you backtrack. I think it was just difficult because I was playing with 3 people who just started and didn't know what they were doing and decided hard was the best place to try and learn.

Just played through the whole campaign with Nitre and Jimbo amongst others. Damn this is fun. I played as the engineer (mechanic? I forgot) and while my damage sucks, I did manage to play through all those hacking mini-games pretty fast :) We played on hard I think and that was pretty manageable although we did run into a bit of trouble in the end with facehuggers. Over all heaps of fun though.

EDIT Check out the RPS Verdict on Alien Swarm.

Made a couple of quick maps, the tile generator is loads of fun to play with. Still getting used to the whole "your rooms have no ceilings" thing but overall it's fun, except when hammer crashes for no apparent reason. I'm going to try my hand at making a test campaign later to get the feel for setting up proper missions that can be selected from the menu and not manually loaded from the console.

Tried playing with Shaker but this computer is way too slow to play it at a decent framerate. Got the hat though :p

Wish I could play it properly.

The matchmaking is driving me insane. I can't seem to get in a game anymore. It will either get stuck at establishing connection or give me an error message about failing after 10 retries. It worked fine yesterday.

fun times this evening

got to lvl 8 in one sitting

Use the console command "openserverbrowser" if you are having trouble with the matchmaking. It makes it much easier...

I just realized the character bonuses in this game limit you to a few weapons.

For example, the officer and the special weapons have their own bonuses to a specific weapon. Thus, there is no reason to use another weapon. Not to mention, the availability of an ammo cache as a secondary weapon means there is no need for an actual secondary weapon.

This game is still going to receive updates right? It'll be awesome if they could release a few new characters.

^Nice find.

I don't know what's so demanding in this game tbh, but I have to play on medium while L4D1 runs nicely on high and looks better. I think laziness in optimizing is the cause.

Yep, I have to play on low and it still chugs in parts. Kind of excusable they didn't put as much into playtesting as they would a retail title, considering. Anyway, knowing Valve's track record it'll no doubt be supported post-launch with a string of patches and (possibly) new content, so hopefully they tighten it up a bit in future.

Performance for me is excellent. There is one area in the whole game where I've had any slowdown. I'm not sure what the deal was as it didn't look like it should be slowing my framerate.
This is tons of fun.

Someone isn't playing medic ;)

Someone isn't playing medic ;)

Medics are boring, at least for me.

On insane, it almost becomes a requirement to have either 2 medics on a team or a full healing equipped medic (the "medigun" and the group heal med packs equipped).

Ironically, medics are the most important class of the entire game. You can't do without one on the team.

Medics are tough. You have to really have a team that is paying attention because you pretty much have no defenses. Melee almost guarantees you getting hit at least once and on hard and insane that can be pretty terrible.

As for the game running slowly, it only does that for me on that level where you have to burn all of the biomass. I'm not sure why either. I think one reason the game runs slow in general is because it lads the entire rendered map into memory and it is always displaying it even when you're not looking. The textures are kind of higher res than they need to be for the distance you view them from.

the entire rendered map into memory and it is always displaying it even when you're not looking.
Are you sure about that? Why couldn't they enable some kind of culling? Surely you're mistaken.

How is that ironic?

Medics are boring. Most people in my games don't want to play medic, but we can't start the game unless we have a medic. That is my opinion.

Don't care whether the use of the word irony is correct, too many definitions of that word anyways.

You mean too many incorrect ones.~

Anyway I don't mind playing medic. What I do mind is people running the **** around like sperglords while I'm trying to cure their infection. Christ, what do they think is going to happen, the aliens will be repelled by their utter lack of brain activity?
