what is corpeal?

Well done, dude. I had missed a few words at the end of a few of the qoutes. Louis has a tendecy to drift off, apparently.

Regarding the cords, they're probably referring to the vortigaunts you killed in the first game. The cords that were "cut" probably refer to the ones that died and thus, their conscious minds were severed from the rest of the collective mind.

That corporeal form is interesting. Are they just amazed to see you in person (like seeing a celeb) or do they know you were hovering somewhere outside normal existence for the past 15 years or so?

Overall, good observations. Some notes:

"npc_vortigaunt.vmono_09" "We cannot forget those whose cords you cut. Forgiveness is not ours to bestow. " what cords? why forgive?
In reference to all the Vortigaunts Gordon killed. Cut cords as a metaphor for death.
"npc_vortigaunt.vmono_13" "We are there still, in observance of your final stroke. " they still are frozen in the time?
Theres also "We still see you in Black Mesa". Its just how they think. They are 'timeless'.
"npc_vortigaunt.vmono_19" "Far distant eyes look out through yours. " gman using you as a pawn
Can also be taken as a reference to us, the player.
"npc_vortigaunt.vmono_22" "How often have we slipped our yoke, only to find it choking us again. " huh?
The control collars.
Main Entry: 1yoke
Function: noun
3 a (1) : an oppressive agency (2) : SERVITUDE, BONDAGE
"npc_vortigaunt.vmono_23" "Let this war end in either total victory or our extinction. No further compromise shall we allow. " waht?
Give me liberty or give me death!

"Could you but see the eyes inside your own, the minds in your mind, you would see how much we share."

"How many are there in you? Whose hopes and dreams do you encompass? "

Remember breen talked of 'host' bodies? What if freeman is just a host body for something else? Or maybe he is host to many people? :O

Maybe G-man is the last reminants of a long dead race destroyed by the combine?

they "still see you"...they remember you
I just think that time is meaningless to them... no moment is the present. atemporal nonlocal etc etc...... I feel that way after consuming enough of your screen name :dozey:

I have thought the same thing!

Freeman clearly is a host body,.. for all the people playing the game.

Can someone tell me exactly where and how you find this vortigaunt roasting headcrabs in a sewer. a screenie of the entrance to the tunnel would be handy because I've looked all over Water Hazard and haven't found anything.

You shouldn't really have put your interpretations next to the bits of dialogue...

I mean, you did a good job of findind the code but don't spoil it with your bad suggestions... :S

hmmm...if the game involves us, i foresee a disappointing end. it just seems a waste of time explaining all the things in half life universe (combine, nihlanth dude, alyx and friends the whole thing) and then at the end have the G man say "gordon your a video game character and camera pans over to gordon he says something for the first time. we are separated from the feeling of being gordon and finally see the real gordon independant from ourselves. The G man explains that all this story, your life is a fake black mesa was just a place for gamers to have fun, it did well so u came back into existance and the end...see what i mean?

now if they could incorparate "us" as being a character/s in the half life 2 world and make it fit some how, then that would be a different story.

Edit: just remembered, Neverending Story did something like that and look how much ass that movie kicks. ATREYU! VALCOR!!!

what exactly is the "communion of the vortessence"

Well my half baked theory on this is…
Vort Essence. Two words made one… being that they are of one mind they feel more like a communion of essences then individuals. I also like that it resembles the word vortices. Many eastern metaphors that seek to describe a state like they experience describe us as vortices in a river… it is impossible to tell where a vortex starts or stops in context to the entire river but you still know it is something unique and therefore nameable. Word.

ooh...interesting.

I kinda see them like the bugger queen in the Ender's game series. they are a collective intelligence. what one sees, they all see. they think as if they ARE the vorts that Gordon killed, and they think as if they are the vorts that saw Gordon kill Nihilanth, etc. It's a really interesting way to think of them. I really think the vorts will play a very integral role in HL3. It seems like they are resentful of their slavery to the controllers, Nihilanth, etc. and are determined not to repeat the same mistake.

"npc_vortigaunt.vmono_23" "Let this war end in either total victory or our extinction. No further compromise shall we allow."

I think this illustrates what I just said. Notice the FURTHER compromise part.

Actually all vorts go through the same scripted dialoge. You meet a few vortigons during the game, and none of them say anything different. Much like the rebels. From my experience it seems that all of the rebels randomly go through the same set of lines (albeit in different recorded voices). From an out of game perspective, it's wasted time coding some random people to say unique things when you might never talk to the people. From an in game perspective, perhaps it's evidence of how the people are being affected by the stuff put in their water? Maybe it's making them more like the vortigons. You know, communal mind and all that jazz.

Here's my thoughts on some vort quotes
"Far distant eyes look out through yours." A reference to the players of the game who see through Gordon Freeman's eyes. Something secret steers us both. We shall not name it." Both are bound by the dimensions of the game. Their actions are dictated by outside forces. For Gordon, it's us. For the vorts, it's their AI. "What seems to you a sacrifice is merely, to us, an oscillation. We do not fear the interval of darkness." A reference to being able to save/load games. Death isn't really an obstacle, it just means that you have to reload the game. The intervals of darkness refer to the times when you're not playing Half Life. "How many are there in you? Whose hopes and dreams do you encompass?" "Could you but see the eyes inside your own, the minds in your mind, you would see how much we share." Again, a reference to the players.

Yeah, I loved Neverending Story. With the continued minigames relating to the Half Life storyline that Valve is talking about releasing through Steam, I see further coincidences between the Neverending Story and Half Life.

buggers. that's totally what I was thinking too. Like how they both hate you for murdering their kin and love you for freeing them...

from some of the later sound bits listed it seems like there were supposed to be some parts in hl2 were they fought along side you but never made the cut.

BTW i think vortecessence is just the vortiguant equivalent of saying humanity.

Yeah that would be implied but what I was saying… only they are a communion of “humanity” because they experience all minds at once.

I don't think it's reference is SOLELY to the player, but the Laidlaw definitely does seem to be implementing strong themes of control that are reflected both in the game in the form of the story and out of the game, in the form of us, the player. Valve has made alot of focus on the concept of the player, so it would definitely fit.

In essensce, it's a lot like Hitchcock's "Rear Window," where Jimmy Stuart watches all his neighbors. It was Hitchcock's way of letting the audience see a reflection of themselves, a kind of voyeurism.
