Alyx is Combine agent in my version (turret hell)

I'm at the Entanglement stage, the first time you set two turrets in a control room. After Alyx says she can reprogram the turrets and the PA annouces they have been compromised, I set them up. Only problem, they NEVER fire at the Combine but they sure as hell fire at me. I've tried setting them up in many different locations (also tried carrying one with the gravgun) but no luck. I've even tried darting in front of them when the Combine arrive to get them to go active but again, no luck. Oh, they go active and will shoot at me but drop into sleep mode even when a Combine trooper is right in front of it? I must have the version of the game when Alyx has a cruel sense of humor or is a sleeper Combine agent :O Has this happened to anyone else? I'm sure I can beat this level without the turrets but I WANT TO SEE THEM TO THEIR DIRTY WORK. Help.

err did u buy the game in a store? if u did then how bout restarting the chapter, that might fix it. also, validate ur steam files

Yes, I have a standard retail version of the game. Plain vanilla at the normal level setting.

Try entering "restart" in the console, and play again. You can't beat the chapter without turrets. You can do this part, but there's another ahead that is insanely difficult. Well, you may be able to beat it without turrets, but then you have to real good, and even then it will be hard.

Thanks for the suggestion Solver, I'll give that a try. Searching the forum, 99% of the posts concern the turrets in the upcoming (challenging) section; however, I did find a few other folks who had the same problem I described, although no one found a fix.

Yes, they're "on" in the sense that they will track, shoot, and kill, only they track, shoot, and kill Gordon, not the enemy.

I had that problem with the turrets, I remember shooting them though and then they started attacking the combine, mighta just gotten caught in the crossfire though.

Thanks .Jezus. Yes, I suppose I could use a cheat code but call me old fashioned, I like to play games straight. Using cheat codes spoils the mood and devalues any sense of accomplishment in making progress.

My advice is: Try to beat the part you are at now without help from the turrets. When you come to the HARD part a little later, if the turrets don't work correct then either, cheat.
Sure beats restarting the level and (perhaps) meet the bug again.

No mods installed. Very plain install running on a typical box, AMD 64, Asus A8V, Radeon 9800XT, XPSP2.

Thanks to all for your advice.

I had no problems the first time i played through, but on my second or third run through the game the same thing happened to me. I just played through with out them. i was playing on hard and i did it so its definatly possible on normal. While the turrets are cool, the level can be more fun without them (if you like challenges) because with them all you end up doing is setting up the turrets, hiding, and waiting for like 10 min till the combine stop comming.

Or, you could restart the level and cheat to get back to where you were. notarget or noclip could get you back to the turret section in no time.

For the second time setting them up, I set them up properly, but still ran around gunning some Combine myself instead of sitting and hoping the turrets will do all the job ;). It was very fun.

It was most fun the first time, me not realizing they could be picked up after being knocked over (I know I'm an idiot), the first wave of combine knocking them off, and me fighting the rest by myself... took me a huge amount of retries.
