OK, so I have 56k at home where HL2 is installed and I want the SDK (220MB it seems), however I have unlimited bandwidth at work, a 256MB pen drive, and Steam installed there too. But - at work Steam takes forever to launch, and every time I try it seems to be down. At home, it'll take an age to d/l.

* is there an alternate download location for Source SDK?
* does Steam support d/l resume (so I can d/l it at home)?
* did Valve give even a moment's thought to technologically backward people like me on 56k?

So, in a word, unless I get broadband at home, I can forget about mapping for HL2, yes?

I dont think theres any other way unless you download the files on your 56k im afraid...you could try emailing valve with your problem, see what they have to say

No, there is no alternate d/l location for Source SDK.
Yes, Steam supports download resuming. (unlike MrMan said)
Yes, that's why the game package says HL2 requires certain stuff and the game works with very old computers too.

You could transfer the actual Source SDK cache file but 256MB memory stick isn't enough since at the moment the cache weighs at about 316 megabytes.

I have every update for HL2, CSS, HLS, HL2DM, STEAM, and the SDK, and this was all done on 56k.

Yes, it takes awhile, but Steam (for me at least) transfers data pretty fast.

Yes it downloads pretty fast, I used to download ISOs (650 MB) with my 56k so I don`t see why you couldn`t download 220 MB. The only thing I find bad is that sometimes after an update some things in the SDK stop working correctly and they tell us: Hey that's no problem! Just delete what you downloaded and download it again! Hey Hey! First time I see something like that. I agree Steam is also the first soft of its kind but I just don't like the "Redownload" solution. Anyway, so you have no choices to download it with Steam. And if something goes wrong, you'll have to redownload it again... lol

OK, thanks. 56k it is then. Does anyone know why Valve didn't just include the SDK with the game, like everyone else? I mean, how hard can that be?

er maybe because they hadn't finished it completely for the public?

Since they must have used the SDK to make the game in the first place I wonder what was so unfinished about it. OK, maybe it was unstable and buggy, but that's par for the course with bundled map editors. (How Infinity Ward ever got Call of Duty finished using that CoDRadiant POS I don't know...)

Silly person, haven't you thought of making a steam backup off your work computer? You can include the SDK in it.

Stream doesn't want to work on my work PC, so that's not an option. I got it on 56k in the end, and it didn't seem to be as large as 220MB.
