I just want to know if you do or do not believe in aleins.

Here's my logic, if you have any interest in space you'd know how friggin huge our galaxy is, but it's a spec compared to the other 100 million+ galaxies, so that makes our solar system almost non-existent compared to the whole universe.

So, if you do not believe in aliens, with all those galaxies, considereing how small we are just to our own galaxy, your telling me that in this gigantic existence, that there are no other races? There's not even one little cell somewhere else?

I for one think it's impossible that there isn't another intelligent life out there, there has to be like 1000 billion+ races.

So, whats your opinion?

How egotistical would we have to be to believe that we're the only form of inteligent life out there? Sure there's "aliens" but we're so impossibly far away from each other that we'll never be able to communicate. Ever.

Yes. Anyone who thinks we're the only ones in the universe is gravely mistaken, and hugely egotistical.

But then again, it's entirely possible we're the first species with big brainzors.

We still have 100 billion years until our sun burns out, by that time we'll probably have built eneough space ships to go to another planet before ours has expired, I think our pollution will almost kill us, we'll turn it all around and get off this rock!

Plus, by then we'll have evolved a bit more, maybe we'll have like 4 arms or be able to breathe underwater or something! cool!

Unless either they or us come up with something similar to an alcubierre drive

I'm guessing there is the possibility of some kind of life on a far away planet, but I doubt there is any intelligent life forms out there.

The universe is an estimated 10 billion years old (Probably more) There had to have been earlier life forms that evolved more than we did, with more intelligence.

Technology is still evolving rapidly, I think eventually we'll be able to travel extreme distances to see aliens.

Well, naturally...but that's so obvious I didn't feel like insulting the other members intelligence by bringing it up. :X

drakes equation still predicts there are currentley 1000 intelligent species in our galaxy, and at least one within 100 light-years from us. But drake's equation takes alot of leeway for the "probability of radio technology" variable. Somehow I really doubt species would develop radio, and even if they did the time frame would be incredibly short before they either blew themselves up or went 100% fiber-optic and direct laser transmission. But I beleive 100% in another form of life out there, and in my opinion there has, is or will be another intelligent species out there.

We find more planets every day, and with the billions of stars out there, each with the posibility of producing planets and , there must be at least another one out there with intelligent life. The odds are so bad of there not being another one I can make that assumption.

Bitches ain't shit.

However, I find the most likely reasoning behind our existence is we are infact AI inside a computer program, built by an alien species, similar to ours, who could even be the same AI that built us.

"THE UNIVERSE:
4. Population

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination."

Go have cyber on AIM. The forum doesn't need to have anymore gay infestation.

you guys are gay
We're not gay.
We just enjoy participating in gay cyber-sex.
There is a distinct subtle yet important difference.

...Topic. Derailed.

We go from Alien existence to Gay cybersex to Pes supposedly not being a guy.

All in 2 pages.

Welcome to the HL2.net Forums.

That must be a record, thread de-rail in the 14th post, congratulations! you get a COOKIE!!!!!!!

EDIT: Damn you, xlucidx, you beat me to it..

I like reading wacky Sci-Fi and seeing what kind of funky theories authors come up with regarding the nature of space.

I recently read a book called 'A Fire Upon The Deep' by Vernor Vinge in which he envisaged the Milky Way as being split up into different 'zones' of space. Earth is buried deep in the slow zone where faster than light travel is not possible, and it is next to impossible to travel significant distances or make contact with other races.

However, every now and again a species might emerge from the Slow Zone and expand into a zone called the Beyond, where faster-than-light travel is possible the farther you travel off the Y-axis, and accordingly some truly insane technology and AI becomes possible. In this area of the galaxy many alien civilisations interact with eachother, and trade, and rise and fall, but to them a planet like Earth in the Slow Zone may as well be at the bottom of the Mariana Trench - impossible to contact or locate, and so obscure that it may as well be make believe.

Then you get to the very outer reaches of the galaxy, go beyond the 'Beyond', into the 'Transcend' and then shit gets liek zomgwtf. God-like consciousnesses tootle about in this area.

None of this is even slightly based in fact, of course, but it's fun to think about. My answer's Yes btw.

Wow, this thread sodomised itself in the time it took me to compose this post.

It would be a pretty big waste if Earth was the only planet that supports life in the universe.

And if it is, we're certainly not doing the best job at keeping it alive.

Edit - Oooor maybe we're the "life starters" Oooh, this will make an interesting poem.

No one really takes care of the planet because they figure nothing bad will happen in their lifetime so why care? But with the way things are going right now some bad shit can be heading our way pretty soon.

Or perhaps we're the species that will go around screwing everyone else over until we're the only ones left...
Kinda like the borg. But more screwed up.

That'd be a hell of a lot funner, even.

Edit - And yeah, there's no 'good and evil'. Just purpose, and goal. If believing in good is your goal, hey, more power to you. No goal is better than others, some are simply easier to accomplish.

There are out there, its just that they are so far, we wont see them anyways.

I'll go with the rest in that its statistically impossible that no one else is out there. And I hesitate to say that we won't ever meet them, because every century we turn around and laugh at how stupid people were in the last one.

No.

Intelligence is one path of evolution.

The chances of intelligent life on another planet is equal to the chances of a creature with a trunk (elephant) on another planet.

Seems it'd be rather random to me.

Intelligence is just a path of evolution, but don't forget: other life in the universe would exist on another planet with many branches of evolution just like earth. And intelligence is a very useful branch for something like that to take.

If we came across dolphins on another planet I'd be apt to call them intelligent.

So are trunks.
