Will I see all the effects in Half Life2 with a G4 ti4200?

If not what type of effects will I not see!!!!!

I have no idea as the game has not yet shipped.

Simply put - no, none of the dx9 effects like fresnal, hdr etc.

There is a comparison list somewhere taken from a magazie - I'll try and find it.

!!!!!!!!!!!!omg!!!!!!!!I can't stop!!!!!!!!typing these damn!!!!!!!!!

i also have a ti4800 se (its like a 4200 i think).
i have seen the two screenshots showing the difference of the dx9 and dx8.1 but its not that great a difference.
Maybe in motion it will be greater

geforce 4 based cards (except the geforce4mx range) will run HL in directx8 which is fine and dandy :) but your will lose out on some of the directx9 beauties which you will notice more when playing the game than looking at screenshots...

if you want good directx9 performance at a cheap price get a 9600pro

AMAZING value and AMAZING performance!

i myself have just ordered a 9800 non pro and i cant wait for it to arrive :)

TBH from what i've heard it's really not worth upgrading from your Ti card to something newer. The Ti series are good cards with full DX8 support. The main things that you might lose are HDR lighting etc (also known as shininess :) ). You may even find that Valve give you the option to turn some of the DX9 effects on with a DX8 card as there is no reason why the effects could not be performed in software.
If you can afford it and have less than a DX8 card i would upgrade, to a radeon 9600 (amazingly cheap for what it offers, saw some in UK for £85), 9800 or 9800XT.

usually around $110-120, not much at all. incredibly value. I plan to get one to replace my GF4 MX 440 (don't hurt me!)

you can still play Hl2 with a DX8 card, it's just you won't get some of the purdy graphical features that DX9 will handle.

What is this in response to? And HL2 isn't 'DX9', it just 'fully supports DX9', but then of course it fully supports DX8,7 and 6 also.

Phew, my Geforce 2 pro 64meg can run it still, but at pretty crap detail.

god damn... i hate it when people are stupid and try posting...

HL2 can run with a directx7 based card... you will just not get any directx8 and directx9 features...

a 9600pro will set u back about £130 and it is a FANTASTIC CARD i know 2 people that have them and i am amazingly impressed by them!

also somebody mentioned the 9600 for about 85£ which is good too

only difference between that and the pro is clock speeds so you could try getting one of those and overclocking it... if you want to reach pro speeds :)

TheRook

p.s. if you do want to overclock try rage3d.com

I really dont know currency.

How much would it be in Us currency or australian currency?

no, a lot of the graphical features wil be stripped because the TNT2 can't handle them. But it will still play the game, just at a DX6 level.

Or, you could buy a 9500 PRO and flash it's bios to meet up with specifications of a 9700 PRO.

It has been indicated that Half-Life 2 running DirectX 8 will look a lot like what was seen in the E3 movies. You'll be primarily missing out on the fancy lighting effects as those are DirectX 9 features.

No as your Video card can’t handle the DirectX 9 effects, However it will run at every good frame rate with everything turned up in Direct X 8.1 mode. Your better of with the card you have than the low end FX or mid range FX cards.

I can't wait to be gobsmacked when i see the difference between my tnt2 and a 9800xt.

/me prepares for severe gobsmacking.

there really isnt a 200$ difference between dx 8.1 and 9, ALL OF YOU GET OVER IT.

stfu, my GeForce256 ownz all DX9 cards.

I hope to run hl2 with all settings on high and 6X AA and 16X AF

I have tried max AA/AF with one, it looks like crap and ran even crappier in Morrowind :p

Btw, I wonder why the word "Hardware" on a forum link is so hard to understand... Do people think its about cars? Or maybe weapons, that's some serious hardware.

The Radeon 9500 is a bit of a gamble, and you'll need good cooling to keep it's temperature down and clock speeds up. If you *really* want a Radeon 9700 pro, buy one. I'm running it, and it's only a little slower than the 9800.

For your information, GF4 Ti cards aren't DX8, they're DX8.1, a pretty big difference. They'll run HL2 just fine, the problem lies with the FX cards running DX9 or the special designed path, not the older cards.

DX8.1 supports fresnel water, will look slightly better on a dx9 compliant card though.

DX8.1 will have about 90% of the HL2 effects and shaders. For the moment that is because new shaders and effects will be created, exclusively for DX9 hardware. So if you have a DX8.1 card right now, it's not worth upgrading to a newer one really to run HL2 well, but you should in the future.

what are you talking about? the 9500 is just as good as, and many times at same clock speeds, better; it's just another way for ATi to make cheaper cards and throw out the 9500 altogether

now whoever said the gf2 pro is a dx6 card, it actually fully supports dx7; maybe you're thinking of a tnt2 or voodoo3

Cool dx7 :D

Edit: what will the dx7 do in the game?

What wont i get like fancy lights and water ect ect?
