I'm asking you what do you reckon are the greatest ten games ever made. But bear in mind it can be on any system, in any genre, from any year and most importantly it can be a game you haven't played. From the reviews, thoughts and general estimation it can be a game you may admire without haven't played it. But of course it can be one you played to death. So it can be a very varied list. And that's the fun side of it. I wait with anticipation. Oh yeah... :)
And please state year, machine, genre and whether you played it or not, if you can. Thanks.

  1. Mafia (PC - 2002) [3rd person]
Simply the best interactive experience ever. Great story, perfect portion of realism, good graphics (although not the best), great gameplay.... I actually missed 2 days of class to play this one.
  2. Homeworld (PC - 1999) [
The RTS game Series for me. I had tried out Age of Empires and liked it, a good review showed me the way to Homeworld... Who never wished to rule the Universe ?
With breathtaking graphics and story for the time. The 2nd coming was good, not as good tho (first = always the best :p)
  3. Diablo 2 (PC - 2000 launch / 2002 play)
I thought RPG's sucked. Until this came. The story was basic, graphics weren't the best but.... it had a certain je ne sais quoi. Only KOTOR managed to take me to a similar place so far.
  4. Half-Life Series (PC - since 2000)
basically re-introduced me to videogames. I hadn't played anything on the PC (Mega Drive mostly) since Doom. Again, great story, great graphics, great gameplay.
Valve kept the crowbar up for the sequel. It showed that linearity has some time before it goes (contradiction I know)
  5. GTA series (PC/PS2/Xbox - since '97....)
For everything. It was just what the gaming industry needed, something telling them that non-linearity was the way to go. And it sold.. oh yes it sold...
  6. Max Payne Series (PC - since 2001)
I couldn't pass without it. Max Payne is my own personnal Jesus Christ.
  7. Halo (Xbox/PC - 2001)
Finnaly someone thought of making a good FPS after Half-life....with vehicles. Yes, I adored vehicles. I bowed to them.
  8. Operation Flashpoint Series (PC)
All the realism you ever wanted.... and some more..."The closer to War you'll ever get"
  9. Sonic Series (Sega) (since 1990...)
For taking me through uncountable days.

Honorable Mention :

  • Total War series
  • Hitman series

Played all.

Well I don't know a top 10, but I do know a top 3:

1. Half-life series, espessially Half-life 2.

HL2: greatest interactive entertainment out on pc's today. No competition even in sight.

2. Mafia.

Just like a movie, it really draws you in. I LOVED it.

3. Max payne series.

10) Heroes of Might & Magic III

I played some of these on my first pc back in 1993, it was top of the line back then hehe: a Compaq 486sx 25mhz running a whopping 4mb of ram!

1. Doom (PC)
The founding father of PC FPS. Opened the door for Shareware products and brought PC gaming into the mainstream. Should be on any top 10 list.

2. Civilization Series (PC)
Did to the strategy genre what Doom did for the FPS genre. Consistenly been a masterpiece in game design and entertainment.

3. System Shock (PC)
Great mix of RPG and FPS. Created some creepy and intense environments. Spawned a whole new crop of RPG related games.

4. The Sims (PC)
Opened up gaming to an even broader fan base. Brought in casual and hardcore gamers alike. A major leap in video game AI.

5. Half-Life Series (PC)
Redefined how stories were told in a FPS. Brought character interaction to a new level, and paved the way for many FPS games to come.

6. Super Mario Series (Nintendo)
The italian, mustache toting superstar that transformed the console generation. The highest selling video game in history. Brought gaming to the home of millions of casual gamers.

7. Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat (NES, SNES, SEGA, etc)
A tie in a genre that was once a major playing force for consoles. Both games started in the arcade and become some of the hottest selling fighters on home consoles. Lead the way for future greats like Soul Calibur and Tekken.

8. Grand Theft Auto Series (PC, PS2, Xbox)
Greated a whole new genre based on open ended gameplay. Provided the player a chance to play the game their own way. Ushered in hundreds of clones attempting to capitalize on their success.

9. Total War Series (PC)
Another giant leap for war strategy games. Defined city building and large scale combat into one genre. Created some of the most realistic real-time warfare on the PC.

10. Goldeneye (N64)
Brought recognition to the FPS genre on consoles. Redefined multiplayer on consoles. Lead the way for eventual Halo lan parties.

1. MGS2 (haven't played MGS3 yet so I can't say)
2. GTA:SA
3. MGS1
4. Perfect Dark
5. Max Payne 2
6. Half-Life 2
7. No One Lives Forever 2
8. Half-Life 1
9. Goldeneye
10. No One Lives Forever

To be accurate I would probably put GTA3 and VC in there too, but the games are so similar they're almost expansions so I left the lesser of the three out. I don't like rating games I haven't played yet, but if I did the list would have changed considerably. Also, haven't beat HL2 yet so it might get bumped up.

Half-Life 2
Deus Ex

Best 2 games ever.

Can't be bothered to do a top 10 list, too damn hard, sorry :)

But as for games I haven't played, and are supposedly the best ever: Mafia.
I'd like to play it, but can't put me to it because someone already spoiled the ending for me.... :(

In no order...

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Super Nintendo)
Super Mario World (Super Nintendo)
Secret of Mana (Super Nintendo)
Super Mario RPG (Super Nintendo)
Baldur's Gate II (PC)
Diablo II (PC)
Arcanum (PC)
Metroid Prime (Gamecube)
Half-Life Mods/Half-Life 2 (PC)
Starcraft (PC)

I've played all these and am basing this solely off of what I found to be the best games... not necessarily what was the best for the industry or whatever... I don't like doing that. :p

Half Life serie : Great, it took me a month just to finish Half Life, the second one seems short.

Max Payne 2 : Loved it, great game, music and story

Hitman 2: Verry good.

Half-Life 1 & 2 ( no need to comment )
Max Payne 1 & 2 ( i like the story , and the bullet time ;) )

2) Quake 2
3) Diablo
4) Diablo 2

It is looking like Number 10 will either be between Half-Life 2 or World of Warcraft.

5. Half-Life & Half-Life 2
6. Starcraft

Civ 2

a few more than 10, but couldn't leave any out :) - probably forgotten loads.

These are all games i have played

1. Half-Life series + mods - Needs no explanation :)
2. Halo series - Brought (and still brings) me loads of fun.
3. Doom series - Yes, and I am including Doom 3. That series is brilliant.
4. WoW - Best MMORPG
5. Call of Duty series - Best WWII series EVAR.
6. Age of Empires/Mythology series - Classics.
7. Quake Series - Classic.
8. WarCraft III - Good Gameplay and cool story.
9. StarCraft series - Possibly the king of strategy
10. Diablo II + exp - brought me hours (which could add up to days) of fun.

Bear in mind there are others that I wanted to put in there, but I had to choose between others, so i picked randomly. One of them is the Unreal (+ Tournament) series

1. Half-Life series (PC/PS2/X-Box)
As if there was any need to describe how wonderful these games are, Half-Life redefined the shooter genre in 1998, and again delivers in 2004.

2. Gunstar Heroes (Sega Genesis)
Severely neglected masterpiece of side-scrolling genius. This game is the original Contra, add Super Contra, throw in a mixture of Gradius and then multiply by 10,000. The action never lets up, it's a colorful and technological marvel for the Genesis, and the game has a surprising depth of gameplay (selecting different shooting modes, and combining two different weapon types).

3. Metal Gear Solid/Twin Snakes (Playstation, Gamecube)
Tactical espionage action that spawned a parade of "me, too" clones that could never deliver like this. It's clear that Hideo Kojima originally wanted to do movies, because MGS is a cinematic gaming experience not to be missed. There isn't even room to go into why this one was great. Only saying MGS1, because Snake is the only true hero and the other Solids get caught up in their own complexity. Twin Snakes has the director of the Japanese action flick Versus redoing the cutscenes, too, so check those out. They're on the net.

4. Soul Calibur (Arcade, Dreamcast)
Man, I used to skip school to play this game, all day, every day. I once poured $40 into the machine in two days, true story. I practiced so much I had to pay people to challenge me 'cause they wouldn't waste their own money. Beautiful graphics (on the Dreamcast), incredible depth, rhythmic combo system. Soul Calibur 2 lacked any sort of magic the original Calibur had, that's why this isn't listed as "Soul Calibur series." Plus, the original Soul Edge was just "OK."

5. Final Fantasy 7 (Playstation)
The game that really brought RPGs into the mainstream. Gorgeous prerendered environments, an engaging--if not confusing--storyline, the battle and materia system, the CG cutscenes, the music...everything about this game was super-high production level. All FFs after it have paled in comparison, and the only other FF that could possibly hold a candle to it is FF6 (which I have heard is actually better, but since I only played the game until maybe 10%, I can't comment).

6. Street Fighter 2 (Arcade, damn near every system)
The quintessential fighting game from which all others spawned. I don't think it'd be an exaggeration to say that this game and its clones were the sole reason arcades survived. Street Fighter 2 made fighting games. Matter of fact after this post I think I'll go play some Capcom vs. SNK 2...

7. Kingdom Hearts series (Playstation 2, GBA)
Square's other genius, the action RPG Kingdom Hearts. From a company oversaturated with Final Fantasy sequels and spinoffs, a real breath of fresh air. Fun battle system, colorful graphics, engaging storyline, and some real emotional content. Also, damn good music to rival the FF series.

8. Grim Fandango (PC)
"Run you pigeons, it's Robert Frost!" A hilarious adventure game where you play as Manny Calavera, a grim reaper who sells vacation packages through the Land of the Dead. Play this if you haven't yet, it's probably like $9 in the bargain bin. Made by the same people who made Monkey Island and Full Throttle, so you know it's good.

9. Dance Dance Revolution (Arcades, PS2/X-Box/Gamecube[?])
You dance and make a general ass out of yourself in front of a bunch of racous people at the arcade. Good times. If you're good enough, cute women ask for your autograph (again, true story...although it wasn't me, but a friend of mine; I just get onlookers and sometimes applause or laughs during funny dance routines). Also very good exercise.

10. Astral (Sega Saturn)
Couldn't think of anything else and I didn't want to echo anyone by saying Goldeneye or Diablo or Zelda/Mario series, so again I'm going with another obscure and yet beautiful platformer that none of you have probably ever even heard of. But make no mistake about it being last place, or my choice to put it here because I didn't want to echo anyone: ASTRAL WAS FRIGGIN' AMAZING. God. It was like...there's nothing to compare it to. It was incredible. Your retinas will be in euphoria. I think I've overused the words "gorgeous, beautiful, and cartoony," throughout this post (that seems to be the general theme behind my favorite games, doesn't it?), but this one takes the cake more than any of them. Yes, even more than Gunstar Heroes, because this game is not about super-fast action or explosive visuals. It's subtle, with smooth animation and cutscenes that'll have you playing them over and over again just to watch it one more time. Now I miss Astral. And my Saturn. RIP Saturn; I still love you. ;(

I'm also going to give an honorable mention to Gex, who deserved to be on this list but couldn't find a spot. Not that he'd care, because he's too busy chilling out in front of the tube on his barcalounger.

Brink's, good call on Vectorman. You know they're making a sequel to that, I heard?

Oh man, stealth edit: I completely forgot about Rockman (Megaman)! Argh! What is wrong with me?! Just slip in Rockman, namely Rockman 2 and Rockman X, somewhere up at the top there. Fight, Megaman! FIGHT FOR EVERLASTING PEACE!

No particular order...

Deus ex - just truly immersive
Halflife 1/2 - stunning in many respects
Operation Flashpoint - created an atmosphere that i havent experienced elswhere
Final fantasy 7/8 - the story, the music, the characters etc etc.. beautiful
Halo1 - superbly balanced, combat at its finest, some great music here too. let down by the sequel, which is still enjoyable though
Mafia - anyone got some links for info on the second? if it is in dev., this is one of my favourite games, near the tippity top of my list :) like being part of the godfather or something. i must get this back from my mate

Tomb raider 2 - nice tits... and venice was cool, one of my first games too :D
Command and conquer, particularly generals - as you can see from my list i dont play strategy much but this one appealed to me.
NOLF 1 and 2 - brilliant games, no the ai wasnt up to much in the first, but the sense of humor and style was there.
MGS - very innovative, clever, and fun
Max payne 1/2 - particularly 2. The action might have been a little too relentless, but it really shines and lives up to the "film de noir" stamped on the front. An emotional ride.

most probably left some out, but heres the most of them.

1. Half-Life2 \ Fallout2 dont know they are both very good.
2. Max Payne series
3. Mafia
4. FF8
5. DeusEx InvisibleWar
6. Half-Life
7. KOTOR
8. Fallout Tactics
9. FarCry (Many will not agree on this but, i loved it and i think its a damn good game.

no order: hl2, sonic 2, pes4, gt3, street fighter 2, san andreas, goldeneye, mgs, nolf

JRPG's are not to be confused with "traditional" RPGs.

I forgot about Grim Fandango. It's the best adventure game I've played, by far.

1) Metal Gear Solid 2 (MGS3 isnt out in Australia yet)
2) Metal Gear Solid
3) Half-Life 2
4) Mario Kart 64
5) GTA: San Andreas
6) Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne
7) Street Fighter 2
8) Galaga
9) Starcraft

1. Loom

My personal favs..

Aha, I remember Loom, if you're talking about the old macs, where you have to get notes throughout the game?

1) Half-Life 1 & 2 - Half-Life brought me into computer gaming. Half-Life 2 just took me even further.
3) Perfect Dark - My friends and I would play this forever.
4) Golden Eye - Awesome game for N64.
5) GTA Series (even 1 and 2) - These had/ve to be one of the coolest games. So much freedom.
6) Warcraft III - I love the multiplayer mod-maps. Mainly, TD.
7) Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time - Oh my god, such an awesome game. I love playing it to this day.
8) NFL Blitz 2000 (playstation) - My friend and I would play countless games just beating the hell out of the computer.
9) Windows Solitaire - School. Boredom. Solitaire.
10) Mario 64 - The first "3D" game I ever played. I got it when the N64 was brand new, and it was a sight to behold.

That's my top 10.

Honorable Mentions are Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64, Banjo-Kazooie, and BF1942.

Half Life 2(dude i havnt buy this game yet)
GTA San Andreas
Warcraft 3
Diablo 2
FF10
METAL GEAR SOLID SERIES
thats all :)

The List...

1. Half-Life / Half-Life 2

When I first played Half-Life, I felt like I was in a real world. It felt so huge, and encompassing. The surroundings, the music, all made the entire thing jump out at me as being surreal.

I was hooked -- and have been hooked ever since the first.

2. Medal of Honor Series

The first time I played Medal of Honor [PS], I was drooling. Shooting germans, in battle's I long romanced over. What age was I? ... 11, 12? ... 10? It was an old game, but I loved it -- and my Grandma's stereo TV would be blaring war every couple of weekends.

Since then, I've done competitve play -- thats just hilarious.

3. Halo / Halo 2

When I first played Halo, I sucked at using an XBox control stick to look around. Once I got adjusted to the environments and how to function properly in them, I rolled up into being challenged by MLG players. Go. Me.

The Storyline was good in singleplayer, but nothing in the series could out do itself in Multiplayer.

4. Perfect Dark

The sounds in that game, were the best I've heard in a shooter. The Dragon Gun, the RPC150? Or 1000? With the zoom? Reminded me a lot of the MG42 view you get on SPR, during the invasion landing. I loved all the weapons in that game, and could use pretty much everything effectively.

I learned here, the key to a rugged defense -- and I loved slaming skulls back with a shotgun blast.

5. Unreal Tournament

I used to go play this at a club called the 5O. We'd hold LAN parties there, and just go mad psycho on custom maps with a full fledged bot/human vs human/bot war. Fun. As. Hell!

From here, I learned the art of the Ripper -- I could ping off heads with multiple saws, and I was feared because of it.

6. Soul Calibur

I liked the original Dreamcast version better, then I did, the sequel's for other systems.

Something about Voldo that bothers people -- that already gives me an edge.

7. Star Wars Battlefront

Get a tournament going for this, and its a blast! Get up to 16 people playing with an extra 32 bots, and its a laughing fast!

Oh, the carnage. I dont play it much now, but I will when Half-Life or Halo's not around.

8. Silent Hill Series

I just like being scared. Shitless.

9. Grand Theft Auto Series

I liked GTA:2 better then some of these other games, but then again, San Andreas is okay.

10. Anything RTS Related

Codename Panzers, Soldiers Heroes of World War II, etc.

BONUS

Best, all-out wargame, no matter what?

OPERATION FLASHPOINT

I do massive-multiplayer games, but I wont list those here. :D

starcraft, OOT, Half-Life, and Gran Turismo 3 are all some of my favorite games of all time.

I've decided to give this a shot.

1 - Half-Life 2
2 - Chrono Trigger
3 - Metroid Prime
4 - Half-Life
5 - Halo 2
6 - The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
7 - Metroid Fusion (GBA)
8 - Burnout 3: Takedown (XBOX)
9 - NFL 2K5 (XBOX)
10 - Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003 (GC)

Burnout 3 is just too much damn fun to play to not be on this list. The bottom two are my favourite sports game, and I love sports.

I have yet to play Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and Metroid: Zero Mission. And I hated Halo.

In no particular order..
1.) HL\HL2 - Brought me to the FPS scene, I'm still lovin it.
2.) Mario 64 - First 3D game, gave me tons of hours of entertainment.
3.) Starcraft - Played for like 4 years, insanely fun RTS.
4.) Diablo 1 - Gave me roughly 3 1/2 years of love, I think D2 kinda changed the directin to 100% online play, super crap story etc..'
5.) Goldeneye 64 - Insane amount of playtime on this game, the first FPS I ever played.
6.) Morrowind - Insanely addicting
7.) WC3\TFT - Hated the Ladder, loved the editor
8.) Turok 2 64 - I super loved this game for the 64, ohhhh sooo god damn fun!
9.) Quake 2 64 - Not as much playtime as goldeneye, but still very fun on there!
10.) Call Of Duty\UO - Nearly all scripted, best WW2 experince ever.

I really can't narrow down my top ten favorites in order so I'll just name a few games that I've become addicted to.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
StarCraft, StarCraft: Brood War
WarCraft II, WarCraft III, WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne
Perfect Dark
GoldenEye 007
Mario Kart 64
Pokemon
Half-Life, Half-Life 2
Counter-Strike
Dance Dance Revolution :)

no order..

Starcraft
Warcraft - Dota
Counter strike (never played HL to be honest)
Mario Kart - Go Bowser
GTA- All of them
Need for Speed
PoKemon... hehehe im sure everyone played this one
Street fighter vs X-men
Double Dragon
Heros of Might and Magic
Fifa series

I guess mario series was ok even though you could finish number one in under 10 minutes..

1) Chrono trigger (Super NES, 1995)
2) HL1
3) Mafia
4) Goldeneye
5) Far Cry
EDIT: Ship pwnz because he has chrono trigger in his list!
